Synopsis¶
In this episode of Forty and Twenty: The WatchClicker Podcast, hosts Andrew and Everett return after taking their first unannounced month-long break in eight years of podcasting. Both hosts had recently traveled to Europe for the first time—Everett to Ireland and Scotland, and Andrew through Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, where he visited the Christopher Ward and Farrer showrooms in the UK.
The discussion covers numerous watch releases from their hiatus, including Christopher Ward's new Bisque line C60 Trident models and C63 Sealander chronograph, Tudor's reintroduced North Flag (now one word) as a GMT, Yema's Superman with steel blue dial and in-house movement, Studio Underdog collaborations, and Panerai's new 42mm Luminor with 500m water resistance. They express particular enthusiasm for Yema's ability to offer in-house movements under $2,000 and Christopher Ward's continued bracelet innovations, including their new iLink system. Everett notes some disappointment that Tudor's North Flag revision feels "safer" than the quirky original, while both hosts praise Panerai for finally creating a more wearable size. The episode concludes with "other things" segments covering Andrew's JBL 770 noise-canceling headphones and Everett's quest for a vintage 1970s Holubar mountain parka, which he successfully found and wore throughout his trip to Ireland and Scotland.

| Andrew | Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to Forty and Twenty The WatchClicker Podcast with your hosts Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? You're muted. I'm muted. |
| Everett | I'm good, Andrew. Uh I'm good. |
| Andrew | And welcome back. Welcome back. We took an un uh an unannounced holiday. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah, we did. And I |
| Everett | don't uh you know, I think there's been some fear keeping us from having done that in eight years of doing this. You |
| Andrew | know, it intel you get a sabbatical every seven years, so it seems appropriate that we got a holiday after eight. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah. You know, when I it we we didn't totally plan it, but we didn't all we also didn't make effort to plan around it. So we knew there's gonna be some travel, we knew there's gonna be some other stuff going on, and uh by the time we were in it, I was like, you know, this feels right. This feels right. not not doing the podcast. That actually feels a little wrong. But it felt right to like let's take just a minute, step back, let's do our things. Uh, for me, that was uh you know, in addition to just life, took a trip to Europe, my first European trip. I went to Ireland and Scotland. Uh you you also separately. |
| Andrew | Yeah, not not together. Uh not together. I also I spent two weeks in Europe. Uh I went to Luxembourg and Belgium and France and Germany and uh the Netherlands. |
| Everett | Actual Europe where people don't speak English. |
| Andrew | Uh everyone spoke English. The only places where I encountered like not English speaking people were in Luxembourg, where English is one of their official languages. Everyone else, like they would fight through and try to get some English and we'd do pointy talkie and get there. But the non-Luxembourgish, non-English-speaking people in Luxembourg were just rude about it. Oh |
| Everett | really? Yeah, you you order a croissant |
| Andrew | and the the French-speaking people look at you sideways. Like, bitch, you know what I I'm asking for. I'm even pointing at it. And I said C Vu play. You know I'm trying. It was a really fun trip. It was also my first European vacation experience. It was my first like real travel, like out of the United States. Like I've been to Mexico and Hawaii before, but uh Yeah, |
| Everett | I've traveled quite a bit around North America, but yeah, same for me. Yeah. well, good. It's fun to be back. it's nice to be back. So this is our first recording in I think a month. A |
| Andrew | month, yeah. We took a full month off. Yeah. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh and and the nice part about not recording for a month is there were so many potential watches to talk about. |
| Andrew | Yes. We have weeks where it's like, |
| Everett | well, this is what we got. Kind of |
| Andrew | hate it all. Uh but |
| Everett | not so. Not so not so. we got a lot of good stuff. Andrew I I I do have to ask you, how are you? |
| Andrew | Uh I'm good. I'm also on the heels of vacation and chugging on along, staying busy. Uh I forgot to mention also during my trip we stopped for we stopped in the UK for two days and got to visit the Christopher Ward showroom and the Farrer showroom. Just a showroom, exactly. It's uh it's his house. |
| Everett | Yeah. It's a it's a little compound |
| Andrew | on his property. Uh it seemed sketchy, certainly seemed like we were about to be abducted, but it was a really, really delightful experience. Uh so yeah, got even got to do some watch stuff. |
| Everett | Yeah while we're traveling in Europe. And |
| Andrew | for those of you in Europe who we did not hit up, it was kind of a uh smash and grab through through London. We were there for like 36 hours. |
| Everett | Yeah. I I was in Edinburgh and I managed to meet up with Tom Clemens. Kim and I had brunch with Tom Clemens and at at a beautiful restaurant. And uh yeah, it it was like it was the one watch thing. And I don't think we talked about watches but for about forty five seconds. You know, it was really. Uh it was really nice. Yeah. So here we are. Here we are. And we are here to talk about watches. |
| Andrew | Yeah, we are. We are here to talk about watches. |
| Everett | Uh it in in honor of our in honor of our first vacation, Andrew, do you want to kick us off? Oh. I don't actually know what that means or how that can I |
| Andrew | don't honor the the vacation part of it. Um, but I am gonna kick us off, and I'm gonna kick us off with a watch that I unfortunately did not get to see in person, but I did get to see the embargoed photographs of with Christopher Ward of the um bisquay line that just came out. And man, this is I think a really fantastic update to the C60 Trident. These are just phenomenal. So we've got a couple a few colorways coming in. Um my my the my jam on this is uh you're you're gonna be shocked, is the black. Uh because it's just so good. The bronze and green is absolutely phenomenal. I would I would have done bad things to have seen it in person. Uh they were not expecting me, but they knew I was coming, if that makes any sense. When my friend made the reservation, he included that I was going to be with him. Uh, and we're we're in the middle, we're just chatting with the guy who doesn't know me from Adam, who just is seeing this appointment, and then their marketing fellow comes in and is like, hey, you're from. And I'm like, oh, yeah. But I didn't know this has happened. So I was like, how? There's no way you recognize me because I don't know you. Like, uh, so we chatted for a little bit and they showed me the the product photography for these, uh, weren't any in-person to see. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh, but man, these are cool. the |
| Andrew | bronze and green is just phenomenal. The one thing that I'm I'm not a huge fan of, um, even on the black, is just that it's not quite tan, it's not quite yellow or white, it's just a little bit phoetined, and I could I could do without that. And that's something Christopher Ward has done a lot in their kind of military-inspired mil spec lines is have that Fotina. Um it's part of what they do, but I I could it's not enough of any one of them for it to really hit hit for me. The rest of the watch is fantastic though. |
| Everett | Yeah. No, I I think the I think these are great. They do feel more um I don't know what the right word is. They feel a little less serious than uh Christopher Ward um has felt in recent in recent past. And I mean that in a good way, right? I don't mean that in a bad way. These feel more um casual and. I mean casual like |
| Andrew | they're not the GMT extreme, right? Like |
| Everett | an M51 field jacket or whatever, right? They feel uh vintage without being uh without being uh you know cosplay they they feel you you know i think that big that big dial and the relatively narrow bezel pushed way out there and kind of sloped down it just feels like a chill watch. And actually, Andrew, I'm with you, always with you. Like Fotina is not for me. However, I think the Fotina plays a role here in making this a more approachable, uh a more approachable watch. This is a pretty serious i mean the the watch is spec relatively well and yet this watch doesn't feel like it's uh like trying to convince you of its own. It doesn't |
| Andrew | feel like the trident, right? Which is this kind of overbuilt tool watch. It is the trident in an inner in an iteration of it, but it doesn't feel its chest isn't puffed out and it's not like walking with imaginary lat syndrome. Uh it's just it's a little bit um whimsical is almost it. |
| Everett | Yeah. we've got uh something I've never seen before here is surface hardening on the aluminum bezels to 250 Vickers. Is that I've I've never seen that |
| Andrew | before choose that over sapphire. I think I think part of it is the texture that it gives. Sapphire just has a really, really single use for a bezel insert. |
| Everett | Yeah. I think aluminum's the right play |
| Andrew | here. The other thing that I got to see while I was there, uh were these iLinks, and these iLinks are as good as you hoped they would be. Okay. They are as intuitive, they're as as easy to use. Uh they're fantastic. The only other application that I can think of, or the only other implementation of this type of bracelet that I've seen is in Cartier, and it is every bit as good as Cartier's. |
| Everett | You know, Christopher Ward's really doing a great job with their bracelet bracelet development. It's slow. it never feels like a big announcement, but I can't think of another company. Uh y you know, you know, Monta in some ways, but really Christopher Ward is a leader in pushing forward its bracelets. The bracelet's not an afterthought. The bracelet's not that they're not satisfying using existing like means and methods. They're constantly trying to make these bracelets better. And not just, you know, one thing. it seems like every year Christopher Ward is like, hey, we improved this aspect of the bracelet, and now we're we're going to spread that across all of our models, which all use these very few bracelets, and so you're going to be able to reap the rewards of that with pretty much any watch that you purchase from us. I love that. |
| Andrew | Once they finally put their foot on the gas to to do bracelet development, because there was a time when they their bracelets were were subpar relative to the rest of their watch. And now I mean their their bracelets are as good as anybody's. |
| Everett | I don't remember the last time we had Mike France on the show, probably twenty twenty two ish. Uh but yeah, w that was right before they sort of made that big push. |
| Andrew | 'Cause I uh it it wasn't because of me. They knew that the bracelets didn't taper. But that was a component that was one of uh the conversation points. I don't remember if we did it on or off air, but uh they knew the they knew it. |
| Everett | Yeah, and you could tell Mike knew that they |
| Everett | were gonna push in this direction too. He like had a little twinkle in his eye when he started the like he didn't take offense. He was like, I got you. I |
| Andrew | hear, yeah, I hear you. We hear you. We hear |
| Everett | you. Yeah. And it it was, it |
| Andrew | was really uh yeah, their their bracelets are just they they hold up. they're a total package now. It's not a good watch with an okay bracelet. It's a it's a great watch, great bracelet. Uh and these are gonna be no different. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh Andrew, uh |
| Andrew | I I didn't get to see a pan Am in person. They said those went away like hotcakes, but I was prepared to purchase one if I saw one in person. |
| Everett | Um, I don't know when it was, and I don't actually even recall how certain I was about it, but at some point in the last year. At some point in the last |
| Andrew | time. |
| Everett | I and I think you agreed with me, uh predicted that Tudor's coming back with the North Flag. It's gonna happen. This is gonna happen. I predict this is gonna happen. Well |
| Andrew | we we wielded it into existence. |
| Everett | You know, obviously um that wasn't like the most uh that wasn't the most risky prediction ever made, but it just felt like the time was right. And alas, Geneva Watch Days, Tudor reintroduces the North flag. Um obviously that's what they've done. They've done a few uh a few interesting things with the release. Well, they've done a whole lot of interesting things. But the thing that first struck me was that North Flag is now one word. And did they lose the |
| Andrew | IP, do you think? I mean, |
| Everett | I don't think so. I can't imagine. I I just |
| Everett | don't get I I saw that and I was like, that looks wrong. North flag wasn't one word. And sure enough, no, in 2015, Tudor released the North Space Flag. And in 2026, Tudor released the North Flag. All one word. I don't feel any particular way about it. It is a good way to set the |
| Andrew | tone for I'm not grumpy. |
| Everett | I don't think it's a bad move. I was just like, what? Why? uh look. I'm going to everybody's looked seen this watch at this point. If you're listening to this show, you've seen this watch. You've thought about this watch. You've made opinions about this watch. Some of you probably bought this |
| Andrew | watch. Certainly. Well i it it |
| Everett | and and good for you, that's an expensive purchase. Um with that said, I'm I'm gonna lead here with my overall feeling, which is a I'm excited that Tutors brought this back. I've lot long thought that this was uh something that |
| Everett | Tutor could and should |
| Everett | be selling. Uh and and and B, I'm sad that I think they've neutered it a little bit. Uh what we have here is a relatively safe, a relatively safe watch that utilizes that utilizes some of the characteristics of the watch previously known as the Tudor North Space Flag. and yeah, so I'm disappointed about that. I I'm disappointed that this watch isn't weirder. Okay, so we'll we'll leave that alone for a second. We'll leave that alone for a second. Watches |
| Andrew | like Shader Sanders. Uh all the hype and just |
| Everett | you know the reality is that the North Flag sold, I think, between roughly 2015 and 2022, seven years or so. And it it was not a hugely popular watch. |
| Andrew | Hey, there was a lot of competition in that space for it. I mean there was the Ranger was out at the time. I was pre uh the pre Black Bay. I think maybe the Black Bay was meant to be the |
| Everett | Black Bay was out of the point. it just wasn't ever it just wasn't ever, you know garnering the attention that uh the you know the palagos or uh other uh other watches in tutor's lineup had had garnered so tutor got rid of it i think that's fine, right? you can still go get an old |
| Everett | North Fag uh North flag uh |
| Everett | Gen 1 um if that's something you want. Um but but it's gone. It's gone. This new version, again, I I think this is safer. So a couple things right off the bat. We've instead of a time-only three-hander with a power reserve, we've got a GMT. I I let's just sort of put that on the table. The North Flag is now a GMT watch. Also. Which Okay, why not? Why not? Tutor's other sort of notable uh Tutor's other sort of notable um GMT. They make a few, but uh really when I think of Tutor and GMT, I think of the Black Bay Pro. This is in my mind a much more compelling GMT than the Black Bay Pro. The Black Bay Pro has uh always been, in my mind, problematic. People buy them. People buy them. It's a beautiful watch, but it's a chunk. And it it's problematic because it's a chunk. This, you know, I think is almost two millimeters thinner than the Black Bay Pro. Um and |
| Andrew | Yeah, these are what uh where is it? |
| Everett | Yeah, it's like thirteen thirteen five, I think. And it is uh and it is a this is a handsome watch. no doubt about it. This is a handsome watch. We still have that stylized 12 and 6 with uh with um you know printed uh printed rectangles around the rest of the way. They've added 24 hour markers a on the outside ring. They've gotten rid of the they've gotten rid of the black ceramic ring that I think was sort of uh a th thinging and I loved it. And they've also obviously they've gotten rid of the power reserve indicator. |
| Everett | Probably for good reason. Nobody liked the power |
| Everett | reserve indicator. Nobody likes a power reserve indicator on an automatic watch. It's kind of stupid. I'm gonna say I I don't even necessarily, I'm not even necessarily married to the power reserve indicator, but I love that the power reserve indicator made this watch weird. |
| Andrew | Everything about that watch was weird. The case shape was weird. The lug shape was kind of weird. |
| Everett | And so we've still got we've got a slim-down case. It's the same size, but everything is smaller. The lug-to-lug is smaller. It's a little bit thinner. I mean it's it's just a slightly more wearable watch. Um and it's probably a more wearable watch. The uh they've curved the lugs down, whereas the original kind of sat high and proud. They've not only shortened the lug |
| Everett | to lug, but they've also curved those |
| Everett | lugs down. So it it's probably ergonomically a much better feeling watch. Uh bracelets basically the same. It looks |
| Andrew | like it could be new old stock. They've |
| Everett | added a bit of a curve. Uh they've added a bit of a curve to the body. And so this is undeniably oh and they changed out the they changed out the second's hand a little bit uh this is undeniably a |
| Everett | a good revision to |
| Everett | this watch um in in some ways certainly ergonomically I think in some ways aesthetically and yet I'm a little disappointed andrew oh also it's fifty is fifty five hundred bucks. It's an expensive watch, right? It's an expensive watch. it is, I think, up there with Tudor's most expensive watches, which |
| Andrew | why shouldn't be? It's fair. It's uh everything about it says it should be. |
| Everett | Yeah, that's right. That's right. In-house movement. Yeah, you know, a actually one thing I didn't realize until I was really reading about this. The North Flag was Tudor's exhibition of its new in-house movement. |
| Andrew | I didn't know that. Of its first in-house |
| Everett | movement. And yeah, you know, this is being released on what Tudor is referring to as its hundredth birthday, um, which is kind of not real. Uh Tudor, I I think the IP for Tutor was introduced in 1926. I think Tutor uh |
| Everett | was the Tutor brand was |
| Everett | being used on watches at some point in the 30s, but it's not until really in the 40s when watches when tutor watches are being released. and then they went away. No, the |
| Andrew | first paperwork was filed a hundred years ago. |
| Everett | So it you know that that is what it is. We're talking about the North Flag. And so I I'm I'm okay with this watch. I like this watch. I uh the watch in a vacuum is fine. I'm not gonna actually present any complaints about this watch because I think it's a great watch. It just saddens me a little bit that the funky, weird, adventurous North flag has become and sorry, I'm gonna say it like all of Tudor's releases, which is to say safe and close to the vest. |
| Andrew | I'm good with that. Yeah. |
| Everett | Yeah. I'm good with that. Yeah. I I'm good with it too, but I'm a little disappointed by it. |
| Andrew | I I think it's I think it's reasonable. I I think reviving what's almost like a cult classic is nigh on impossible. |
| Everett | Yeah. No, you you're you're right. You're right. |
| Andrew | And the reason it was a cult classic. And that's true |
| Everett | for movies that,'s true for anything |
| Andrew | that has anything that has like an emotional uh what's the word I'm looking for? In a rational emotional attachment to, you're not gonna be able to revive it. It's going to fall on its face. It's either going to dissatisfy the people who have loved it always, or it will continue to be weird and be appreciated only by the people who have left it away. |
| Everett | Yeah, no, it's good it's it's it's a good point. And it's the right point to make Andrew. Uh I but I can be sad. |
| Andrew | Just don't do the North flag. They didn't, they did the North flag. |
| Everett | The North flag. Yeah. So you |
| Andrew | know, this is the the more handsome junior uh |
| Everett | what's next. Oh, another |
| Andrew | Christopher Ward in the C63 lineup. I'm digging the the ass that they're putting into the C63. We have the C63 Sealander chronograph. Uh totally mechanical chronograph. This is terrific. And it's a C63 platform. So you already know what this watch looks like. Uh it's got really great shaped lugs, three six nine some uh registers |
| Everett | coming, very fine. |
| Andrew | Uh yeah Uh no it's funny the the code to my uh Airbnb rhymed with that. So I that's how I remember the code. Three six nine |
| Everett | damn she fine. Uh that's how |
| Andrew | I remembered it. Um uh so we have some interesting colors here. Uh we have a traditional black, a traditional white. Uh it's a panda, and then an all-black, so black sub-registers. We have a pink with black sub-dials, an interesting green with black subdials. I think that might have been better with white subdials. Or maybe color matched. I don't know. I really like the green, but the black doesn't land for me. |
| Everett | Do you have a I I know you hate to apply names to uh that's pistachio though, right? |
| Andrew | Yeah, but pistachios are green. |
| Everett | Okay. like names outside of I |
| Andrew | don't know how to name colors man. But that's pistachio. |
| Everett | Okay. is it not gonna grumble if I if I call that pistachio? |
| Andrew | Is it not green also? It no it is. |
| Everett | I'm not criticizing your use of the word green. I'm saying like if we're gonna be a little bit more specific. A youre okay with that specificity? |
| Andrew | I accept pistachio. These |
| Everett | things slap, dude. Uh yes. |
| Andrew | Uh polished lacquer, white, black, pink, sky blue, or pistachio, uh, recess subdials, applied loop applied luminous indices, 41mm case, 48 lug to lug, 139 thick on this SW510-1 automatic chronograph, manual winding, hacking seconds, 100 meters of water resistance. And here's the the real uh the real slapper. Uh under 3,000 bucks on a bracelet. |
| Everett | yeah. 2550, right? Yeah. Or twenty five fifty euro. So |
| Andrew | yeah. Yeah. So I mean you yeah, you might be into the it's it's twenty six hundred and twenty-five US money. |
| Everett | Yeah, two thousand seven hundred and sixty seven on a bracelet. |
| Andrew | Oh yeah. Bader bracelet with i link, yeah. Yeah, on the beta. So but we're still coming in under three thousand dollars. |
| Everett | Under three thousand. Yeah. Uh you well, I don't know |
| Andrew | how customs is gonna get you coming across the pond. |
| Everett | Yeah, that's a good point. Um I mean can't you buy can't you like get these in Houston |
| Everett | or whatever? Uh |
| Andrew | you I'm they have to be in their in their showrooms. |
| Everett | You think, yeah. Um and |
| Andrew | there's there's five in these United States right now. And I got a little teaser that we should expect one on the West Coast. |
| Everett | Oh wow. Mm-hmm. It's gotta be LA. |
| Andrew | One would think. Yeah. Um maybe |
| Everett | San Francisco, but probably LA. My guess would |
| Andrew | be LA. Yeah. Yeah. |
| Everett | Um no dude, these are freaking rad, man. Oh, they say pistachio. That that's their own word. |
| Andrew | I thought I thought that's why you were being a dick about it. |
| Everett | no. I uh no no. I they use that word. No, |
| Everett | I didn't realize it. Yeah. |
| Everett | Uh no, these are fucking |
| Everett | great, dude. uh Christopher Ward |
| Andrew | can do no wrong right now. Everything they're hitting, they're hitting out of the park. |
| Everett | Yeah, well that you know that might be a little bit |
| Andrew | Where'd they miss in the last two years? I don't |
| Everett | know if they missed anywhere. Where did they even |
| Andrew | send up a foul in the last two years? Christopher |
| Everett | Ward has been a company I've always loved. like |
| Everett | really low-hanging fruit with Christopher Ward. It's that their prices are climbing so often and aggressively. But I |
| Everett | think that they are they're doing it the right way, right? They're showing the development |
| Everett | in real time. They're showing the |
| Everett | work that they're doing. You know, we just praised them on all their work bracelet work, right? So y |
| Everett | you know, there was a time when Christopher Ward was a sub thousand dollar watch company. And they're just clearly not that. |
| Andrew | Well they're not making sub thousand dollar watches anymore. All their manufacturing has improved. They're using higher quality movements. They're using more development and technology. |
| Everett | I I'm just saying, like there is that uh uh and of course every watch company wants to scale up, right? If everybody could sell a thirty thousand dollar watch, maybe they would do well, I don't know, maybe not. But you know, you know, the long and the short of it is, yeah, they want to make a better watch and be able to have people pay people pay for that watch. |
| Andrew | They want to be able to pay the people to make that watch. |
| Everett | This is I this is great. it does give me a little bit of a uh uh s d I get a little Saco vibe with it. A little |
| Andrew | SSB vibe out of it, yeah. Yeah. I |
| Everett | I was thinking speed timer-ish. Yeah. |
| Andrew | I think it's that thin tach meter bezel on it. Uh I think their aluminum also um it's it's certainly reminiscent of like racing chronographs. Like not just a chronograph, but it's reminiscent of that kind of like Seiko era of racing chronographs. |
| Everett | Yeah, no, clearly this is a yeah. Clearly a racing chronograph. Uh I I like these. These are they I think they did a really good job on these. Um I could |
| Andrew | do without the pink. That one that one doesn't do it for me. The pistachio doesn't do it for me. |
| Everett | Yeah, w The white does. Uh the white's great. Uh the white's great. The um the |
| Everett | black's good. Uh I uh I think as I often |
| Andrew | So is the blue the I |
| Everett | I think as I often do uh |
| Everett | with Christopher Ward, I I'm not sure they've |
| Everett | released the color version of this that I like. |
| Andrew | What do you want it in? I don't know. Oh, you're not right. yeah. I |
| Everett | don't know. The itch isn't scratched. Yeah, the itch hasn't been scratched. Yeah. which has been the case for me often. You know, I I felt that way with all with the twelves. Um I felt |
| Everett | that way with the thin twelves. I don't remember what they call those, but |
| Andrew | Oh what were they? I put one of those on. Man, it was just crazy good. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah. It does seem |
| Everett | to be a recurring theme with me and Christopher |
| Everett | War where I and normally I'm like a |
| Everett | black on black. Yeah, let's do it. And |
| Everett | this is obviously a good watch. If I was gonna get one of these, that's the one I would probably get. Um but maybe if they drop some |
| Andrew | black accent or some red accents on it. |
| Everett | Nah I hate that. No. That always feels super cheap to |
| Everett | me. No, I'm not sure. I I I'm not sure. And I I I won't try to like say, oh, if it was just this, I'd like it better. I I actually I will. Uh this |
| Everett | needs a really, really dark midnight |
| Everett | blue. I think that's that would be the one for me. |
| Andrew | Oh, no, not for me. or like Do you think possibly your your distaste for the black is that they have it in this uh article on the teal rubber strap. |
| Everett | No, because I'm on a bracelet right now. Okay. |
| Andrew | I'm looking at it on a bracelet right now. This is a |
| Everett | it's a matte ceramic bezel, is that |
| Everett | right? Oh, I have to look. Yeah, I |
| Andrew | think I think that ceramic would make sense. Yeah, I |
| Everett | think it's a matte ceramic. But I thought it was aluminum. No, |
| Everett | and of course it this looks great. I won't even criticize anymore. But they're they're not scratching the color edge for me. So um man, Andrew, a |
| Everett | watch that caught me off guard. |
| Everett | Actually, no, I'll come back to that. I'll come back |
| Everett | to that. Uh because I |
| Everett | want to talk about uh you know, we we've said a lot of good things about Christopher Ward today. And in the last year, year and a half, we've said a lot of good things about Yemma. But |
| Everett | Yemma continues for me, continues to be the brand |
| Everett | that I'm just you say Christopher Ward can do no wrong. I think |
| Everett | Yemma can do no wrong. |
| Everett | Every time Yemma releases a watch, I'm like, you guys, |
| Andrew | you nailed it, and I'm here for it, |
| Everett | and I'm really proud of you. I'm really proud of you, Yemma. Um another brand like Christopher |
| Everett | Ward that's been sort of moving up |
| Everett | the ladder for w watch prices, uh do in large part because of, like Christopher |
| Everett | Ward, their in-house movement development. |
| Everett | Well Christopher Ward's not doing in-house movements. Well sure they are. Not |
| Andrew | the same grade, not the same scale. It's |
| Everett | different. Right. It it's different. Y Yememmama's CMM movements are uh you know some of |
| Andrew | the coolest in the industry. I'm not qualified |
| Everett | to say, you know, mechanically speaking, blah blah blah. I'm not qualified, and so I won't. With that said, as a casual consumer |
| Everett | of watch media, uh |
| Andrew | they they it seems to me like |
| Everett | uh Yama's really done a cool thing with these CMM movements. So they've released Superman, probably their flagship watch. They've released a version of the Superman now where they have um and that's their bezel lock system. Uh where they've introduced uh kind of subtle changes, but they're |
| Everett | really good. So we get a we |
| Everett | get a new steel blue dial, |
| Everett | and it's fantastic. It's like a sunburst dark midnight. We were just talking about dark midnight. |
| Everett | And instead of their |
| Everett | like standard printed mixed |
| Everett | markers, this has a |
| Everett | like 70s style square luminous baton uh uh uh marker all the way around all the way around and it it does something. it does something to the watch. So it this is just this is just a superman. But those square markers do something in my mind to this watch that just takes it to the next level. Yes. It is retro without being without being silly. It is just gorgeous. This is a gorgeous watch. I saw it and I was like, whoa, what is that? And because of how reflective and how deep the color on the dial is, it in pictures, this thing looks like |
| Andrew | it could be every color of the blue, |
| Everett | totally different from phototograph to photograph. So spec wise, we've got a um just a regular Superman here with Yemma's in-house CMM 1.0, 4 hertz, 70 hours of power reserve, minus 3 to plus 5 seconds per day is the rating on that movement. Uh, and it's a very thin movement, which allows them to get this thing down to 10.3. So 39 millimeters wide, 10.3 thick, 47mm lug to lug, which is a fantastic, by the way. That's 10.3. That's 10.3 without the crystal |
| Andrew | without the crystal. So it does |
| Everett | come up to like 11 with the crystal, I think. And 300 meters of water resistance with Yemma's bezel lock system. This is a really, really |
| Everett | cool watch. Um and |
| Everett | and with that movement, you're getting in-house. This thing's coming in at $1,890 on rubber or $1,999 on the bracelet, which is |
| Everett | freaking nuts for what |
| Everett | you're getting. You don't get into in-house |
| Andrew | movements for under $2,000. Yeah, I mean |
| Everett | gnomos, gnomos. But you're |
| Andrew | you're sitting right at $2,000 with gnomos. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh this |
| Andrew | is this is insane. This color is great. Everything about this watch screams like James Bond. Like Sean Connery, James Bond to me. |
| Everett | I would never have come up with that, but I |
| Andrew | it's techie and I find no fault with |
| Everett | that description. But without any |
| Andrew | of the it's it's refined but still very sleek, very felt. The thinness on a 300 meter dive watch is like next to impossible. |
| Everett | Yeah. We just don't see that kind of |
| Andrew | that that Y axis on 300 meter dive watches. |
| Everett | Yeah. Regular production model. So if you like it. If you like it, |
| Everett | y y you can get it. |
| Andrew | I do like it. I do in fact like it. |
| Everett | Try it. You might like it. Same price as the rest of the Supermans, right? So basically this is just a Superman. Uh What's next, Andrew? |
| Andrew | Okay, for me. Uh we have some Studio Underdog collaborations that I want to or uh some studio underdog just releases. Uh so first is the collaboration with Ahmed Sadiqi, uh Chan Thriad, Kingfish, limited edition. Uh This is a fell |
| Everett | tell me more. So |
| Andrew | it is inspired by the UAE's most prized game fish, which is the kingfish. Uh it is a kind of a how would you describe this color? I think I'm gonna go like a gray blue with like blotching on the edges. Basically so this Yeah, |
| Everett | blotchy, that's what I would say. blotchy on the edges. |
| Andrew | Daps, uh dabs, dips, dots of dark colour. Uh and then a a really lovely rose kind of salmon and a little bit slightly darker, almost like coral orange ring on the outside of the dial with a similar rose and color matched sub-dials at your three and nine respectively. Eastern Arabic numerals on all of your subdials and the dial itself. This thing is I I think one of my favorite colors that Studio Underdog has done. So there uh there's only twenty or excuse me, only a hundred pieces of them are gonna get made. Um they were they were available exclusively from Ahmed Siddiqui, uh, and they were only 2600 bucks. Yeah, |
| Everett | no, no, it's a hey, look, it would this be a dial that I designed? No, absolutely not, but |
| Andrew | for a UAE-based collaboration with the studio underdog signatures. This is my favorite. I think one of my favorite color combinations. It's |
| Everett | a hundred pieces. I I I wish there was more saturation in the dial, but yeah, I mean whatever. Like this is such a |
| Everett | this is nothing to say about it. Comes on a mesh |
| Andrew | bracelet or on this uh kind of textured leather strap. |
| Everett | And I don't know how studio underdogs how good their mesh is, but I'm sure it's good. |
| Andrew | I I wonder where diminishing return is on mesh too. |
| Everett | Well I'll tell you I've got my stibe and it's the nicest thing. I think I think it's |
| Everett | above what most people have i in mesh. I I think that |
| Andrew | probably um the mesh coming in |
| Everett | at two hundred to $300 is worth it. You know, Omega is is selling their mesh for way more than that. The point of diminishing returns is below that. |
| Andrew | it's on the the stamp on the buckle. |
| Everett | but what you're paying for with Omega is OEM and blah blah blah. Even though Steve is making them probably. Um but yeah, |
| Everett | I I uh that stibe that stibe |
| Everett | mesh that I have is just freaking nuts. |
| Everett | Uh so uh yeah, |
| Everett | I I I don't I don't think this is a stibe quality. Maybe I doubt |
| Andrew | it's unlikely for cause these are what 20 what I say, 2600 bucks for only a hundred of them. And it's it's everything Studio Underdog with the infusion of this UAE uh Ahmed CD key. |
| Everett | And what about this new O2 series? |
| Andrew | Oh, yeah. The Studio Underdog O2. So the O2, uh we just talked about an O one or an O3, excuse me, right? An O3? Yeah, the O3 chronograph. Bicompact single pusher. This new O1 or O2 series is the Mantis. Their first limited edition Gen 2. |
| Everett | It's pink. It is. |
| Andrew | It is uh it's actually that blue that uh you know mantis is from uh guardians of the galaxy. No, this is a full loomed green dial that is just terrific. And that's all. It's an O2 three-hander, all the same studio underdog that you know, with a full loom dial, and it looks great. |
| Everett | Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. No, |
| Everett | this is this is great. This definitely feels |
| Everett | when I saw this, I was like, have we not ever |
| Everett | seen this before? Because it feels like |
| Everett | a like a mojito or something that |
| Everett | m Studio Underdog must have released before, |
| Everett | but the kicker is that full loon, right? |
| Andrew | Because he did do a mojito not that long ago and it was similarly colored, but it's it's not full loomed. One thing that I'm interested in, so this they're 1200 bucks, limited to production, uh, they have a nine hour order window. With uh on this article, there's no date. Uh so we we may have missed it. Um but what I'm interested in is um Studio Underdog obtained uh exclusive rights to Seagull and is dropping a lot of watches with Salita movements. |
| Everett | Oh well I mean I think that this is like that's for their chronographs. This is this is the three-hander. I think they've always used Solita for their three hand stuff. So I I Siegel is not, as far as I know, not making any all that compelling three-handers when there's |
| Everett | options from Selita available. |
| Everett | So I I I mean I m that makes sense to me. |
| Andrew | Uh this Ahmed Sadiqi is a Salita five ten. |
| Everett | Oh interesting. Yeah. I I I I hadn't |
| Everett | seen that. Well it it is a uh it is a |
| Andrew | but I'm I'm I'm pontificating, pondering, waxing poetic on my wonderings and musings. |
| Everett | We're at forty-three minutes, Andrew. Oh, |
| Andrew | we're at forty-three minutes., which is fine Which |
| Everett | is fine. Actually, we're probably at 41 minutes. |
| Everett | Uh-ish. If |
| Everett | you're watching at home and you're like, they're not at 43 minutes. |
| Everett | Uh it's because we had to cut out. Andrew said some |
| Everett | really terrible stuff and I'm probably gonna cut it out. It should |
| Andrew | not ever be repeated. Uh |
| Everett | but there are two watches I know I really want to talk about. Do you have any uh what where where are |
| Everett | you at? I'm gonna |
| Andrew | do something wild this week. |
| Everett | No. I'm not going to close |
| Andrew | the links. Oh my gosh. I'm going to hold on to them for next week. So we can do your two. |
| Everett | Oh, okay. So the first one I want to talk about is Panorai. Panorai. |
| Everett | Panorai, Panorai, Panorai. A couple A |
| Everett | couple of years ago, Panorai released You |
| Andrew | know quarterly I sign you and Will up for their newsletter? |
| Everett | uh A couple of years ago, Panorai released a um I I think it was a |
| Everett | 40 millimeter watch or a 41 millimeter watch. Anyway, |
| Andrew | it was appropriately sized, I recall. they released |
| Everett | a watch that was like, oh, this is not |
| Everett | huge. This is not huge. Uh |
| Everett | and then they gave it fifty meters of water resistance. |
| Everett | And everybody was like, Gotcha, bitch. |
| Everett | Like what uh Panorai, |
| Everett | have you have you paid any attention to uh anyway, |
| Andrew | what people like about you? and |
| Everett | then they do, I mean they just release a lot of weird what like |
| Everett | that's neat. I'm not paying $1,000. I don't know |
| Everett | who is someone paying $5 grand for that fucking thing and it's not me. |
| Everett | Uh so uh panorai, I love the idea of Panorai. |
| Everett | I I love I |
| Everett | saw there's a there's a fellow who uh |
| Everett | has a number of times sat in front of |
| Everett | me at the football games. I don't think he's the season ticket holder, but he has he has been in that seat often. So you must have a relationship with the season ticket holder at the Oregon football games. And |
| Everett | he has a 1993 |
| Everett | or thereabouts Luminar on 44 millimeter on a rubber strap. Like dope. It's |
| Everett | dope. It is. Is it is it a manufacturer |
| Andrew | rubber strap? So it's got the panoright logo in it.alia Yes. Yes. Y,es |
| Everett | yes Y,es. yes, And it's a perfect watch. I asked him about it once and he was like, my kids got it for me. Uh and I was like, okay, he don't want A, you don't want to talk about it, and B, you don't have anything to say about it. It's awesome though. |
| Andrew | What are your kids doing that they got you a panorama? |
| Everett | I I don't know. Does he need |
| Andrew | more kids? Yeah. |
| Everett | I I don't know. Yeah. can can I be can I be |
| Andrew | offering myself up to to be to be one of his kids so that I can join the family business or whatever. |
| Everett | Panorai has finally, has finally, finally, finally finally decided they were like, you |
| Everett | know what, let's let's make watches. Let's make watches for the folks that |
| Everett | want a panor eye that's actually a panor eye, but that don't want a 44 for sure a 47 millimeter case. |
| Everett | They released a 42 millimeter, 13.8 thick, which sounds |
| Everett | like a lot, but we'll come back to that. But we're at a 42mm |
| Andrew | watch. 138ths of proportionate. |
| Everett | Fully stacked luminar with 500 meters of water resistance. |
| Andrew | There it is. Now you're |
| Everett | not gonna get a sandwich dial. It is a printed dial. |
| Andrew | It's a printed dial, which uh oh okay. |
| Everett | okay. Um, but it is otherwise. |
| Everett | It is otherwise, I think, perfect. |
| Everett | 13.8, but we've got a heavily |
| Everett | domed crystal, so that's gonna be that's gonna be |
| Everett | something. We've got this perfect slow |
| Everett | bezel uh the flanks are you know really high and tight like they're supposed to be um uh uh yeah we've got we we've got Swiss Luminova uh on the dial. In-house is there |
| Andrew | not tritium on any of these? P980, |
| Everett | no, no tritium. Um which is a four hertz 72 hour movement. pan ray always does good power reserves. Um uh uh and we've got you know these coming in on color match canvas. Um |
| Everett | yeah, this is good. And Andrew and Andrew |
| Everett | 6500 or 7500 euro for the DLC. |
| Andrew | Oh. So we have something reasonably priced. |
| Everett | We do. And appropriately sized |
| Andrew | for for what this is. Yeah. |
| Everett | That's right. That's right. I I mean this is just like uh uh uh uh for the second time tonight I'm just gonna say no notes. Panorai. |
| Andrew | No, colors are right. S I mean, where where have you been? |
| Everett | I'm sure Panorai is feeling squeezed. You know, everybody knows watch sales are down. Um, some watch sales are down, costs are up, etc. I'm sure someone at Panorai was like, Can we please, for the love of God, make a watch that someone will buy? I gotta imagine this is it. |
| Andrew | It is still big. they size it well. the ergonomics of it make it wear very comfortable for a 44. |
| Everett | That's right but it's it's still a still a big |
| Andrew | bitch. That's a big bitch. And |
| Everett | this a 42 millimeter is |
| Everett | this still going to be a big watch. But I think |
| Everett | those two millimeters are gonna make |
| Everett | a huge difference. Yes. I think it it and I love |
| Everett | that it's a luminar with |
| Everett | no sacrifice. Uh as |
| Everett | long as you don't as long as you don't consider the sandwich dial uh a a an absolute must. And maybe some some people do, for frankly. Does |
| Everett | it have to be? Yeah. I I don't |
| Everett | know. I I think that's like getting a waveless |
| Andrew | seamaster. Yeah, I think it's not for me. |
| Everett | I don't believe it dial. I I think this is |
| Everett | just a terrific watch. It doesn't feel |
| Everett | dumbed down, doesn't feel neutered in |
| Andrew | any way. It really just feels |
| Everett | like an excellent, fully spec panorai that is gonna be more wearable and gosh I gotta tell you I |
| Everett | think I'm here for it this is such a cool this is |
| Everett | such a cool watch I I'm really excited about this. If |
| Everett | these come on the secondary market |
| Everett | for under five grand, I gotta tell ya, there's a world in which I'm |
| Everett | rocking a panorai i i in |
| Everett | fairly short order. Um I |
| Andrew | mean uh I would |
| Everett | wear one of these. No, none of |
| Everett | them come on rubber, which they're all come on canvas. I'm not wild about canvas. I'm not wild about textile straps. Um uh on rubber, |
| Everett | uh uh well I I would want this on rubber. So hopefully |
| Andrew | we see rubber uh is the lug width the same as the |
| Everett | nah it can't be. It doesn't look |
| Andrew | like it is. It can't be. Yeah. That would be too clever. |
| Everett | In fact, I don't see I |
| Everett | don't see a lug width. You know, I I think the standard 44 is a 24 millimeter lug width. I I think that this is probably 22, if I had to guess. Um, so you're not gonna be able to just plug and play. maybe I don't I I |
| Everett | don't think so though. So um |
| Andrew | yeah, too clever. That |
| Everett | is uh that is a watch that that I saw announced and I was like, shit. Okay, Panorai. Um |
| Andrew | I see what you're doing here. Okay. |
| Everett | Okay, you've you've decided not to release a dumb watch. Thanks. The |
| Everett | other watch, this one surprised me. This one surprised me because it's a brand that I don't |
| Everett | hate, I don't dislike even. Uh but is never I'm |
| Everett | I'm not like I've never been like, oh my gosh. And |
| Everett | this watch, I'm like, oh |
| Everett | my gosh. Heron. Heron watches. Uh there are a Canadian company out of Montreal. For sure. This is a microRAM. This is a microRAM. Uh officially, I think, to the extent that's even possible. Last year they released a GMT. I thought, meh. |
| Andrew | I looked at these two, yeah. They |
| Everett | have just released uh |
| Everett | a watch that they're saying it is an homage |
| Everett | to the great age of exploration. |
| Everett | That's all in quotes. The great age |
| Everett | of exploration. Isn't that now? We're |
| Andrew | about to go back to the moon. And |
| Everett | of course, that takes us back to you know those that post-World War II period, right? |
| Everett | Really uh that period sort of before the cold war had |
| Everett | set in where you know |
| Everett | America was really focused on |
| Everett | making babies and |
| Everett | and going higher and deeper and further |
| Everett | out into the rough. Okay. So |
| Everett | you know, we're we're looking at |
| Everett | this period where these these folks are coming |
| Everett | back and they're making watches. And so we as we've talked about on the show a lot |
| Everett | of times, watches were had |
| Everett | this like sidecar |
| Everett | seat for the trip to |
| Everett | the moon and the top of Everest and and all these |
| Andrew | were a part of an important part of the story because they were still such crucial pieces of of equipment. |
| Everett | Right. We've got Rolex and Doxa sort of funding Jacques Cousteau. Okay, so this is an homage back to that period uh okay and they say hey the rolex explorer the pole router the launching conquest are all part of our inspiration but this watch doesn't look to me like any of those. you wouldn't look at this watch and say, oh, this is a pull router or or |
| Everett | uh or or an explorer. |
| Everett | However this is a watch that fits in |
| Andrew | that conversation. It fits in that conversation. |
| Everett | uh spec-wise, it's a 37 millimeter watch that's 11 millimeters tall, which is great. 43 millimeter lug-to-lug, which means this watch is gonna be |
| Everett | super duper wearable. I'm |
| Everett | gonna call this a barrel case, Andrew. Yeah. |
| Everett | A tonne case. I was trying to decide. |
| Andrew | I I was kind of w waffling between Tono or barrel. I think I like Tono better. |
| Everett | But isn't Tano barrel? Isn't it French for |
| Everett | barrel? Uh |
| Everett | yeah. Really |
| Everett | minimal really mineral |
| Everett | uh minimal uh branding. |
| Everett | We've just got the a fairly subtle |
| Everett | Heron logo. Good fonts. Good fonts. This is a |
| Everett | sandwich dial. This is they actually took the sandwich dials |
| Everett | that Panoret was gonna use on their new watch. They got |
| Andrew | stuck in customs and Panorite didn't have them, so they had to print them. |
| Everett | Miyota 9039, which everybody everybody who knows who listens to this show knows I'm a huge fan |
| Everett | of. Great beads of rice bracelet, |
| Everett | uh female beads of rice |
| Everett | bracelet, uh, which means it's gonna drape |
| Everett | really well. it just looks excellent. |
| Everett | It looks excellent. And |
| Everett | it is Here's the best part. And |
| Everett | it is $630. |
| Andrew | Is it is that US money or Canadian money? You |
| Everett | tell me, but I think US money. Um |
| Everett | let's see. oh, so these say sold out, but I think they haven't gone up for sale yet. Is that right? |
| Andrew | I don't know. I'm pretty |
| Everett | sure I'm pretty |
| Everett | sure a launch date on this in this |
| Andrew | article. There isn't. If |
| Everett | you go to the Heron website, these are all if you go to the Heron website, these all say sold out, but I I think that's because they're not actually for sale. Terra free for US customers, six hundred and thirty bucks. Yeah. |
| Everett | How about that? Yeah. Oh, so pre order pre order |
| Everett | today. I don't |
| Everett | see how you do that, but they're they're not for sale |
| Everett | yet. So I I I think these |
| Everett | will be for sale soonish. |
| Andrew | And uh just based on the spec sheet and the price of this watch, they're gonna sell out. |
| Everett | Yeah. This will be uh this'll be a fast |
| Andrew | sell. Yeah. I I I think that's |
| Everett | right. It I I love this watch. |
| Everett | I I think it's great. I think that they've done really cool things with the really cool things with the way they've marketed them with the fonts. Uh colors are great. Each one of these dials has sort of a fun, like the black has a orange, and the each one of them has its own fun twists. The blue |
| Everett | is just a really straightforward blue. The rotor on this, have you seen the rotor on this thing? It's got like a snowflake pattern. |
| Everett | Where? I haven't seen the rotor picture. |
| Andrew | So if you go to the website, if you go to the Heron |
| Everett | website and flick through, |
| Everett | um like select one of the watches and |
| Everett | flick through. It's got like a snowflake |
| Everett | on the rotor. Anyway, |
| Everett | uh you know, we don't see a whole lot of you know |
| Andrew | yeah sub thousand dollar watches |
| Everett | these days that is really like |
| Andrew | nailed it. I'm doing my own thing. |
| Everett | I'm a watch, but I'm not like those watches. You |
| Andrew | know, you see Albishorn who's doing a similar thing, but so much of there's a storytelling much more expensive. Way more |
| Everett | expensive. Alba Short's making a hell of a watch, right? |
| Andrew | yeah. Charting their own path. |
| Everett | Andrew, that is that is exactly the comp that popped into my head when I was looking at this thing. Not because it's similar, like they're not |
| Everett | really doing a different thing, but it was like, |
| Everett | yeah, here here's a watch that's doing its own |
| Everett | thing. Right. And fits within the story |
| Andrew | it's telling. And 630 |
| Everett | bucks. Six hundred and thirty bucks. Yeah, |
| Andrew | that's a win. Really cool watch. |
| Everett | and of course six hundred and thirty bucks, you know, there's gonna be sacrifices in terms of finishing and blah blah blah it's not gonna be finished like a two thousand dollar watch, probably. Probably |
| Andrew | no, and it's using a ninety thirty nine. Yeah. Right? you're those are the realities of producing a watch at that price point. |
| Everett | Yeah. It it's great. I I mean really really, |
| Everett | terrific. I I love it. I'm I'm proud of it. I'm proud of Heron. |
| Andrew | We need to go Heron. And Heron's uh |
| Everett | y you know, now on my now on my |
| Everett | on my good list. Maybe we'll have to go to Montreal |
| Andrew | for some uh poutine and Andrew, |
| Everett | uh assuming there are no other watches you want to talk about, I would |
| Everett | invite you i if there's anything else, |
| Everett | if there's any other things to talk |
| Everett | about, uh to do do so now. What you got? |
| Andrew | Oh, I have another thing. So I as we discussed earlier, I had to take two transatlantic flights, um, which is no short flight. Uh |
| Everett | yeah, they're long. my f first |
| Andrew | one was really unpleasant. Um I got uh like violent heartburn. So it was a true red eye. Um but I got like violent head heartburn. And |
| Everett | no tough? It It did didnn't't |
| Andrew | solve the problem. Ooh. So I was like just sitting there begging to be able to go to sleep. I was sitting next to a a passenger of size. Um Who was seated next to her partner and she leaned over on his shoulder to fall asleep. But as one does when you're sleeping, you start jockeying for more room. So she's like pushing her hips further and further into me. |
| Everett | Sure. And using like him for leverage. |
| Andrew | So there's no way I can resist this like conquest into my seat. Um, so I have heartburn. I'm I'm losing real estate, and this woman has sleep apnea. |
| Everett | Oh god. So it's like scary. |
| Andrew | There were times where I was like, I should wake her, like, for safety. Ah. There were a lot of other noises on the plane. But one of the things that that made it that when I was able to finally like, clear the heartburn, tolerate the fact that I was getting snuggled. Um, I bought a pair of JBL 770 noise canceling headphones for like just specifically for this trip. Uh, because AirPods do a great job for noise canceling in like low ambient noise environments, like the office, the house, the gym. Uh, but they also don't have a great battery life. |
| Everett | no, especially if you use a noise canceling. It's |
| Everett | transatlantic flight is a tough tough. |
| Andrew | Four hours on for airpods like that. It's not gonna happen. So these say they have a uh battery life of up to 70 hours. Uh and I figured noise canceling is gonna pull it down to 35, which is like 3x what I need it to be. |
| Everett | So I got 'em. I put them on, |
| Andrew | turned them on, and I was like, oh, this isn't super noise canceling. There's another button. You push active noise canceling on, and the world disappears. The only sound that was able to cut through these headphones without anything playing through them, just the headphones over my ears was this woman's sleep apnea. Uh once I got to sleep, I got to sleep. But um, these headphones were fantastic. I started wearing them in lieu of my AirPods. Um the Bluetooth range on them is great. I leave my phone like plugged in and wander around the house and just do my thing and hear nothing except what's playing through my headphones. Man, it's fantastic. These are the JBL website says they're all sold out right now. |
| Everett | I'm sure you can get them. I I got them at |
| Andrew | the Walmart for like 120 bucks. yeah. Uh they're fantastic if you're in the market for some headphones and they're really comfortable to wear. I didn't need ear sweat. Um, like they're just big enough that they're not putting any pressure on my ears. Like they truly go over the ear. Um if you're in the market, I man, I I love these. |
| Everett | Love it. That's a good one. Yeah, it's a good |
| Everett | one. Uh I and and I do I rock |
| Everett | my air my AirPods and when we flew to Ireland, I rocked AirPods. |
| Everett | Uh and I like 'em. I like the form factor, but you're |
| Everett | you're right. A the i i you |
| Everett | know, an anatomy uh uh |
| Everett | the size of the of the little pluggy thingy is, you know, i it's |
| Everett | not a perfect system, right? Over ear or on ear even is gonna be a more better system. But w battery was a problem, right? |
| Andrew | Mm-hmm like four hours into the flight, I'm like, |
| Everett | okay, I gotta like take one of these off and plug it in. Like I'm watching a movie. And |
| Andrew | in your in each ear, yeah. and they charge |
| Everett | back up really fast. So even if you just take a break, um they charge back up pretty quick. It w which is what I wound up doing. But um yeah, it it's it it it is a thing. Yeah, it is a thing. So good good one. |
| Andrew | Highly recommend for uh those l longer flights. |
| Everett | Uh I've got another thing. Do me. |
| Everett | So I have in |
| Everett | the last like, I don't know, year, I uh maybe even let's say a year ago I decided that I wanted a like 80s Sierra Designs Mountain Parka. Now |
| Everett | i i if you don't know Sierra Designs California company |
| Everett | sold a very, very famous jacket i in the late seventies, early eighties called the Mountain Parka, and even beyond that. |
| Everett | And they're somewhat ubiquitous in sort of |
| Everett | like men's fashion circles. They're like, |
| Everett | you know, really kind of OG Gorb Corp. |
| Everett | And you you know when when you enter into one of |
| Everett | these into one of these expeditions, |
| Everett | you or at least I wind up reading a lot of articles and yada yada yada. And as I'm like adding things to my cart, like okay, that's interesting, my eBay cart, I'm like |
| Everett | looking for a really good example |
| Everett | of this Sierra Design. |
| Everett | And you know, Sierra Design sold a billion of these, so they come in a |
| Everett | lot of different colors. I find |
| Everett | this article that references |
| Everett | the idea that Sierra |
| Everett | Designs had actually |
| Everett | taken the mountain parka from another |
| Everett | company, specifically a |
| Everett | company called Holybar, which is a |
| Everett | boulder company, uh, Boulder Colorado company, and and and one of the employees, one of the employees from this boulder company, Holy Bar, which if you haven't heard of it, don't feel bad, um, had moved to California, started |
| Everett | CR Design. Nobody had heard |
| Andrew | of it. So I'm like, |
| Everett | I'm like, well, wait, what's this? And so I start looking into it. Holy bar is one of so Kelti, there's a few other companies in |
| Everett | Boulder in the 60s and 70s, |
| Everett | who are really, really, this is pre-Gore-Tex, and these companies are really |
| Everett | leading the world in camping gear, |
| Everett | backpacking gear, mountaineering gear, right uh and and there's weird and and there's these three companies that |
| Everett | are sort of Hollybar, Kelty and |
| Everett | I'm blanking on the third one, Jerry, I think. And these companies are like |
| Everett | really cool. They're just really cool. |
| Everett | But you know, as as time goes on, you know, things get relegated and pushed in other directions. Hollybar is uh |
| Everett | made really, really famous. |
| Everett | They hit mainstream in 1968 when Robert |
| Everett | De Niro wears an orange Hollyabar mountain parka in the Deer Hunter. You ever seen the Deer |
| Andrew | Hunter? You know exactly the jacket. Yes. |
| Everett | And so like I'm reading this, I'm |
| Everett | reading this article, and then I'm Googling Hollybar, and then I'm reading about Holy Bar. |
| Andrew | Holy bar still exists in a different form. They do canvas tents, right? They do expedition wall tents now, don't they? |
| Everett | No No.. I'll come back to that. |
| Everett | And so I uh like I'm |
| Everett | instantly I'm |
| Everett | instantly like transformed |
| Everett | here. I'm like, okay, well, no longer am I |
| Everett | looking for a good conditioned Sierra Designs |
| Everett | mountain parka? Rather, I'm looking for a Hollybar mountain parka. I'll just tell |
| Everett | you, Andrew, much, much, much, much easier |
| Everett | to find a good condition Sierra Designs |
| Everett | Mount Parka than it is to find Holly Bar. |
| Everett | But my mind being what it is, mostly stupid, |
| Everett | uh decided, okay, well, this is what I have to have. Andrew. Why |
| Andrew | didn't you just buy this Asian version for like 80 the bucks? |
| Everett | Andrew. I found |
| Everett | it. I found it. |
| Everett | It's on eBay. It's my size. I order it. It comes in. It's got a a couple little, |
| Everett | a couple little fabric damagey things |
| Everett | on one of the sleeves. It's perfect. |
| Everett | It is perfect. I |
| Everett | have my for the |
| Everett | last year this piece I've been looking for. |
| Everett | It came in and I love |
| Everett | it. Did it come in in time for you to take |
| Andrew | it to It did. It came |
| Everett | in two days before we left for Ireland. So this thing traveled with |
| Everett | me around Ireland and Scotland, and it was rainy the whole time we were there. Yeah, |
| Andrew | the weather turned uh like two days before I left. |
| Everett | I will say it is a it's not a sixty forty few fabric. I think it's a sixty-five thirty-five fabric that was in-house for Hollyobar. Um and it's a it is you know, literally a fifty year old jacket at this point. So it um it i i i it needs to be sprayed. Let's just let's put it that way. For |
| Andrew | odor or waterproofing? For waterproofing. |
| Everett | it it definitely uh doesn't keep you totally dry, but it's a good temperature, it's lightweight. |
| Everett | uh and and uh and I'll I'll pull it out so |
| Everett | you can look at it, Andrew. But um it it |
| Everett | was the that's my other thing really for the week. Uh a little bit more legend on Hollybar. So |
| Andrew | what was the company that you sent that is still that used to do expedition gear but is now just doing tents? |
| Everett | I'm blanking. We'll come oh oh we'll |
| Andrew | we'll find 'cause I recall |
| Everett | Oregon Company. Yeah. So Oh but |
| Andrew | they did they did it was a toolbox that you were looking for from them, yeah. |
| Everett | Or a role or something like that. Yeah, that that's right. I'll I'll I'll I'll I c I know where to find that. |
| Everett | So uh we'll update we'll come back with that next week. Hollybar uh winds |
| Everett | up so at the time Hollybar is sort of slowing down, they get bought bought by Johnson |
| Everett | Wax, and for whatever reason, Johnson Wax mega company just kind of |
| Everett | struggles to keep them going. |
| Everett | Um, and so they're slowing down, and at the time they're slowing |
| Everett | down, Johnson Wax is got them on the market. Now, Holy Bar, because of their relationship with the other outdoor companies and retailers in the in Colorado and in California, Hollybar is got a great distribution network. There's |
| Everett | this little company. There's this little company called the North |
| Everett | Face. And the North Face is |
| Everett | a super modern company. They're forward-looking. They've adopted at this point Gore-Tex integration into all their stuff. They're struggling with distribution. And so North Face goes to Johnson Wax and says, we want to |
| Everett | buy Hollybar. We think you want |
| Everett | to sell them. And Johnson Wax is like, |
| Everett | heck yeah, please. |
| Everett | Northface buys Hollybar, |
| Everett | decides it's not worth trying to save the company. They really just wanted the distribution |
| Everett | network. And effectively, |
| Everett | effectively, Northface by way of |
| Everett | Holly Bar's distribution network becomes the biggest outdoor |
| Everett | equipment company in the world almost overnight. So that is the legend of Holly |
| Everett | Bar. If you it I think |
| Everett | it's kind of fun, right? 'Cause nobody really no, you mentioned earlier you can still buy |
| Everett | Holly Bar. There have been some revival |
| Everett | attempts at Holly Bar. That IP has |
| Everett | been sold a few times. And in fact, I think that there's a company in Europe right now called Holly Bar? |
| Andrew | Uh it's in uh Japan, I think. It |
| Everett | is not the SEC. Is it the price |
| Andrew | was like four hundred thousand of a symbol of a symbol that I don't I'm not familiar with, but based on exchange rates, I think it was probably yen. |
| Everett | don't expect don't expect that there's any similarity between the products being sold by that company and vintage olivar. Uh it is a company that's well and |
| Everett | truly dead. However, I got my |
| Everett | vintage piece and it's w it makes |
| Everett | me so so so happy. It's the same |
| Everett | color that Robert it's the rust color |
| Everett | that Robert De Niro wears in Deer Hunter. It's perfect. |
| Andrew | It's a good jacket. It's perfect. Uh |
| Everett | and I didn't even pay that much for it. I paid like I think 120 bucks for it. |
| Andrew | That might have been what you paid for it new. It |
| Everett | yeah, back in nineteen seventy two or |
| Everett | whatever. So um Yeah, |
| Andrew | I mean high high end mountaineering gear in the 70s, like I might have been an 80 dollar jacket. |
| Everett | Yeah, maybe. Yeah. You're not wrong about that. Andrew, uh here we are. Is there anything you want to add? |
