| Everett | You ready? It's these two. Hello, |
| Andrew | fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify, you're listening to Forty and Twenty, the WatchClicker podcast with your hosts Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? |
| Everett | Andrew, I'm well. Thank you for asking. I uh had uh opportunity to hang out with uh uh old friend today, which was good, an old friend of ours, uh an, army friend of ours from back in the day that we see. Pre-Army. Somewhat yeah, pre pre well |
| Andrew | I I have not seen him since we commissioned. |
| Everett | Oh, no kidding. Well, I've seen him a couple times, but uh that was fun you know I see them every couple of years and uh it was good so um yeah other than that just enjoying the season fall I'm pulling out my chorecoats you know it's chorecoat weather |
| Andrew | I hope I didn't become a thing on our |
| Everett | show. Charcucci |
| Andrew | and chorecoats. yeah, |
| Everett | yeah, yeah. Andrew, how are you? Andrew, |
| Andrew | where are you? Is it important where I |
| Unknown | am? I |
| Everett | don't think it's a 'cause I'm in a hotel. |
| Andrew | So I'm I'm fully enjoying this sabbatical that I'm taking by taking the occasional like well I went to Europe for two weeks um and that didn't feel like enough so I was like I'm gonna go to Hawaii um so I uh found a cheap flight and the cheapest room in the cheapest and nice hotel that I could find in Hawaii and um here for a few days. Today's actually my last night. I have to fly home in the morning, uh which I think I'm okay with as great as it's been. Um 85 degrees and like piercing, like soul penetrating sun, uh is not for people like me. And when I say that, I mean people who like have an actual sun allergy and that when they're hot for too long they break out in a rash. I don't mean a sunburn, I mean a rash. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh no, I yeah, I get that. I get that. I mean I don't actually get that, but I'm |
| Andrew | you've seen them with the heat rash. Like you've been I went to Mexico with you. You saw the entirety of my torso just like looked like a chicken pot kid. Uh |
| Everett | indeed. So I I have been |
| Andrew | able to avoid that because I'm my my hotel is just a couple blocks off of the beach. So as I I like I just alternate like AC I I'm kind of doing like the sauna thing, like like sauna ice bath, sauna ice bath, but with like sun exposure air conditioning, outdoors air conditioning. |
| Everett | It's exactly the same. It's therapeutic treatment, basically. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Actually, my knees don't hurt here as much, which is I don't know. Maybe it's the LS. Inflammation |
| Everett | feels really low. Yeah. |
| Andrew | My back hurts the same, but uh yeah, I went diving with sharks today, so we got some foster shots. I I had to bring a disposable underwater camera, so there might be some halfway decent uh fosters w shots with a shark. Uh |
| Everett | yeah, hard to tell with a disposable camera. It's film, I assume. |
| Andrew | Yeah, it's film. So the w and the other challenge was I I've never I've never tried to use an underwater camera in saltwater before. |
| Everett | Oh yeah. So I was just fighting |
| Andrew | buoyancy the whole time in a way that I was just like really unfamiliar with. I was fighting my own buoyancy, the buoyancy of the camera. I had to wear the watch on the other wrist because it's a right hand only manipulation of the mechanics of the camera. So |
| Everett | like sure everything it was it was a mess. |
| Andrew | So if if we get one, we get one. Um my guess is it's just gonna be a disaster. Um but I was in the water with a bunch of sharks today and that was neat. Um |
| Everett | that's cool. Yeah. Ye.ah And I didn't know. Yes. Yeah. Cool. I like Honolulu. I think it's uh that's a fun place to be. |
| Andrew | I I've been to Hawaii before, but I was on the big island. Uh and it's uh it's pretty shocking how different the the islands are, with Honolulu being like holding the state capital and being the metropolitan center of the islands and Hawaii, the big island being like Agland for the most part. Um it's not as now he's |
| Everett | different uh environmentally diverse |
| Andrew | either. Uh like the big island, the north half of the island is like s Kansas. That is not like that here. |
| Everett | right. It's just it's just like mountainous |
| Andrew | jungles. chickens, and |
| Everett | jungle. So many chickens and |
| Andrew | pigeons. And they don't care if the pigeons come inside the restaurants either. They just like accept that as a reality of their urban living environment. I took some pictures and sent it to my oldest kid and I was like, dude, this pigeon is sitting next to me at the I'm indoors. I'm in s there's a there's a a windscreen and there's pigeons inside. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh definitely a cool |
| Andrew | experience. Glad I did it. Very hot. Uh ready to come back home to to fall. |
| Everett | Yeah. Well I'll uh we'll welcome you with open arms. Uh Andrew, in any event we're not here to talk about Hawaii or old friends, rather. We're here to talk about watches, which sometimes can be old friends. But the ones we're gonna talk about today aren't old friends. These are these are our watches that have been released recently, most of them I think. I was wondering if there's anything if there's anything that caught your eye as you were making your way through the the most recent watch releases, Andrew. |
| Andrew | Yes, and I have to find it. Since we're talking about old friends, uh I think this is a very suitable. I don't have a mouse. I'm used to working on my computer with a mouse. Um and frankly a second monitor. I'm I'm just kinda I'm not I'm not prepared today. Um never prepared to be fair. |
| Everett | Yeah, I mean being prepared is not I I don't want to say it's overrated, but I think that's a good word for it. |
| Andrew | I think it's I think it's really rated. And I think the reason that most successful people uh are frequently prepared is because it it actually is pretty valuable. It's just really cool that you and I have found a way to succeed in life as just so marginally uh I don't think even marginally prepared really appropriately describes us because I I I just I think it might be lower. Now talking about old friends. There is a special release from Hanhart this week that I think is is something that like well duh and how did we not have this before? So there is finally a Steve McQueen edition of the Hanhart 417 ES, which is a watch that Steve McQueen was famously photographed wearing for decades, and how this has not uh happened until now is uh I don't know a bit of a head scratcher. Um so here's the bummer. It's on a cuff strap or a bund, as as people like to call it, because that's how Steve liked to war hit wear his. they're making 300 of these. The biggest difference is hang on, let's find this here. Um 39mm case, just like the original bidirectional coin edge bezel, red pusher. Uh I mean I's all the the for the Hanhart stuff. It's all the good stuff. Um the limited edition number one and it's it ties in so nicely to the history of Hanhart that I think it's kind of a brand that like it has this really rich history that struggles to translate that forward into their into their modern watches because so many watch brands are vintage inspired. |
| Everett | Yeah. Whereas Handhart has just kept doing |
| Andrew | the same thing that they've been doing. Um in in a landscape. |
| Everett | Seeming seemingly a a a a void there. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Um so anyway, this is a a really cool special edition for uh the King of Cool, who has worn this watch, or wore this watch. Uh 2890 euros, 100 meters of water resistance, flyback chronograph. Like it's just it's all the things. |
| Everett | Yeah, you know what I love about the Steve McQueen connection here is this is not like a watch that he was pictured wearing during one event or that he wore the mono movie. This is a watch that he kind of unceremoniously wore for years, for decades, right? This was just like his watch that he liked and enjoyed. Like this was actually something that he was |
| Andrew | selling point. I know. It's really it's |
| Everett | pretty cool. It's pretty cool. And it is a cool watch. and uh, you know, Andrew, I am gonna say something wild here. |
| Andrew | Who's gonna think I hate |
| Everett | a bun strap in this context? I kinda like it. I don't know that I could ever wear I I just don't know. But I'm looking at these I'm looking at the pictures, even like the new pictures, like this model's got uh who who who who who what did you send us? You sent us Fratello. So this is this is Bala's frenzy? I don't know I don't know uh this writer. Um, but uh like he's got like sort of a like obviously like a beaded bracelet that his kid made him and uh or a friendship bracelet. And i like it just like yeah that looks cool. It looks cool. |
| Andrew | Uh a leather jacket and some and some vintage denim on a vintage motorcycle. I don't know anybody |
| Everett | I know a guy. I don't I don't know anybody |
| Andrew | who that who like who fits that mold exactly but um |
| Everett | yeah, I don't think it's gonna be another thing. So I'll just say uh I got a vintage shot motorcycle jacket this week and I felt so ridiculous doing it, and then I got it and I was like, man, I just love this thing. I still don't know when I'll wear it. Uh it is like, you know, shot's got their |
| Andrew | when will you not wear it? That |
| Everett | would that would be fun. Anyway, shot's got their sort of like motorcycle line and then they've got their like more sort of streamlined like no footballs and uh you know this is like a motor s it's like a real motorcycle jacket with footballs and you know you know back vents and gosh I love it. I put it on it's old too, right? This thing, I think, is probably like a 1990s and it's been worn. So it's kind of it's been worn gently. It's not like it's beat to shit, but man, I got it. I was like I try I sat on Facebook Marketplace and I went over to the guy's house and I tried it on and it was like this thing was made for me. Uh yeah. So I I'm the owner of a motorcycle jacket now. |
| Andrew | And a motorcycle. And a |
| Everett | motorcycle, yes. And a motorcycle. Yeah. In fact I I think tomorrow I've got to clean the carburetors. Maybe Sunday. We'll see. |
| Andrew | It sort of seems like you might be perhaps who I was talking about who should buy this watch and wear it on a bun strap. |
| Everett | Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Yeah. I'll look into it. I'll look into it. Um well it's a cool release. Do you have anything else you want to say about it? |
| Andrew | No, I mean I I I love Han Hart. I I've've been drooling over the four seventeen and the uh oh shoot, what's the other one? Um there's another four seventeen that I really like. Um but a couple iterations of it that I'm just like, man, this this needs to be a thing. |
| Everett | Yeah, I mean I'm a huge fan of the preventer. Obviously that's not a that that's not sort of a classic. You know, I it's either the newest or one of the newest models in Han Art's line, but I just think that is such a |
| Andrew | nineteen sixty four watch. The |
| Everett | four seventeen? No. No. Oh yeah. Yeah, no, the Preventer, I think, came out what, twenty twenty-three recent. Yeah, |
| Andrew | the last five years. I just think that's |
| Everett | such okay. Uh I am going to talk about a watch that looks like it could be old, uh, but is not. Um, this is a uh uh man. I'm gonna struggle with this because I kind of hate and also kind of love the name. This is a watch from True North in a collaboration with Eric Wind. And they're calling this, they're calling this the Wind Tona. Wind Tona. I think formally they're calling it the Wintona. Uh which I suspect is uh what w what does portmanteau mean? Is that is that what this is? Uh portmanteau of Eric Wynne's last name and Daytona. Uh look. That is that is all fine and dandy. However, this watch is so much more than this. So what this is, is a sort of I I don't think it's a stretch to say a Daytona styled chronograph, tricompacts. Um it because the story here's the colors. This is a watch that Eric designed with uh True North Watch Company, and it's a watch that he's talked about having, you know, where you know, oftentimes when he picks colors, he sort of goes with his goes with his gut and then helps you know lets his kids kind of affect the decision. His kids loving these pastels. So this is a orange dial with purple, yellow, and blue, all pastel, purple, yellow, and blue subdials, and a sort of minty green bezel. You're at home, and if you haven't seen this, you're thinking, what in the fuck are you talking about? That sounds awful. It is not. It is not. |
| Andrew | It works. It is so freaking |
| Everett | good. It's so good. It has a, I would say a tasteful uh true north watch company text at 12 o'clock. It has got a true north logo, which I don't love. I don't love, especially in this execution. I think it's maybe too big or I I don't know. But everything else I love. Right above the six o'clock subdial we've got wind vintage. These fonts are all um evocative. We'll say that. Um great tach meter around that bezel golly andrew i think this thing is great so what is this a blue |
| Andrew | r coating on the inside that's giving it that blue hue on the crystal? |
| Everett | I do believe that's what we're seeing. Yes. I do believe that's what we're seeing. So we've got a 37mm 316L stainless case with a 316 stainless bracelet that is very nice. It's kind of got a stamped clasp, which gives it like maybe a bit of a old school vibe, which I think is perfect for this watch. Um really sort of unadorned polished case back with um I guess sort of a Rolex style uh gripping mechanism. And it's kind of B case |
| Andrew | coin edge uh on on the case back. |
| Everett | Yes. yeah. VK63 mecha quartz movement, which means that this thing is uh well so limited to one thousand nine hundred and eighty-six pieces. Um which is reference to Eric's birth year. He's turning 40 this year. Um and and it's 490 bucks, Andrew. |
| Andrew | Ooh. See, there it is. There's |
| Everett | the winner. Because a watch like this, |
| Andrew | so thoughtfully designed, even with a VK, at a thousand bucks, I don't think anyone bats an eye. At an affordable price point with that many in production. Golly, that's just that's perfect. |
| Everett | Yeah, that that's right. I mean, I I I I think I think that's exactly right. They're not trying to pull the wool over anybody's eyes. They're like, we're gonna make a really accessible, really buyable watch. Um they're calling it the Dreamsickle colorway. Um and I think they've done this three times in the past, although those haven't caught my those haven't caught my attention. This does say it's sold out. |
| Andrew | Well that's too bad I didn't. yeah. |
| Everett | Sorry guys. Um in any event, what a cool watch. Maybe try to get one on the second hand if there's secondary market. |
| Andrew | I bet these will come up on the secondary market pretty um there's I mean there's almost two thousand of them. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah, you'll st you'll be able to find one. I really love it. And I and I love the fact that they did it this way. You know, Eric is a guy that handles probably a hundred uh, you know, or hundreds of thousands of watches daily, like literally, probably Just lovely, interesting, cool watch with True North, which is also a great company. This is this is a fun, fun release. |
| Andrew | Well, I think cool of of his design um methodology is it's so it's informed by um the absolute best in the industry. Right. Th there's there's probably few people who have interacted with m more watches, if any uh if anybody has interacted with more watches and actually like had them in person, handled them, uh and been able to truly appreciate the the the in the metal experience. And for this to be for for that to be his context that he's going and designing a watch like this, I think is uh I think is cool. |
| Everett | Yeah. |
| Everett | Agreed. Agreed. Uh what's next? |
| Andrew | Hmm. Baltic. Uh so Baltic was recently released recently become the official timekeeper for the Icelandic gravel cycling race, the Rift. In honor of being the authentic timekeeper for the Rift, they have released an ermetic in a 34mm and a 37mm format, with I think my favorite application of forged carbon in a dial. So what this is is the Baltic Remit with |
| Everett | a kind of teal and minty |
| Andrew | green uh color palette on the dial, with the outer circle being forged carbon carbon and the inner dial being a full loomed dial. And I think this is just fantastic. It's really good. I don't know anything about the Icelandic gravel race, the rift. I don't know anything about gravel racing. My assumption is that it's akin to what we did as kids riding around in the undeveloped areas around our neighborhood, just riding bicycles down gravel hills and hoping we didn't fall. Um |
| Everett | it could be more than that. It's |
| Everett | exactly the same thing. Yeah. Uh 90 |
| Andrew | 39 movement comes in a 34 and a 37. They're not making many of these. They're making I gotta pull that up, um 400 in each size, uh 620 euros. So what's I don't know, 700 ish bucks um on the strap. I think this is great. This is a cool limited release. Uh the color palette is fantastic for it. Um, it looks like an adventure watch and the hermetic never really feels like an adventure watch to me, but in this color palette I can get with |
| Everett | it. I think the real story here is the release of the thirty four millimeter Hermatique, which I uh just have to assume is going to find itself into yeah yeah um into the rest of the catalog. Uh dimensions dimensions on that are terrific. You know same thickness um same thickness. So both of these measure 10.8 thick with the crystal or 8.3 without it, which is to say these are very, very thin watches. 42 and a half millimeter lug to lug on the 34, which this is going to be a very, very dainty watch, which is really uh on trend right now. I think I think I'd like to see one of these in |
| Andrew | person 'cause I think that lug lo that lug length on it is gonna stretch it just a little bit. It does, yeah, I'm sure. Enough to be like I could I could wear that. I think that would like it would almost play in the in a dress watch like a uh uh fatty with t with D's and not T's dress watch feel. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah. that's right. I I think I think that's exactly right. I mean this is such a dread you know just so the ermatique is interesting because the they go with a full brushed case on these, but then with a really blingy polished bezel. And so it really sort of skirts. And then they come on these rubber tropic straps. They kind of skirt the, you know, uh like 60, 70 years ago. This is absolutely a sport watch, like uh undeniably sporty watch in 2026. Uh, given the context of G Shock and uh you know, Sunto and etcetera. Like this is a dress watch, |
| Andrew | right? For many people all went to hell when Obama wore a Casio in the White House. Nobody knows how to dress anymore. Senators wearing sneakers into the Oval Office. What's this one? This winds up |
| Everett | this winds up being for many owners probably the dressiest watch they own. Uh and so to suggest that just because of size |
| Andrew | or because of the polish of the bezel? Like I think I think maybe it's worth us re evaluating what we would what we consider dressy. And for me, what causes this to be dressy is the high polish on the bezel and the diminutive size.. Yep Limited on the dial, right? But it's still full loom dial, but still I |
| Everett | know. They're calling it a |
| Andrew | glacial blue and moss green. So the glacial blue is the 12, 3, 6, 9 markers, the the actual indices, and then the the moss green are the other hour loom plots. Um I think that's No, I |
| Everett | Andrew, I th I think it's I think it's less about the I mean I think you're right. I I think the size, the dimension of the crown, the crown is sort of hugs the case and sits in uh really classic |
| Andrew | like a like an S N K really classic |
| Everett | styling you, you're right, that polished bezel. But I also think there's a relativity uh to the to the question, right? Like most people wear a handful of watches, right? And so uh or or or just one, right? But you know, you might have |
| Andrew | if you Yeah, that's |
| Everett | right. So you might have a you know uh Orient Make over an SKX and then you've got a G-Shock, and then you've got a you know, maybe like uh a sporty chronograph or something, and and then you've got this, and like let's just line them up next to each other, which is the dressy one. I I know which one it is. You know which one it is. So I think there's I think the just the trends of watches have taken us to this place. You know, people will say, uh like, oh, I want I want a nice dress watch, and then they'll go out and buy like a 42 millimeter you know citizen sport watch and they're like, Yeah, this is my dress watch. It's got |
| Andrew | it's got a metal bracelet, it's dressy. |
| Everett | That's right. And it's like, okay, we're talking different languages. So it in that context, in that context, you you know, and and and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, right? Like I think if you're you know, for most people, what does dressing up look like? Like I put on I put on a shirt with buttons and this watch looks great with this outfit. Fuck yeah, it does. That is a dress watch. You're right. you nailed it. In that context though, this thirty four millimeter hermetik is like we've really stepped it up in in the in the formality here, you know. I can |
| Andrew | imagine a time when when when everyone wore a three piece suit and a hat. Man Man, that would have been just marvelous. |
| Everett | Yeah, I mean, you know, I I can't remember what the context was, but I saw a photograph of the other day and it was a candid photograph. It was a candid photograph of a fellow in the probably early 50s in his front lawn with a push like a rail mower, and he had a dog at his feet, like probably a Scotty dog or something. And the dude was |
| Andrew | Scotty Dogs then. The dude was wearing |
| Everett | like a dress shirt, like a maybe as a button down, a quote unquote sports shirt, but it was a a b a shirt with a collar and was wearing sort of high waisted pleated trousers and was wearing um uh like uh loafers, like penny loafers or maybe Venetian loafers, and was mowing his lawn like that was the outfit that he had gone and I'm thinking, oh my god, the grass stains, you know. But uh yeah, you know, like it was a different it's a different world, right? Like he that was like he's like, Oh, I'm gonna go out in the yard and work and I'm gonna put on my work stuff. Like Or |
| Andrew | this is what I wore to work and I'm just gonna go mow the lawn. |
| Everett | Yeah, perhaps. Perhaps. But I just thought, you know, it's like we yeah, people dress differently uh seventy years ago than they do today. |
| Andrew | I got an overcoat uh recently because I was at Macy's because I got I'm gotten a little fat and needed to buy some new suit pants. Every like all the suiting stuff was fifty percent off and I was like, well, I wanted to get one of these but I've never really been able to justify the price, but at 50% off, I can get that. I'm excited for it to get cold. |
| Everett | I love that. I love that. What's the next oh I have the next one it's your turn? |
| Andrew | you have the next thing. So I'm actually Okay, |
| Everett | gnomos. Glashuta. German brand gnomos has had a I think a sleeper watch in their collection for many years and the reason I call it a sleeper watch is because it doesn't get all of the fanfare of the tangente or perhaps the club campus, certainly the neomatic world timer. |
| Andrew | Does gnomos get any of it though? I think this is something that we talk about all the time, is that gnomos is just a sleeper brand. If you know, you know, and if you see a gnomos in the wild, that person knows. |
| Everett | Yes. no, very very true. Ver very true. and actually I'll I'll take an aside here because it's it's I I had a a recent real real life interaction where that became true. Uh so I'm talking to a fellow, we're I'm getting beers with a fella, uh a good friend of mine, known him for a long time. This guy has owned a marathon SAR. He's owned, I think, two. Oh my gosh, that's so weird when the camera follows your head. He's owned It's like I'm watching a sitcom. He's owned like two or three two or three Grand Seiko's. He's owned um a uh uh tutor pelligos, like the OG Pelagos. He's presently rocking uh rocking a no-date sub. Uh the guy knows watches, right? He's not like he he's not out of the and he said, you know, I've been really, I've been thinking about getting a dress watch, but not like a dress watch, but something that I can wear that is gonna be thinner. And but I'm like struggling to find something that feels that feels right, that feels cool. And I was like, well, what about gnomos? And he was like, what? And I was like, gnomos, the German brand, they're in-house, they're super affordable. Uh you know, and he's like, but I've never heard of this company. And I'm like, Thomas, you've got to check out Nomos. And uh he's like, Okay, well, I will. So he texts me like three days later, and he's like, Oh, yeah, these are awesome, and now I'm gonna buy I think two no that's that's fantastic. Uh |
| Andrew | so anyway because it once you s once it it just it clicks, right? Yeah. Early in my watch listing, Gnomos was was on the radar, but it wasn't ever something that really scratched the itch. Uh it gnomos hasn't gotten more cool. I've my palette has just developed. |
| Everett | Yes. Yeah, no. No, that that's a hundred percent right. And this guy's sort of an if you know, you know a guy, right? I think the first time I met him, uh he had set his wallet down. I met him at a bar. Uh he had set his wallet down and it was like a uh I I could just tell it was awesome. It was like a shell cordovan, iron heart, like a well-worn, and I was like, this fucking guy. So he's that guy. Like a and and he started looking at to him. It was probably also made |
| Andrew | from like reclaimed okay corral like uh like saddle horns. Like |
| Everett | anyway. So uh all that to say it it despite their sleeper status, uh, Nomos has within their collection a watch that I think is even sort of a little bit more sleeper than that, which is their Metro Date Power Reserve Watch. And this is a watch that has it's like a wirelug watch, which is an application that Tutor uses. Um very thin. What'd I say? |
| Andrew | You said tutor. Oh, that was |
| Everett | weird. Yeah. uh this is a design that gnomos uses. We've got a pretty plain dial. Gnomos at nine o'clock. We do have sub-seconds, and then we have a power reserve in this watch, which makes sense given the name of the watch. Um uh it and of course a six o'clock date. Of course, a six a date at six o'clock. So kind of a sleeper watch, really well put together, follows the Bauhaus design philosophy, except for maybe a power reserve is maybe antithetical to the Bauhaus design philosophy. Anyway, uh I I don't know. I don't know maybe maybe there's an argument to be made. Um the problem with this watch has always been, Andrew, the problem with this watch has always been that the MetroDate power reserve has not had a quick set date. Which means that if you take your watch off for let's say two weeks and then you put it on, you will have to wind your watch 30 times 30 times around or set your watch 30 times around to get the date. It which is just annoying. For a date, or for a watch that is really like, here's a date. This is an in-house movement. It's a date complication. You know, if you're not wearing this watch every day, like what a pain in the ass. They fixed it. The new gnomos metro date power reserve has a quick set, and they haven't changed anything else. The dimensions are still exactly what you would expect from gnomos, which is to say perfect. Um it is it is a a small watch 37 millimeters uh and eight millimeters of case height. |
| Andrew | One with the crystal. Yep. |
| Everett | They've also bumped the power reserve from forty-two to fifty-two hours. We've still still a hand wine movement. Um, but yeah, like we uh so that now we've got the DUW 4401. It is 32.1 millimeters in diameter, two point eight millimeters thick, brand new to normal's design. I think that they're not gonna change the model references for this. I think they're just gonna roll with it, which is kind of fun. That's fun. Um, but |
| Andrew | yeah, why change it? |
| Everett | 4,500 bucks for this. Watch. Forty five hund buredcks for this watch. In house movement, um power reserve, which uh we we poo-poo power reserves, but in a in a in a manual wind watch, power reserve makes a lot of sense. |
| Andrew | Makes a lot of sense. It made more sense when they didn't have quick set date and you knew you had to like quick and catch up. Like, oh god, no. Don't let me be one day behind the current date. Uh it's like doing the Vox dance. |
| Everett | Yeah. Oh my gosh. Although the Vox Doc Dance, you can do you can like pull it back and move forward. So you're not actually rotating it all the way around twice. You can it's like a anyway. It's like two |
| Andrew | thirty or or I think it's like two two thirty, two forty five that'll cycle the date. |
| Everett | yeah. I think you gotta go like to like eight forty five to two five to two eighty. |
| Everett | Yeah. Something like that. it's not a it's not a full |
| Andrew | twelve it's not even a full twelve hours, but it's just it's enough that it's like |
| Everett | Admittedly I have not worn my amphibia in probably two years. So I can't remember. And I probably didn't set the date the last time I wore it. |
| Andrew | I know you didn't rarely even wind your handers. |
| Everett | So anyway, a sleeper amongst sleepers and improved. So if you've ever looked at this watch and thought I really like that, but that is such a stupid problem to have um no longer. |
| Andrew | I I struggle with especially with a brand as calculated and precise as gnomos, I struggle to call this an improvement rather than a r uhtification. Right? They fixed an issue that they created and shouldn't like they shouldn't have taken it to market without that technology. Because they just don't do things like that. They don't have the the like a blaring gap. |
| Everett | You know, I don't have that I I mean maybe? Yeah, I don't know. it does seem to me like a weird it seems to me like a weird thing. |
| Andrew | They've remediated their mistake. Thank you, Gnomos, for doing the right thing and living up to the gnomos glassuta name that you've created. |
| Everett | Andrew, what's next? Ooh, |
| Andrew | I have a stupid watch that I kind of love. |
| Everett | They're all stupid. No, |
| Andrew | not all watches. are stupid I wore stupid and I love |
| Everett | them all into the ocean today with |
| Andrew | sharks. I had no legibility issues. Even where the loom was chipping off of the bezel. |
| Everett | It's not a loomed bezel. |
| Andrew | There's actually less paint on it now than there was this morning when I left. It got banged up a little bit. It does |
| Everett | seem to be a problem that company has a QC problem. |
| Andrew | Uh yeah, I'll take it up with the ownership. See if they answer my messages or if I have to go to the Reddit. Uh so my stupid watch. Uh a couple years ago, Seiko teased us with uh a panda watch. Uh and now we finally get it. And so this is a true panda panda. Uh this comes out of Seiko's power design project, uh where they uh partnered with creators, uh designers to design watches. And um this watch is playing on this uh on a Japanese concept of mitate. I I think M-I-T-A-T-E Mitate? Mitate? |
| Everett | Is that it |
| Andrew | could be a kuna matata, but there was no pandas in the Lion King, so I don't know if that's if that's it. Um so this design uh draws inspiration from this concept of matate that brings that that finds unexpected visual associations between seemingly unrelated objects. Um and the whole idea is that we've called uh white with black subdial watches, panda dials. I don't know, probably since before pandas were around. Um and so this watch is a play on that taking the two subdials and turning them into a panda face um with ears at the eleven and one o'clock but the eyes rather than being oval shaped with little nose and a mouth and fur texture on the dial. And these things are just cute as can be. I think I hate them. |
| Everett | As a button. Perhaps. |
| Andrew | But man, I just I love them. They're adorable. Uh 2,000 pieces of the pink dial. So there's a pink and a and a white available. Uh 3,000 of the white 540 US bucks they'll go on sale in November. Uh man, these really are just cute. And they're fun and I'm glad they exist. I hate them. I would never wear it. Um but I think I want one anywhere. I'd wear 'em. I'd wear one. Forty three millimeter case, fourteen six thick. Uh I think big, but they kind of have to be the they're getting powered by the um oh shoot uh movement on these the eight t sixty one they're fun. they're yeah. It's quartz. My favorite part. Um |
| Everett | my favorite part of these is Seiko says that this can actually calculate the speed of a s panda sprinting at full pace. |
| Andrew | Using the running seconds? |
| Everett | Using the sasameter. |
| Everett | Is that the is that the tachometer that's |
| Andrew | on there? Yes. |
| Everett | Yeah. It's a playful reference to sasa, the Japanese word for bamboo. Uh which I think everybody knows is one of panda's favorite foods. I think it's all they eat. Uh really, really okay. |
| Andrew | They just the one thing I |
| Everett | don't know. I don't think so. Um really cool dial on this. uh the sort of grained sunburst dials and the matte finishing. This is a beautiful watch. As sort of uh whimsical as it is, I think they've done a good job with this. They've made it a neat watch, despite the fact that it's totally stupid. The pushers are a little obnoxiously sized, but I think that's for to make this the proportions right. Um this is a fun watch and bullhead style, right? So they're not gonna get in the way of anything, but theoretically. Besides |
| Andrew | your shirt sleeve. Correct. |
| Everett | Correct. But hopefully, hopefully they lay low enough that that's not a real interruption. |
| Andrew | Are pandas fast? I thought it was like a thing that they're not fast. |
| Everett | No, so pandas are they go fast. They can run like twenty miles per hour. Uh so |
| Andrew | I've seen them falling down hills, and that's that's quick. |
| Everett | I think that what we think of when we think of pandas is almost exactly opposite of the way pandas actually are. They're like mean and nasty and ill-tempered and fast, right? like pandas look like a teddy bear, right? And all the depictions of them are are like, oh it's a panda. Oh no, they're fucking assholes. It's Chinese |
| Andrew | propaganda because all the pandas in the world are owned by the Chinese government and rented to their respective zoos. That's real. |
| Everett | That's awesome. they are all owned |
| Andrew | by the Chinese government. Um so yeah, the kind the cuteness of the of China of pandas is is Chinese propaganda. |
| Everett | Uh can we talk about a brand that we love to talk about? Uh Omega? |
| Andrew | Uh Omega? Do we have to? |
| Everett | Look. Actually, I want to I do want to talk about |
| Andrew | this one. I like it. Okay. |
| Everett | So Omega has um slowly sort of been |
| Everett | dropping hints and Easter eggs that there's |
| Everett | a new line of Bond watches coming, and now we've seen the first sort of foray into Omega's new bond generation. |
| Andrew | Why don't they just wait until the new bond is released? |
| Everett | Well I I don't know. Andrew and and it's not like |
| Andrew | the bond franchise is going stale, so the Omega partnership with it's also too can't be going stale. |
| Everett | I have due to recent comments made on this show and elsewhere, I have fallen out of the good graces with all my contacts at Omega. And so I'm no longer uh well let's just say I'm not right now getting the the the inside scoop on on Omega's decision making. I did not |
| Andrew | fraudulently sign the loyalty pledge um with that |
| Everett | With that said, what we have here is four watches, but really two regular catalog watches. Um we've got two unobtainium hundred thousand dollar watches that are made in platinum and we're not gonna talk about those at least not very much. Um but we also have two sort of main line watches both of these are coming these are look these are C Master Diver 300s. That's what they are that like if you want any sort |
| Everett | of interesting, |
| Everett | horologically or dimensionally interesting uh uh news here, it's not gonna happen, right? These are C Master Diver 300s, which is to say it's a forty-two millimeter watch that's about seventeen and a half millimeters thick, or maybe nineteen and a half. I can't remember. |
| Andrew | I think it's twenty-two. Uh oh, |
| Everett | yeah. Uh so what's different here is well well what is different here? We've got two two bezels. that's really what what's different here. |
| Andrew | There's two dials. don't display. |
| Everett | A blue wave dial, which is |
| Everett | which is b being sort of billed as I'm gonna call |
| Everett | it the good guy dial, a blue wave dial, and that comes with a titanium insert, and this is a relief titanium insert. Sort of like a yachtmaster or whatever. And then we've also got a matte black dial, which I'm going to call this the |
| Everett | bad guy version. |
| Everett | And that comes with a black matte ceramic |
| Everett | relief bezel insert. Um |
| Everett | yes, so we've got one of these is the bond, one of these is the specter, the the sort of fictional bad guy group spectre. Um and yeah, that's what it is, right? I I mean uh uh that's what these are, right? I don't know that everybody is in love |
| Everett | with these because there's kind of a boring |
| Everett | release. Uh with that said in a vacuum, I I think these are attractive. These are both attractive. I |
| Andrew | really like the Spectre. I don't um like one the biggest hang up for me on getting one of these has been the wave dial. I know there are non-wave versions, but the the the my stumbling block that I have not yet been over able to overcome is the wave dial uh this special edition matte black specter with the kind of sandy texture bezel insert. That does it for me. That's yeah, it's given I |
| Everett | mean uh I it's given kind of Speedmaster vibes. |
| Andrew | It kinda does. Yeah. It gets given kind of |
| Everett | species. Scratches the itch right in the middle of your back that |
| Andrew | that is just hard to reach. |
| Everett | Both of these are coming on mesh |
| Everett | bracelets. I assume these are stybe mesh bra mesh |
| Everett | bracelets. I don't know that, but I assume that's |
| Everett | what that's what Omega's been doing. Uh Omega's execution of the mesh bracelet, the stibe bracelet comes with a really, I think, cumbersome clasp. Um that sits, you know, the the the bracelets you get from stibe, the mesh bracelets you get from Sbeti are are flat butterfly. Uh oh omega's got a clasp that sits I I mean it like sits like fifteen millimeters off your wrist probably. I hate 'em. |
| Andrew | Huge. It I hate 'em. Um overlapping mesh, which which may means that however the size of your wrist, that diameter is getting double bracelet coverage. |
| Everett | And in Especially |
| Everett | because you've got, you know, a uh real talk like fourteen and a half millimeters on top of the wrist, and you've got another probably fifteen underneath the wrist. It's a wild wild dimension. That's |
| Andrew | smart, actually. Anyway, |
| Everett | but this is not new. None of this is new. Um you know, their last sort of bond release that |
| Everett | that black anyway, uh uh I |
| Everett | don't hate these watches. I actually kind of think they're fun given what we got. we do have different um |
| Everett | we do have different rotors on each of these. |
| Everett | The good guys has like a big like sort of |
| Everett | barrel. The inside |
| Andrew | of the barrel, like the showing the the rifling. Yeah. |
| Everett | The rifle that's right. The rifling. But it ta it it's it's a bizarre rotor because it |
| Everett | covers almost the entire |
| Everett | m movement. And then |
| Everett | the specter shows a little bit more of the movement. it's the spectre octopus. Is that what that is? |
| Andrew | No, I think it's a sp it's the point of a of a spear. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. So septident. A septent |
| Everett | six top. Yeah. Nor |
| Andrew | is it a spider. What is |
| Everett | it? I think it's supposed to be an octopus, |
| Andrew | but there are but seven t tentacles. So here |
| Everett | we are. So here we are. These are fine. I I don't hate them. Um I think they're I think they're beautiful executions of a flawed watch. Um of course we've got Cosk, the you know, the full meal deal, uh coaxial, right, which is probably why this watch is so cumbersome. Um, obviously a fantastic, mechanically fantastic watch. the platinum versions, I'll just say the platinum versions of these have like a gu style. These are cool. Uh, but they're 100,000. The package is 100 grand. So I I I mean what are we what are we talking about here? Or eighty |
| Andrew | nine thousand case back or on the specter rotor. I'm not gonna call an octopus. I'm not stupid. Uh I know things. |
| Everett | Don't make wild claims. Okay. |
| Andrew | I apologize. I was told |
| Everett | there wouldn't be fact checking. Uh what's next? |
| Andrew | Uh next up for me. Oh boy, what do I want to talk about? Where are we at? We're at okay, we're kind of getting in there. Um I just have a short little little one to mention that I thought was interesting and I liked. Uh Zinn has released the 103 Luftanza to celebrate the 100 year of Luftanza Airlines. I think it's cool. It's a lovely execution of the 103 with the 12, 9, 6 o'clock subdials. Uh a nice kind of light charcoal black on the dial, light gr gray on the sub-dials with yellow accents at the twelve and six and a twelve on the second hand. Uh it's a good a good addition of the 103. They're doing um how many of these? Only a hundred. Uh but they're they're not crazy prices either. They're 30, 250 money, uh, and you can buy them through Luftanza. Is that how you say that word? |
| Everett | I yes. Ish, |
| Everett | maybe? Probably I think it seems |
| Andrew | right ish. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh can we do a twofer here? Uh |
| Everett | and and I don't know why I'm including |
| Everett | these as a twofer, but they felt like uh uh w when we talked about this earlier. Uh |
| Andrew | Oh I know what we were talking about. Yeah, okay. Yes, you can't. |
| Everett | Yeah, like Armageddon and uh I |
| Andrew | you you said like a a trio of movies and I was like no, there's a far more accurate |
| Everett | Yeah. Armageddon |
| Andrew | and Deep Impact. They came out like two weeks apart. And one was like a modern blockbuster and the other one was like a nineties blockbuster. It's bizarre how different those movies are made and like made concurrently with one another. |
| Everett | I think this feels to me the similar. and and and I I gotta I gotta say, these watches are not identical. These watches are not identical. In fact, they're different in some really meaningful ways. |
| Everett | But they're but they are they they sort of feel like |
| Everett | I I just saw these and I was like, that's crazy. So uh |
| Everett | without any more lead burying. |
| Everett | Uh Hamilton this week introduced the |
| Everett | w what they're calling the |
| Everett | American classic cushion mechanical and and almost at the same time ro,ughly uh at the same time, Timex has released what they're calling the Marlin Chatham automatic. uh look, you might you might be one of those people, you look at these two watches and you're like, Eric, you're stupid, these watches are not similar even a little |
| Everett | bit, but I think they are |
| Everett | very similar watches. To be releasing |
| Andrew | uh watches of this era of similar ilk at the same time, yes, they're they're uh nobody can what it is these are nobody can say that you're stupid for this opinion. Exclusively this in a silo you cannot be called stupid for this. |
| Everett | I'm not stupid. These are both I'm gonna call |
| Everett | square-ish TV-ish. |
| Everett | These are our watches reminiscent |
| Everett | of sort of like pre-mid century men's watch design, in particular the Hamilton is. Um and and their dials |
| Everett | are sort of evocative of that |
| Everett | era. Timex probably more mid century, whereas Hamilton has gone back |
| Everett | a little bit further, like thirties, maybe twenties a little bit. Um |
| Everett | and it and we're |
| Everett | not gonna talk about all the details of each one of these watches because there's a few different releases in particular. Hamilton's got a few different iterations of these. |
| Everett | Um but but it's similar. Similar and then also totally different when you consider what the |
| Everett | watch is. So let's talk about the Timex first. So Timex has released really just two. So we've got a sort of |
| Everett | silvery white dial and a steel case. This is |
| Everett | more of a Tonneau, I would say, |
| Everett | with the lug integration. And then also a black with a gold PVD. These are both fully polished watches. Very much retro styled. Marlin |
| Everett | design language all over these things. I really like these Andrew. These awesome |
| Andrew | how much I liked them too. Miyota |
| Everett | eighty two fifteens, um uh w we've got a |
| Everett | we've got a great set well, let's hold on. That was excited. We've got a good set of dimensions. Thirty-six millimeters |
| Andrew | with a forty-five forty four point five millimeter |
| Everett | length, which is gonna wear well, that's gonna wear probably like a 38mm round watch. Twelve millimeters thick. Okay, fine. Fine. I I accept |
| Everett | 8215 movement. Um and I like it. Andrew, I like it. Well, you |
| Andrew | know what it means? It's sake or Timex is now disclosing to to the the end user the movements that are in their watches. Which hasn't always been the thing in in the in the Marlon. You know, when they first started dropping these automatic movements, it was kind of a mystery. Now they're okay with it. There's we're seeing maturation in real time. |
| Everett | And you know, corners have been cut. We've got mineral crystal, 50 meters of water resistance. This is a really fun watch, especially when you consider that the MSRP on these things I think is like 350 bucks under |
| Andrew | 300 bucks they are you're gonna get these |
| Everett | under 300 bucks no no no the msrp |
| Andrew | on the steel 289 US money on the gold tone 299 US money. |
| Everett | there you go. I'm sorry, I was wrong. So it so realistically you're gonna be getting these things close to two hundred. Maybe it'll be |
| Andrew | stupid. Yeah. That sucks. Great. |
| Everett | This is fun. It's good. It's affordable. It's accessible. If you want one, you can probably get one. Even if you |
| Everett | like you're you're kinda hard up but |
| Everett | you really needed something and you want to talk to your wife and or your husband or whatever. I don't know. Uh this is this is in the world, right? You can do this. Hamilton, on the other hand, has taken a slightly different approach. They have made a watch that I'm gonna |
| Everett | say, I'm gonna say is in every single |
| Everett | way, better. This is a Hamilton watch. This is |
| Everett | really, really good. |
| Everett | So let's let's talk about dimensions. We've got two cases. One is a 30 millimeter case, the other is a Don't hear 34 and think 34. Hear 34 and think, you know, maybe 36 and a half, 37. |
| Everett | great size on these. Uh, |
| Everett | we've got H42 movements, which are rebadged at a 7001 with 57 hours of power reserve. Both of these are 8mm thin. |
| Everett | Inclusive of the crystal. Um and they're just lovely and |
| Everett | and you can get these things for just under a thousand dollars on steel and a thousand ninety five in pvd. Um |
| Everett | man, I really, really deco |
| Everett | numerals on these things. I think Hamilton, uh oh, or there's Roman numerals. There's a Roman numeral. |
| Andrew | Yeah, what's up with this engraved case? |
| Everett | It is, yeah, so that's in the bigger, that's in the 34 millimeters. That's |
| Andrew | right. And that is very |
| Everett | much a case language that's evocative of like watches of the 20s and 30s. That is something you absolutely would have expected to see, not in the size of course it would have been a it would have been a 25 or 26 millimeter watch um |
| Everett | it they've released that 34 millimeter |
| Everett | in with a really funky a really funky deco futuristic uh font and an engraved case, like a |
| Everett | deco engraved case. Terrific. |
| Everett | These are winners. These are real, |
| Everett | real good watches, and they're winners. Um |
| Everett | dimensionally these things are fantastic. Borderline perfect. Wonderful onion crawns. Now look, does that take away from what Timex has done? I don't think so. I don't think so. Timex has made a watch for the people. Hamilton's not they're in a thousand bucks, right? That's not crazy. These are |
| Andrew | wholly different categories. Different budget movies here. |
| Everett | That's right. One of these one of these sprung |
| Everett | for Ben Apleck and the other didn't, |
| Everett | right? they sprung for to discover |
| Andrew | Elijah Wood. Was |
| Everett | it Elijah Wood? Yeah, Elijah Wood. |
| Andrew | Uh gosh, it's been a long time since I've seen Morgan Freeman. I guess they they blew the budget on Morgan Freeman. So |
| Everett | I like both of these watches. I'm just gonna be really clear. The Timex is a is a I'm not gonna call it a novelty. It's not a novelty. It's a good watch. It's a good watch. The Hamilton is a fucking banger for a thousand bucks. Holy shit. Real like I don't care how enthusiastic you are about your watch enthusiasm. That's a fucking great watch. And |
| Andrew | then when you when you look at it through the lens of Hamilton drops so many bullshit lines that they come out and they're like, oh yeah, by the way, here's this also not bullshit line concurrent with some nonsense. Uh yeah. |
| Everett | Okay. I actually watch those I |
| Andrew | gotta go back and watch it. watch them both. Wa uh watch them like in in proximity to an each other. It shows this interesting shift in uh movie making because the color palette of Deep Impact is 80s, nineties, e the even the saturation in the film that was used versus Omageddon, which feels like it could have been made in 2010 with just the special effects and the colors and it's crazy that these two movies were were are contemporaries. |
| Everett | I did watch Armageddon recently, uh not |
| Everett | that recently, but recently |
| Everett | ish and with the kids and I did not love it. Uh that moon scene I was or that not moon scene, the the asteroid scene where everything goes to shit. I was like, ooh, this is bad. |
| Andrew | Yeah, it's bad. It's bad. |
| Everett | Yeah, it's bad. Okay, that's enough. I love both these watches. but I think for for a slightly more mature collector or a slightly more mature enthusiast, the Hamilton is a wonderful, wonderful watch versus uh the Timex, which is |
| Everett | this is terrific. This is terrific. If |
| Everett | you're if you're a new collector and you want something that feels like this, Timex is a great |
| Everett | option. Concur. Uh did you have any w other watches or do you want to just move it right along? I |
| Andrew | closed all the links. Andrew, other things, |
| Everett | what do you got? I have another thing. Did I send you the link |
| Andrew | already? you sure did |
| Everett | not? Okay Okay., well I'll |
| Andrew | send it to you. So I recently had well, I didn't have to, but I chose to upgrade my wallet game. I've been rocking the uh the same trifold style wallet for my entire life. And um was like, man, I I want to try something a little bit different. So I got one of these front pocket wallet things. |
| Everett | Is it a shelled cord of an iron heart? |
| Andrew | No, nor is it made from reclaimed saddles of famous cowboys and gunslingers. Alright, |
| Everett | carry on. I guess |
| Andrew | I'll just you what's your other thing? Uh so I went on the hunt for what I wanted to uh for a wallet. And I was like, okay, a front pocket wallet makes the most sense. I I do have to carry some cards. Um I talked to the guys about it and they're like, yeah, I carry two things in my wallet. I'm like, I can't, I don't, I don't that feels reckless. that level of I can't I can't do that. I can't live with my driver's license, a credit card, and a picture of my family. Like that's just nope. Not comfortable leaving the house without my Costco card. Because maybe I have to go to Costco. Or maybe just someone has to go to Costco. I'll be like, oh, I got my Costco card. I'll get a hot dog while I'm there. Like I there's just there's some things that I'm not comfortable being without. So I opted for uh a company called Mountain Voyage Co. Uh and they have two options for a money clip. They have like an elastic option with a uh just like a metal stopper on it to to offer uh some resistance. But I got the the clip version of it and man um it it took me about a week of carrying of not carrying my wallet in my back pocket um to stop panicking like oh god where'd I leave my wallet I love this thing it's got the RFID prevention thing. Um I know that's a thing. The reality is, my I punch in my card on the internet, that's far more access than my pocket. So I'm not super worried about it. It's crazy lightweight. It organizes my cards. I rarely carry cash. So it's just like I didn't I didn't need all that. The bulk reduction has been fantastic. It falls right into my pocket. I love it. I'm never going back to a huge carry all my receipts from the last three years trifold wallet. These are like twenty five bucks on Amazon. The Ridge wallets are kind of the the originators of this. They're like a hundred bucks. But you're never going to replace them. It's two slabs of metal with a with an inch of elastic on each side. |
| Everett | These are great. This is this |
| Andrew | is the uh this is my new wallet. |
| Everett | Cool. the hard edges don't bother |
| Everett | you, huh? They it's too small to bother |
| Andrew | me. Yeah, okay. |
| Everett | Yeah. They're cool. They're made in golden, right? |
| Andrew | Mm-hmm. Yeah, these are cool. |
| Everett | i y you know, I've I've had the same wallet for quite |
| Everett | a while now and I I love it, but |
| Everett | every once in a while I do think should I change that? I'm like, nah, I shouldn't change that. But something like this would be w worth a w worth a look at. |
| Andrew | I I went I went to it because I I intentionally wanted to carry less things in major non-US cities where like if I get pickpocketed at home, it's annoying. |
| Everett | Yeah. But it's not a it's not an actual |
| Andrew | problem. If you get pickpocketed in another continent, that becomes really problematic really quick. Um Um so I figured it's it's easier for people to feel up my buns than it is to feel up my front. So I wanted a front pocket wallet. That was ultimately the the driver for that. Um yeah, I love it. |
| Everett | Especially the way you walk too. Yeah, |
| Andrew | oh yeah. It's always it's always butt out. I'm always encouraging the button touch. Uh isn't there a signfut episode with with George's wallet and like all the shit that he has in it? |
| Everett | Yes. I'm sure there is. Yeah, the constanza |
| Everett | wallet. Great. I like it. Good other |
| Andrew | thing. Recommend. |
| Everett | Interrupt good. Do me. I recently |
| Everett | i i if if you're a man who spends any time on the internet |
| Everett | thinking about clothes, style, fashion clothes, uh you have no doubt in the last two or three years uh |
| Everett | had the recommendation that you that you |
| Everett | look for a pair of OG one oh seven sort of Vietnam era |
| Everett | military pants. The fatigue |
| Everett | pant. This was a uh |
| Everett | pair of pants that was popular |
| Andrew | in the inseam than the type of clothes that I've been recommended. |
| Everett | Percent cotton, what they call reverse sateen. So |
| Everett | the military actually developed this technology |
| Everett | or sort of did a bunch of studies to find out that sateen fabric, if you turn it inside out, is just absolutely terrific. And so these pants have kind of stood the test of time. You know what that |
| Andrew | is? It's that some dumbass put them on inside out and was like, no, they work better this way. And they're like, it's impossible. And they're like, we'll check it out anyway. And then we'll feed them some extra crayons as a reward. |
| Everett | So interestingly, Andrew, that would be a totally realistic possibility. However, the military's research on this is incredibly well documented. So their search for this fabric uh is one of the best sort of US military documented projects that I've ever seen. Um it's kind of it's almost absurd. Uh with that said, they made these pants, they have stood really stood the test time. So if you if you really want to look for one now you can find vintage pairs that are in really good shape um or and some that are in less good shape. But it's kind of a you know it's kind of a minefield and especially in the last couple of years the d the demand for these things has gone way up. So there have been a number of companies, reproduction companies, that have come back out and released versions of these. Telesynths got a version, Stan Ray's got a really nice one. Um, Orslow has a famous version, but I think like everybody, like Taylor Stitch and like y you name it, Tint Flinder, Flint Tinder, whatever. Yes, correct. Um there are just a dozen a dozen companies making these and they range in price from, you know, a hundred and to you know, I think the Orslows are kind of the gold standard and they're like maybe two seventy five or three hundred. So anyway, I you know, in my in my hunt for this, I find like |
| Everett | uh uh some people on Reddit |
| Everett | talking about there's a couple of companies that are really like exclusive to China like Chinese factory companies. You know, think about San Martin when it comes to watches, right? These are like direct to consumer factory companies that have developed a quote unquote brand and then via AliExpress or eBay or whatever, uh what what's the other one that's not AliExpress? No, it's not Timu. It's uh anyway, it doesn't matter. But they have these marketplaces and um I kind of start looking at one of these. I find this company is called Red Tornado, and they've got a really great reputation. The people on Reddit who talk about these saying how they're they do a really good job. And um I find that it's a 15-ounce a hundred, which is but half again what the original, I think eight and a half to nine and a half sort of varying weights, fabric weights. I found a 15-ounce, 100% cotton reverse sateen um fatigue pamp, OG 107 fatigue pamp, made by this company called Red Tornado. And they introduced it earlier this year. And the sort of initial reviews were really good. I think 15 ounces is pretty cool. That's like a really like really nice heavyweight fabric, and supposedly all the details are good. And they're on AliExpress, and I'm like, well, fuck it. I'm just gonna gonna t I'm do it. I'm gonna figure out what size I should order because that's always a uh that's always a gamble. Um but I you know read as much as I can and they've got some pretty good information and so I anyway I, got these things and Andrew. Andrew, these things are so good. I am over the moon with these pants. So it is a traditional full cut high waisted fatigue pan um made in China with Chinese cotton, which uh which which is uh uh you know or or you know it's cotton coming from China which is potentially controversial. If you want to Google that, go ahead. I'm not gonna talk anymore about it. But by all accounts, these are maybe or probably American cotton. Anyway, I uh say no more. it's a hundred percent cotton and uh they are fantastic, Andrew. These are like maybe one of my the coolest articles of clothing I've ever purchased. Uh we will put a link to these in the show notes off of AliExpress. AliExpress has become way easier to order from than it was, you know, five years ago. Um Yeah, |
| Everett | when we started ordering from Ali in twenty twenty, |
| Unknown | it was not like you weren't |
| Andrew | super sure you were gonna get your shit. Yeah, |
| Everett | that's right. That's right. And still the case, depending on |
| Everett | the retailer. But y you know, AliExpress is just a marketplace, so you're still relying anyway, these came quick. I got 'em in like ten days from China through customs and everything. |
| Andrew | DHL. uh no. |
| Everett | No, a different it is like uh GoFo or I don't I don't know the shipping. Uh but yeah, they they came, they're great and I just absolutely love them. So we'll put a link in the show notes. I'm not gonna tell you to get these because I |
| Everett | I think it's the type of thing, you know, maybe |
| Everett | do some research and kind of figure out what you like. For me, I was like, these sound interesting enough to me and the the fabric was really the thing that that sold me. A fifteen ounce cotton reverse settine is a wild fabric. It almost doesn't make sense. And I was like, I just have to. |
| Andrew | If you remember Zons from the 90s and early 2000s, that's what they remind me |
| Everett | of. I don't remember that. |
| Andrew | You don't remember Zons? You remember Jinkos though. I |
| Everett | yeah, I saw the picture you sent. I I do remember Jinkos, but these aren't like Jinkos. They're I mean they're it's a fatigue you know, they are full cut. So they're it's not like a narrow. There are brands that sell narrower versions of these. Stan Ray in particular is one that I think they sell a trimmer. But these are full cut and and they're high-waisted. |
| Andrew | Yeah, they're the they're like the pre they're like 1950s fatigue pants. Like pre-Vietnam pre cargo pant, fatigue pants. |
| Everett | Meant to sit at your waist. They've got |
| Everett | baker's pockets. Um you know, panel like patch like patch baker's pockets. Um they're fantastic. Andrew, I love them. I love them. |
| Everett | I love them. And I said I just said I'm |
| Everett | not going to tell you you should buy them. But if you don't have a pair of fatigue pants, maybe check them out. And if you want something that's absurdly overbuilt and heavyweight, check these ones out. I don't think there's anything else like these on the market. 15 ounce, fantastic. Level. |
| Andrew | That's a that's a really heavyweight material. |
| Everett | It is, it is, but because it's |
| Everett | a teen, so like compare that to a 15-ounce denim. A 15-ounce denim, if you've ever broken in a pair of 15-ounce denim pants, it's the they're sturdy and it's hard and they kind of like they press into you where it uh You |
| Andrew | gotta wear them like boots. You gotta like get in the water |
| Everett | fully submersed and then wear them dry. That's right. That's right. Satine is not that. Satine is a much looser weave. Um the fabric has, you know, the the fibers have more room to sort of live against each other. So it comes |
| Everett | like drapey and and it's a heavyweight |
| Everett | fabric, so it's gonna take some time to break in, but |
| Everett | man, comfortable as all get out, |
| Everett | they look good. Uh man, I'm a I'm a true believer. Red tornado 15 ounce OG 107s. Fantastic. |
| Andrew | Sounds like a hot dog. |
| Everett | It does the red tornado, yeah. I want that. I kind of want that hot dog right now. |
| Andrew | There's a hot dog place down the street that has a really good looking Chicago dog and I'm gonna go get it. I've eaten it mostly food trucks. Yeah they're all so good. |
| Everett | Hawaii yeah, Hawaii's doing their thing with food trucks these days. So |
| Andrew | Morimoto's restaurant isn't open because of the tornado a couple weeks ago or the hurricane a couple weeks ago. They're having to do some renovations from some flooding. Otherwise I was gonna go to Morimoto's restaurant. Bums me out. |
| Everett | Where are you gonna eat tonight? Well, |
| Andrew | the next meal I'm gonna eat is that Chicago dog at the hot dog place two blocks away. |
| Everett | Love it. Love it. Andrew, anything else you want |
| Everett | to add before we go? Uh |
| Andrew | I hate to tell you this, but my the recorder died in the last ten minutes. It's |
| Everett | okay. I don't know when it's okay. I can use the backup. I can use the backup. |
| Andrew | I got nothing else to add. I'll start the outro |
| Everett | again. Andrew, anything else you want to add before we go? |
