Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like.
Unknown Everett, how are you?
Everett I'm terrific. I slept in this morning. My apologies to you, Andrew. We're starting about a half hour late than we normally would. You know, I had one of those days yesterday. So yesterday was Ducks football opening weekend, home opening weekend as the season ticket holder. That's an event I look forward to.
Andrew Thanks for the invite. Really appreciate it.
Everett Yeah.
Andrew Andrew was working, so he's being. I also wasn't invited. Not even the courtesy invite where it's like, hey, I know you're working, but if you wanted to come, you're not invited because I'm busy.
Everett Let's just be clear. I've invited Andrew to many football games in the past, and he doesn't go because he likes to watch them from home if possible.
Andrew No, because I've always worked on Saturdays. This is the first year in many that I don't work on Saturdays anymore.
Everett The football games are fun, but it's an event, right? You can't really get to the stadium in a vehicle. And if you can get to the stadium in a vehicle, your day is like a nine-hour day. Right.
Andrew I think because the people who have the answer, they get there like right as soon as the gate opens for tailgating, they park, they tailgate all morning, they go to the game, they leave the game and then they tailgate in the evening. They like grill. They like they just chill because.
Everett Yeah, so that's what I was getting at, right? There's no way to get to the stadium, right? And the only way to get to the stadium is to do what Andrew said, right? You go early, you tailgate, and then you have to, like, you can't just leave the stadium after the game. If you've parked there to tailgate, it is literally about two, you know, anywhere from an hour to two hours before you can be away from traffic at that time.
Andrew That's best case scenario.
Everett And so that's like eight or nine hours total minimum, right, if you go to the stadium. So most people who are not going to do that, what they do is they park somewhere far enough away from the stadium and then walk or shuttle in. And there are a few good options for that. The way my family does it is we park at a friend's house and then walk. It's about a mile and a half via a beautiful... canoe canal it's a really fun walk but it's it's about a mile and a half and it takes about a half hour so football game for us is like a six hour event right because you've got four hours of game you know you want to get there about an hour early and then add an hour of transportation both ways it's about a six hour process so um you know when there's football games it's that's the thing you do that is the thing you do today so uh opening weekend i went with my daughter betty we showed up the game was terrific you know we did all the things we went to a couple tailgates we went and saw the pet band playing outside the stadium for you know 20 minutes we got some new ducks gear we saw the marching band play me at the beginning of the show we went and said hi to andrew as he was working his station we um you know saw the national anthem we saw the first roughly 20 minutes of the game in which the ducks were now up 31 to 3 when i got a text from my wife said hey we're gonna go to salem to the state fair salem is about an hour away from us And I was like, you know what? Can you pick us up on your way out? And she was like, yeah, sure. So we leave the game just before half. We do our half hour walk along the Canoe Canal. My wife is there about the same time. We hop in the Suburban or Expedition, I guess. We head up to Salem. We pay for parking and tickets along the way. And we do a day of State Fair. That's a day. That's a day. That is a day. So they're both things that are a day unto themselves.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett And we did them both. And we did all of them. I had a K-dog. I had a portion of an elephant ear.
Andrew So I was really bummed to hear that you went to the state fair to get those Korean corn dogs. I thought that that was now a booth at Autzen.
Everett Oh, no, that would have been cool.
Andrew And I'm now deeply disappointed because those things are the truth.
Everett No, it's like true State Fair food. Yeah, we got them at the State Fair. So did rides, got sick at one point, didn't get like actually sick, but felt sick. Went and looked at things that had no interest in buying, but I was like, this is funny. Yeah, did the full State Fair. I saw cows and baby pigs suckling on their fat mother. Full State Fair day. That's a day. Award-winning rabbits. I've never been to the State Fair. Oh, well, you're missing out. I am. Yeah, you've got to get up there. It's really good.
Andrew It ends this weekend, right?
Everett It ends tomorrow. Tomorrow's the last day.
Andrew We might have to go next year.
Everett Yeah, I think we're going to have back next year because it was fun. It was a good day. But I think next year we'll give ourselves.
Andrew A day for it, like leave in the morning, come home on a reasonable time.
Everett Yeah, we got home a little after midnight last night. It was just, oh my gosh. So anyway, and then I finally got to bed. I finally got to sleep, and then I slept in this morning. I had to apologize to Andrew, but that was my weekend.
Andrew I worked yesterday. I had a weird day. It was really low-key until it wasn't. Working in a traffic control environment after a sporting event is perhaps the worst environment imaginable because you're tired. Everyone around you is tired. And nobody understands why traffic sucks. Nobody. Exactly nobody understands. So just maybe a PSA out here. If you choose to go to a sporting event, you're also choosing the traffic. Don't make it suck for the people who are trying to just get by. Barring that, I woke up this morning and watched the Dutch Grand Prix, which was fantastic.
Everett Is that F1? Mm-hmm.
Andrew Yep, so I watched my NF1 race this morning. It was a killer race. Not quite a nail-biter, but definitely pins and needles through most of the race. Some big crashes, some really important safety car moves. So it was fun, and I got to watch it in relative silence. My younger son woke up before me when my alarm was set to go off at 545, so I could wake up and just like... stumble to watch the race he was already up so he just like played while we watched um f1 uh but other than that you know just chugging on along doing his thing man doing my thing yeah uh we are not here to talk about football or traffic always traffic man
Everett But we could. Rather, we're here to talk about watches. And watches we will talk about. Although, I think it bears just briefly mentioning that Ohio State beat Texas. And FSU beat Alabama.
Andrew Roll over Alabama.
Everett Oh, my gosh. We'll just leave it there. I think that's fine to say. They were 2-10 last year.
Andrew It's not a big deal.
Everett It did very briefly mentioning. Andrew, do you... I want to start with something. I just want to state for the fans at home, we generally sort of alternate back and forth. This is Andrew's watch. This is my watch. Sometimes my coach watches. But today, Andrew has done almost all of the work. And I have done... None of the work. So we're just going to talk about watches. It's not my picks and Andrew's picks. It's just Andrew's picks.
Andrew They're our picks. They were overlapping.
Everett That's true.
Andrew Because a lot of cool stuff happened this last week.
Everett It was like Geneva watch days or something?
Andrew There was just a lot of cool stuff. We've had a little bit of a drought in these last several weeks. Still cool stuff. But this last week was ripe. We're talking low-hanging fruit. from our perspective uh but before we get to that i want to mention we have our first glimpse at the listing of brands that will be available to see touch feel interact with at at wind up new york for the 10th anniversary it will again be at center 415 in manhattan have you been to center 415 no no so this will be our both of our first time last time it was at chelsea market that we were there last year was at 415 or has it been two years at 415
Everett I think this was the second year at 415, yeah.
Andrew So this will be our first time back to New York in a couple years because we are going. I don't know if we've maybe announced that before. We should have bleeped that. Hit the bleep button. Yeah, we'll just... So we're going to be at... We do have... What's the word? Tempering concrete plans to go? Yeah, no, we have. We're committed to going. We just haven't locked it in.
Everett We have hotels. We haven't yet bought airfare, but I keep coming back to the airfare thinking this is going to get better.
Andrew I get weird time of day texts with like three options that I have to select ABC from Everett.
Everett I keep thinking I'm going to wait. This is going to get better in terms of price or something. It's not getting better or worse.
Andrew It's kind of stagnant, which is maybe a good sign that it's stagnant. Uh, so anyway, we have, uh, so October 17, 18, 19 wind up will be at center four, one, five in midtown, midtown Manhattan. Uh, And here's, let me just give you a rundown of the brands that they have presented thus far, which is not comprehensive. I'm not going to talk about all of them. But we've got Accutron, Alpena, Arkan, Anordane, Aviate.
Everett Baltic? Artifact, which is a brand that I've been interested in.
Andrew Yeah.
Unknown Braymont, Brew, Christopher Ward.
Andrew It's everyone. It's everyone who is anyone will be there. Pollen's going to be there. I'm excited to see them in person. That might be my most excited to see in person. As we draw nearer, we will have to have a most excited to see in person discussion. But Pollen is certainly up there. A really, really good lineup. Showing up. And I haven't said it for 10 years.
Everett So New York is now by far the biggest windup. Well over 140 brands, 10,000 people.
Andrew There is, I think, a growing... You're also going to get foot traffic in midtown Manhattan, unlike you will anywhere else that windup shows up.
Everett There's a growing sentiment, I think, amongst sort of the people who would go to this thing in years past and perhaps even presenters who had presented this thing in years past that it's a difficult... it's a more difficult show to both be at, to visit, and to present at than it has been in years past. So I'll just note for the record, I don't see Notice on the list yet. I've talked to those guys, not sure they're going to be there. Monta's not on the list. I think Monta's got a different thing maybe going on that weekend. Astro and Bank's not on the list. So some of our old school friends are sort of...
Andrew When we talked to Andrew, he was on the fence about whether to just go or to go as a presenter. So I do expect we'll see Andrew regardless of his table.
Everett It's turned into, it's success, the success of Wind Up has perhaps turned it into a thing. that is just so much different than what it was in the early days that I think some of the brands that were sort of the hallmarks of wind up in the past have said, you know, this isn't... We're maybe going to spend our focus, our energy on things like Intersect.
Andrew A victim of its own success.
Everett Yeah, perhaps. In some ways. I mean, but look, they've got Doc's... Yeah. They've got eBay is coming. I mean, giant mouse. Yes. Everything available on eBay will be there. Hodinkee is presenting with their Hodinkee insurance. Orage is going to be there. I mean, this is a humongous thing at this point.
Andrew They've got a fourth haul. Yeah. They've expanded even from their expansion. And to comment on the foot traffic that comes by.
Everett Yeah. Venezia Nico. Sorry.
Andrew Last time we were there, this guy is just walking down the street, minding his business. And Everett does the like. Bend over at the waist and like kind of around the corner, peer at his wrist. He's like, oh, what you got on there? And the guy was so creeped out. Yeah. Because he was just a guy walking down the street in New York. He just happened to be in a place where people check out your wrists.
Everett I can't remember what he was wearing.
Andrew It was a two-tone... What the fuck?
Unknown It doesn't matter.
Andrew It was a two-tone something. It wasn't... It just was. It was just a thing. But anyway, that is exciting news. It's coming. We're... you know, a month and a half out.
Unknown That's right. That's right.
Andrew Yeah. We're, we're wind up watch fair, New York, get ready. We might get weird. Everett sleeps till 10. What's our first watch? Cause they open at noon. Uh, my first watch for the day. Um, Hmm. Oh, I kinda, this isn't a throwaway watch by any means, but, Whenever we talk about Meister Singer, it's always like, oh, this is a cool new dial. Nothing else has changed. They have the Pangea Aventurine, and it is just really lovely. I'm finding myself to be a real sucker for Aventurine. Yeah, same. And maybe always have been.
Everett Yeah, I think so.
Andrew Um, but this is the typical, uh, single hand Meister Singer, uh, steel case, aventurine, but the minute markers on it are kind of this like really lovely starry yellow color that kind of, that very much makes it look like you're looking into the night sky and in conjunction with aventurine, it's just, it's just really lovely. I, I think I might need to get on a Meistersinger.
Everett You may need to pick one up, you're thinking. Yeah.
Andrew They're super simple, like elegantly simple, right, in the way that just a well-tailored suit is. There's nothing exactly special about it. Everything is just so.
Everett You know, the last time we talked about Salida on the show, and I was like... Oh, you shitted all over it. Did I? A little bit. Or, excuse me, the last time we talked about Maestro Singer on the show, I was like, you know, I really do like these every time I see them. But then I sort of really looked at the watches, and I think, for me, the difficulty comes in the use of the Salida, right? Which shitted all over. And actually, I think Salida's fine. I think Salida's fine.
Andrew But for me, this watch, just the price and the movement and I think everything, it just is a little like... It's hard for me to take a Salida 200 minus a Venturine and make it a $3,000 watch. But you throw a Venturine into it, which is a notoriously difficult material to work with, you're going to pay extra for that.
Everett I think the irony is that if it was a little nicer or a little less nice, I would like it. It's just so medium, right? And, of course, if it's a little nicer, it's harder to get. If it's a little less nice, it's maybe not as special. So I don't know. I don't know what they should do. I don't have any suggestions for the brands. But it falls in a place for me where I'm going to have a lot of trouble pulling the trigger.
Andrew On this one, yeah, for sure.
Everett On any of them, right? I mean, they're all sort of in this range.
Unknown They're all... Yeah.
Everett This is just so lovely. It's gorgeous, though. I'm with you. It is a lovely watch. And you flip it over to the case back, and you're like, holy cow, that's really... Selena? Yeah. Yeah, she'd be going to the gym. It's not crazy. Anyway, I think it's a really cool watch. I'm into it. I just, I think that's where I struggle. I think that's like where the sort of rubber hits the road for me.
Andrew And it's a single hand watch, right? So are you willing to drop $3,000 on what is effectively a novelty watch?
Everett Yeah, that's right. That's right. Raj? Raj? Okay. A brand that does not use Solita. Haraj has introduced their successor to the Lensman 2 watch. So the Lensman 2 watch came out and it was this like sort of over the top, almost like camera focused watch. Haraj is a weird brand because they're, I think, a movement brand. that makes these watches that are clearly intended to... Anyway, they made their Lensman 2, which was this analog Sunny 16... it's cool and we were like but it's a little weird and it's a little silly it's one of these exoskeleton watch so it's got an anodized aluminum case that has this polished steel or polished titanium exoskeleton they just invent or invented they just introduced their haraj lensman to global so unlike the manual photography version of this watch which was sort of for me i think maybe a little too goofy this watch is very much watch it's doing watch things and it's doing them in a really neat way so lest we get Lest we get too over the top. They're describing this as a combined world timer and GMT. I think that this is perhaps not a true world timer, although it is a true GMT. But what we do have is a world timer. We've got like bezel on bezel on bezel almost here.
Andrew Yeah, the bezel, I think, is thicker. It's like more space on the top of the watch than the dial.
Everett We've got a watch that very much feels like all bezel. The watch feels like all bezel.
Andrew With an internal rotating dial.
Everett With an internal rotating bezel.
Andrew Is it an internal or is it just a 24-hour track?
Everett I say that as if it's bad. It's, of course, not bad.
Andrew It's got to just be a 24-hour track.
Everett It's gorgeous. This is a really beautiful watch in a 24-hour track. Outer world timer bezel. And it's really, really nice. So this is a Haraj... caliber in-house caliber k2 micro rotor movement which haraj does really cool things with their movement finishing i think that that is sort of their claim to fame um and this movement is sort of central to haraj's watch brand identity i think it's a 3.6 millimeter thick 72 hour power reserve cosk certified chronometer with silicone tech and the balance spring anchor and escape wheel. Uh, in short, this is a perfectly modern, excellent top tier mechanical automatic movement for 2025. It is the tops of what you can do in traditional automatic movement making. And I say traditional, I guess I mean, versus like, spring drive or you know um so uh The exoskeleton case, we've got mirror polished titanium exoskeleton around anodized, mirror polished grade five titanium surrounding the anodized aluminum inner shell. We've got a pretty, I'm going to call this a pretty big square body. It's a 39 millimeter watch, but it's going to wear every bit of 44. Only 10 millimeters thick. On paper, I think if you heard 39 by 10 millimeters thick, you're going to think a dainty watch. I think this watch is going to be a...
Andrew This is going to be wearing a Monaco. Yeah. Big old watch. Big old square.
Everett Uh, and you want it to be big, right?
Andrew Because it's stepped. Uh, and, and here is, here is my only complaint about this watch. Cause the colors are fire.
Everett Yeah. It's just like light blue with, with yellow accents and a darker and a white.
Andrew The, the, the color palette is absolutely fantastic. This, uh, beveled cut into the case is gonna get so dirty you're gonna have to maybe yeah you're gonna have to q-tip your watch every single day i mean i guess if this is a daily driver maybe every time you wear it you're gonna because even if it's not even if you store it face down it's still gonna collect dust it's gonna capture dust and i think it's gonna bind up that bezel You're going to get shit in there in a really meaningful way.
Everett I don't know. Maybe. Yeah, that's a possibility.
Andrew It's like a crumb catcher, those on the table. But they don't make crumbers for watches.
Everett We've got a pre-order price of 4,990 Swiss francs, which is a lot of money, right?
Andrew It is, but for an in-house caliber of this size,
Everett magnitude maybe right like this is doing all the cool shit this is that's a that's what you should pay comes on a rubber strap with a textile pattern stamped into it that's the one part of this watch that i'm kind of like um but and of course the price this is you're gonna have to really want this at five grand you're gonna have to look at this watch and be like yeah i need to have that and i think that there's some people that may
Andrew I could be one of those people barring the crumb catcher.
Everett And it's just, I mean, it's just cool. It's different than anything else you can buy. There's nothing else on the market that's like this.
Andrew No.
Everett And, you know, it's the kind of watch that someone's going to know. If you're the type of person, you're like, hey, look, I can't meet anybody. I just need to meet someone. It doesn't need to be a boy or a girl or anything specific. I just need to meet someone, and so I'm going to go to a place with rich people, and I'm going to wear this, and they're going to ask me about it, and I'm going to tell them about it, and then we're going to become friends. If that's what you're looking for, I think this could do it. Right? If you're that person looking for that watch, and you're like, you know, I'm just going to start going to Red Bar because I really have a desire to meet neckbeards.
Andrew I don't think neckbeards are going to dig this. I think people.
Everett I don't think so, man. I think that this is a watch that a neckbeard might be like, oh, that's cool.
Andrew Oh, he'll drool on it. He'll get his slime in your crevice. But this is a conversation piece.
Everett It's cool, yeah. It's really cool. And it's got chops, too. It's got chops in a way that I really appreciate. Yeah, they did it all right.
Andrew The sun and the moon markers at the 12 and 6. Yeah. Nailed it.
Everett Yeah, for your GMT function, yeah.
Andrew Just slightly ghosted logo.
Everett At 12 midnight and 12 noon. They're 24. They've got a sun at 12 and a moon at 24, which is cool. It sort of eliminates that confusion. Really good.
Andrew It's really lovely. And the movement. It looks space age.
Everett Yeah, I mean, these remind me a little bit of those like circuit board Yama movements. Obviously, this is sort of Harajah's whole thing, right? But with the plates that have the grids, the alternating grids versus... It has the feel of like a 1970s watch trying to look like 2025. Yeah, is that like... But they actually nailed it. Yeah, there's that modernism element to it. Yeah, this is really good. It's a really good watch. Yeah, it's good.
Andrew Next up for me, we got to talk about it. The Christopher Ward 12660 with a 6.6 millimeter thin case. So this is the 12, but they they put it on Atkins. They put it on keto. They sent it to laser surgery and they thinned this thing out. 6.6 mechanical movement. Here, I have a problem. What's that? One of the things that I love about Christopher Ward is the way they use light captured in their case, in their light catcher case technology to just like blow up the dial of your watch. In making this watch so thin, and I might be the only person with this position. Christopher Ward not being Christopher Ward. I'm not saying this isn't pure Christopher Ward because I love this watch and I think it's fantastic, but it has lost that brightness, that explosion of light that happens in the case in their other models because there's just not enough space for the light to exist. Now this is fire. This is crazy. 6.6 millimeters. This is Christopher Ward being Christopher Ward. They're on the bleeding edge of watch R&D and technology at an affordable price because this is... Do we have a price on these? Yes, it's like 1,600 pounds. So a little north of, it's in the zone, right? It's in the Christopher Ward zone. This is pure Christopher Ward, but I'm struggling to reconcile the sacrifice of what I love about Christopher Ward's case design with what I love about their trailblazing. But I'm smitten. These are fantastic. And it's mechanical movement. So that's a sacrifice you have to make to get to this, at an affordable price, to this thickness. 6.6 is wild. And it's a 12, right? It's a fantastic watch. It's a lovely watch. But that Christopher Ward explosion of light sacrifice against the implementation of technology is something I'm struggling to reconcile.
Everett You know, I happened upon a Reddit thread on this watch a handful of days ago. And the comments, I mean, I seriously felt like... It was that moment where I was like, everybody is so fucking stupid. That's how I felt. I was like, you all need to shut the fuck up and go touch grass. Christopher Ward just released a 6.6 millimeter sport watch.
Andrew And it's fire. 20 meters of water resistance, though.
Everett Okay, so for me, the water resistance is probably 30 meters, isn't it? It's 20. 20, okay. Isn't it? You know, I had in my head it was 30, Andrew, but I haven't looked. I'll double check.
Andrew I think it's 20 because we talked about this.
Everett So the water resistance for me, you know, for a steel sport watch. 30 meters of water resistance, despite the fact that paddock does it, feels like it hurts a little bit. Even 50 would feel better to me.
Andrew That's just a safety blanket, right?
Everett You can shower with 20. Yeah, sure. Well, I think it was 30. I don't know that I've ever seen a watch with 20 meters of water resistance before, so it's either 20.
Andrew It's maybe new. I'm going to look.
Everett Okay. With that said, if I can get by that, then I'm like, holy shit, this thing is great. So I'm just going to start with something that I think is controversial. I'm in the camp that Christopher Ward's waffle dials that they have on the 12 are fucking terrible. It's not good waffle texture. It is 30, okay. It is 30. Where did I see 20? It's not a good waffle texture. And for me, just with my personal tastes, the ombres and the colors and everything else, I'm just like, stop, Christopher Ward. On the nose, yep. Stop with this or keep with this and also just give me something that's not that. So when I saw the dials on this, I was really refreshed. I was like, oh, finally. Now, I think that the texture adds height. And of course, Christopher is doing everything they can to eliminate height here. And so understandable that they would not have a bunch of superfluous texture here. Well, there's people criticizing that. There's people criticizing the lack of a second hand. Fair. A second hand, if you're trying to get a thin watch, a second hand is one of the hardest things to integrate, especially with a not in-house, not like specially calibrated caliber, okay? Second hands are very hard.
Andrew And who of you are actually measuring your life down to the second?
Everett I heard so I'm on the I'm actually on the pen addict slack, which we've talked about here before. And someone said, you know, for them, like the seconds hand tells them the watch is running when they look down and that that like feeds their ADHD sort of tendencies or whatever.
Andrew I accept.
Everett Yeah. And I thought, OK, well, that that makes sense to me. But, you know, if you didn't have that and that bothered you, you look down, you can't tell if your watch is running. But, you know, you take the good with your bad. I get the feeling that people are looking at this watch and saying, you know, I saw a couple comments that were of the sort of variety, like should have put a quartz in it and made it $1,000 cheaper. Shut the fuck up. Please leave. Please leave. Take your opinions and fuck right off because this is a 6.6 millimeter watch. Automatic. Or excuse me, mechanical. Mechanical. Steel Sports Watch, just fuck right off. Leave. Go away. Please stop. Nobody wants you here. Just go to a different place. You do not need to say your opinion as if it's meaningful. It's not. It's garbage. I hate you. Don't ever talk to me again.
Andrew Are you venting all this off?
Everett Yes.
Andrew I'm fine, though. Because of my complaint?
Everett No, I think your complaint is good. You're like, they missed out on the light catcher. But I feel that's great. That's a reasonable comment. My comment is like, 30 meters of water resistance is too little. That's a fine comment. This like, they should have done quartz and walked away.
Andrew Then they'd be Timex.
Everett Yeah, right.
Andrew They wouldn't be Christopher Ward on the bleeding edge of like, how much technology can we democratize and give to people who don't want to spend $5,000, $10,000, $15,000 on a watch?
Everett No, I'm not at all... We criticize watches. That's what we do. Criticize. I'm criticizing. But I think that there's this. This Reddit thread, I don't have it, so I'm not going to send it to you. I just closed it because I was like, I fucking hate everybody. You just tantrumed through your phone. But people are acting like this isn't a cool watch. Stop it. This is cool. This is fucking really cool. It's as cool as... They're a minute repeater. It's as cool as the Belcanto. Totally. If you can't see that, if you can't see that, you're maybe not thinking about what it is that Christopher Ward's trying to do.
Andrew What it takes to get to this 12. I think they couldn't have chose a better platform to do this with because the 12 is so... familiar to that space of ultra thin, like this is the platform to be experimenting with.
Everett Everybody's trying to make a Nautilus, right? Yeah. Well, here we go. And we're kind of there. And of course we're not in some really meaningful ways, and that's okay. And Christopher Ward, when the local came out, I was like, this is cool, but it's also like... I don't really get it in terms of like watchmaking. I can see what they're doing though. They're developing their skills. Like each one of Christopher Ward's releases, whether that's the Belcanto, the Loco, or now this, each one of these releases has identified a different watchmaking skill. Now, A brand like Patek Philippe on a regular basis puts all of these things together and releases watches, which is what makes them special, which is why people will spend upwards of $90,000 on a 5711. It's not because, well, a 5711 is a weird case, but my point is Patek is Patek because it's doing these things, but Patek does them in the way that is, hey, we're going to do this. We're going to do it in tiny numbers and sell them to the handful of people around the world that can afford them. Christopher Ward is like, you know what? We think we can do this at scale. Yes. And oh, yep, we did. Here you go. You can buy it. Turns out we did.
Andrew Yeah, no, we did do that at scale.
Everett People need to stop for a second and realize what they've done here. This is incredible.
Andrew I'm really excited to see one in person.
Everett Yeah, me too.
Andrew Because that might alleviate my concern.
Everett I mean, these are going to be hard to get, I think, at least at first, despite the fact that this one Reddit thread.
Andrew They'll have a couple in New York. You know they will.
Everett And maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they won't be hard to get. Maybe you'll be able to get one if you want one.
Andrew Christopher Ward, they don't have supply issues.
Everett They've done a relatively good job. Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
Andrew Like you want the watch on release. You can get it. And three months later, you can still get it.
Everett Yeah. This is, I mean, for me, in terms of watch innovation, this is the coolest thing since the Belcanto. I just think in our space, Andrew, where we live, this is it, man.
Andrew I think Christopher Ward is doing the most important envelope pushing in the affordable watch space.
Everett Yeah, that's right.
Andrew Nobody else has yet been able to grab their coattails and ride it in a meaningful way. But they're doing it. They're doing the innovating. They're doing the get it to market thing.
Everett actual development and it's not and it's not a perfect watch and that's and and that's a a fair point to make right you know andrew doesn't like that the case sort of gets rid of that light catcher element that he sees like is the embodiment of christopher warden i don't like that you know they couldn't figure out how to give me 20 meters of extra water resistance in this watch or whatever that's fine we're talking about two thousand dollar watches these are veblen goods yeah sub two thousand dollar watches you know this this is not a world in which we can these minor critiques yeah could exist at the twenty thousand dollar level yeah Yeah, that's right. They do. They do exist in the 2000s. Yeah. And these are minor critiques.
Andrew You know, Paddock gives us 30 meters of water resistance universally. That's just their thing now.
Everett And, of course, they're taking the piss on that.
Andrew It has to be tongue-in-cheek. It had to be, like, someone like us who they hired on accident whose, like, uncle is important. And they're like, hey, let's make everything 30 meters.
Everett They're like, why not? There's a couple more watches that I think we need to talk about. I know there's some watch news that you wanted to talk about. I'm going to just briefly talk about the Earthen Company.
Andrew We can maybe skip that watch news.
Everett That's fine. That's fine. So the Earthen Company has just released a... Is this a Dirty Dozen or an A11? It's like an A11 field watch, but that comes in a... actual ceramic case and is under a thousand dollars that's me not burying the lead here so what we have is a miota 9039 automatic a11 field watch um i think we've got a initial run of a hundred parts of three models which is a white ceramic a sort of dark gray or black ceramic and then i think it's like a sort of light blue android is that right or like a creamy yeah so so bluebird has a full loom white dial in a white case okay highlighting snowy skis so yeah we've got um white out emphasizing contrast with a black dial in a white case bluebird with a full loom white dial in a white case and then we've got the the dark sort of gunmetal case as well These are full ceramic, and they're brushed and polished ceramic, and they cost less than $1,000. Yeah. Whoa. Yeah. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. 38 millimeters by 10 height with an automatic. Yeah.
Unknown Yeah.
Everett Well, of course, we don't get a bracelet with these. Fair.
Andrew Yeah, you're not going to keep it under $1,000 with a bracelet.
Everett We've got a case back with four screws, which is to say these guys are like watch people. I don't know that I... A color matched... Have you seen a water resistance number on these, Andrew?
Andrew My guess is 50, but I have not. But you get a color match to the dial band in your crown, which is in kind of a nothing detail. But if you add that detail as a watchmaker, it's because you give a shit.
Everett Yeah. These are really cool. And they come with, this isn't sailcloth. Is that what you call this? This waterproof textile, waterproof coated textile? I think it's sailcloth. Yeah, okay. So these have sailcloth that appears to be real sailcloth too. So Earthen is a Hong Kong company. jonathan chan which is one of the co-founders of horology club um and these are watch and it's a thousand dollar ceramic watch 100 meters too with 100 meters of water resistance and it's it's 38 by 10 and i mean it looks a lot like my hamilton khaki mechanical it looks a lot like every watch that's ever been made of this design that's not a unique design it's like hey this is my interpretation of it But it's 38 by 10. And it's got a Miyota movement in it. You can get a full... Wait. Why doesn't everybody... This is like... What? Yeah. These are so cool. These are so cool.
Andrew Yeah. This is not a brand that I was familiar with.
Everett No, nobody is. Nobody's familiar with this brand. These are so cool. I want to get rid of my Hamilton and buy one of these today.
Unknown Do it.
Everett You won't. Can I? Can I? I mean, I would trade my Hamilton in for this watch. Can we buy these?
Unknown I don't know.
Everett Yeah. Add to cart. Okay. So now we criticize. I hate the handset. I don't hate the handset. I hate the hour hand.
Andrew yeah the hour hand should have it's uh it's rectangular and there's no there's no point to it and it doesn't match the remainder of the handset right we have got a uh like a lollipop, skeletonized balance on the second hand that goes all the way to the end of the track, which is great. The minute hand goes right to the track, and then the power hand is just a rectangle. I don't know why that decision exists.
Everett And you can't get the black, you can't get the overcast with White Loom. So, criticisms. But that's the one I want the most, but, but I don't want the dark loom fully loomed dark loom.
Andrew It's, it's just kind of Foteen on the hands and your Cardinal directions. It's not, it's not across the entire dial.
Everett I think I probably get the, uh, the white out if I'm going to get one of these.
Andrew I also would have appreciated a black crown on the black case instead of a steel crown with a black crown. Cause a black crown with a steel band or a, or a silver, uh, Inlay would have been really cool.
Everett Yeah, and we've got all sort of silver steel metal implements on these. So the mid case is made of ceramic, but the case back and the case back mount, you know, the movement holder are steel.
Andrew I always wonder about that interaction between those two things over time. Steel is... not going to fracture in the way that ceramic will. And I was like, wonder how many times that watch can get served.
Everett How many times can you whack on it?
Andrew No. How many times can you open that case back and then seal it back up without affecting the case?
Everett Bro. I think these are freaking, these are dope watches.
Andrew No, they're fire.
Everett They're, they're fantastic. I think people poo-poo Miyota movements in a world that's not ours. But you know me, I'm a huge fan of a Miyota. This is a fire watch, dude. These are so good.
Andrew Agreed. Next up, some new watches from Fears into their collection.
Everett Fears, again, the 18th century watch company. When did it start? Okay, I had them in the 1700s. 19th century watch company, victim of the quartz crisis, brought back by family member... Nicholas Bowman's gargle, right? Just a handful of years ago and ever since the darling of the sort of enthusiast, the high end.
Andrew They just do such good stuff. So we have a new Brunswick 38 with a charcoal rose dial, steel case, charcoal and rose gold. Stop it. Just stop.
Everett I need it.
Andrew Brunswick 40.5 jump hour. I'm not super on board with the jump hour, but it is also really, really good. It's fire. Like this great burgundy center circle in your jump hour dial. And the one that I don't get is the Redcliffe 39.5.
Everett What if I tell you that the Redcliffe is 9.65 thick?
Andrew Mmm. Still don't get it.
Everett Really?
Andrew I don't get... No, I love this watch. I just don't get it how it fits into the Fears catalog. It's a sub-10 millimeter sports watch with an automatic movement. It is. It's using the Le Gipre 100. 3,350 British pounds. I mean, it's a... This watch reminds me of like Vero, right? This is like a very tool watch. Very modern. Very modern, which is inconsistent with how I see Fears. I see Fears as this very 70s, like 40s to 70s inspired brand. Fair enough. And then you drop this like very modern...
Everett pro-trek-esque watch on me, and I don't... I get more like... I get more... You know what I get from this is Bremont vibes. I get Bremont vibes from this.
Andrew Yeah, like Bremont, Vero, like take your pick of modern tool watches. I don't see how it fits into the collection. You take the Fears logo off of it and put anyone else's on it, and I'm infatuated, so I'm DTF.
Everett I love it that Fears can span both of these worlds. So we look at that... We look at that... jump hour cushion case jump hour with a barley corn pattern on the outer dial like a genuine barley corn gyoche and then we and then we go to the red cliff i'm like fears what can't you do has no fears nuns and they're just fucking they're like we'll do this and we'll do that yeah We're going to do a jumping hour barley corn in a style that nobody has seen in 100 years. And we're also going to do a Braymont and release them in the same press release. Yeah. Cool, man. Good luck. Cool, man.
Andrew Yeah. Because even the press release, the trio photo, it's just like. It's like, hey, I brought my brother to play.
Everett One of these things is not like the other.
Andrew Yeah, like clearly the stepchild or the milkman's child. It just doesn't fit, but it also fits perfectly.
Everett Yeah, I got to tell you this. The Brunswick 38 charcoal rose. girl. This feels a little bit like Tag Heuer Camaro to me. But then we've got these rose gold plated accents and this thing is just sex.
Andrew I really hope they have one at their table. With the because I know I'm faster than Nicholas.
Everett I know he looks pretty fit.
Andrew He's got long legs but I believe that I can make my way through the crowd faster.
Everett And, you know, it's a 38 by 38 case. You get with the with the lugs, you get up to 43. So, I mean, this thing's just going to wear. Tremendously, probably big, but tremendously 100 meters of water.
Andrew I put on a Brunswick last time we were at wind up and I was just like, oh, no, it was smaller than you thought. Everything I put on from fears was just was problematic in how good it fit. and how good it felt.
Everett Now, the marketing materials I've seen for both, or for the 38, suggest that it comes with either a bracelet or a, they use the term cordovan leather strap, but I think this is a cordovan colored calf. I don't think this is a shell strap.
Andrew They would say it was shell if it was.
Everett Yeah, I always, I think the term cordovan.
Andrew It just says leather strap here, and it is. It's a word that's been misused for so long it has taken on new meaning.
Everett So I just, in case you see that and you think you're getting, I don't think that it's a shell strap. It's not.
Andrew You just look at even the photos of it.
Everett Yeah, it's great. It's grainy. You know, the only other one, Andrew, this is a weird watch. I read about this and I was like, how does this exist? So sort of like the Earthen watch where I was like, what? This watch, same thing happened. And I think that this one... So today is the 31st. Yes. So tomorrow will be the 1st, and this watch will be available tomorrow. We don't publish until the 2nd.
Andrew So it's available yesterday. Get on it.
Everett I don't think you're going to be able to get this when you're hearing this. Sorry, guys. Sorry. And I'm not sure anybody's going to be able to get these anyway. Do you know what the Copenhagen-based T-A-W-C company is? No. I've never heard of them. They make watches. They make VH31 Meccaquartz movements. VH31 Meccaquartz watches. Not Mecca Quartz chronographs, but Mecca Quartz three-handers. And it's the 1677 reference is what they sell. Beautiful. Beautiful watches. Never heard of them. And they're cheap. They're cheap. Yeah. It's a 37 millimeter. I mean, they're just beautiful. They're gorgeous, gorgeous watches, but I've never heard of them because this is like this random company that's making these weird old... It's a full sterling case. Well, their regular ones are steel. They've teamed up with a guy named Nolan Daniel White, who I think I'm supposed to have heard of. Haven't heard of him. Yeah, the way they talk about him. It's like, oh, the famous, you've undoubtedly encountered. No, I haven't. No, I haven't, Hodinkee. Okay. He's a Montreal-based consultant. And this says, who's behind your favorite menswear accounts, favorite menswear account. I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
Andrew I'm not cool enough to have a favorite menswear account who has a favorite menswear account.
Everett Listen, Tim Jefferies.
Andrew You're making me feel bad. I don't feel bad. I'm just not cool enough. And I'm okay with that.
Everett They made a full stainless case with a stainless dial.
Andrew Sterling.
Everett For under a thousand bucks. sterling not stainless sterling that's what did i say stainless you said stainless so many times but you know that what i meant to say was sterling but it's important that it's said it's a 925 sterling case with a 925 sterling dial that sells for 925 bucks but there's only there's fucking 25 of them because they have to eat a huge loss on it maybe is that what's happening calling it the 925 with 925 Okay. It's an Art Deco dial. It's hot. It's 37 millimeters. It's 10 millimeters high because it's got this VH31 megacords movement in it. It's gorgeous. It's simple. It's attractive and stunning and sterling silver. And I have a bitch.
Andrew Tell me. They needed to choose a better model. This fella's wrist is insufficient to support the lug-to-lug of the watch.
Everett Isn't that our guy, though? Isn't that Nolan himself?
Andrew It may be Nolan himself. He's wearing a pinky ring. He wears a pinky ring. It's probably sterling. The model photo of this watch makes it look like the lug-to-lug is probably 54 millimeters. He looks like a dainty fellow. Honestly, he looks like he has wrists like mine. Very round wrists, which does not seem to support this kind of flat, long watch.
Everett It's 37 millimeters, and it looks to me like it has the proportions of a vintage Patek that was probably much smaller. So it looks like it's a 34 millimeter watch that they've scaled up, which means it's going to wear fairly flat, and the claw lugs will sort of either work for your wrist or perhaps not. I disagree with Andrew that this is as bad on this fellow's wrist as Andrew thinks.
Andrew It looks... He's not big enough for that watch.
Everett Anyway, I think it's beautiful. And I think I'm like, how does this even exist? And is there any chance? Yeah, no, there's no chance.
Andrew No, you'll never even see one.
Everett So you can pre-order these tomorrow, which for you at home is yesterday. Good luck. Shit, maybe I need to get one because I'm a little smitten, Andrew. And the photos that they have in all the marketing materials, the watch, the case is tarnished. which of course sterling silver takes much longer like or you know tarnishing is is oxidation and so it takes time so they've obviously forced tarnished this thing so you could see over time sterling obviously this isn't a cheap watch but it is so affordable for what you're getting precious metal for under a thousand bucks you don't that doesn't exist it's nothing yeah I'll just say Sterling's also very soft. So this is. Oh, you're going to fuck it up. Yeah.
Andrew You're going to leave chunks of it places. Yeah. It won't be 925 for long.
Everett It's gorgeous. And I've got an affinity for Sterling. I've talked before about my money clip and my lighter. And I've got an affinity for Sterling. Have you ever even fueled that? Yeah, I keep it with fuel. Okay. And I keep an emergency fuel canister in case I need to light something with it because that's going to be the moment. I've lit like nothing ever with it because I don't smoke.
Andrew I bet it's not even scorched on the inside yet.
Everett It probably is just a little bit. Yeah, I play with it. That's all.
Andrew One last thing. Breitling, very much like Travis Kelsey, kept banging on the door. Ham here, ham here. And officially a partnership has been announced between Breitling and the National Football League as the official timekeeper of the National Football League. Didn't they already do this? No, this is finally it's finally a thing.
Everett I thought they had a licensing.
Andrew They had a licensing agreement for products. Right. So they bought.
Everett Oh, so now they are the official time.
Andrew They are the official timepiece of the NFL. I see. Which means that dudes trying to wear their Richard meal on the field are going to get an even heftier fine.
Everett Is that right? Huh? Is that true? Yeah, like two years ago? No, no, I know what you're talking about, but this doesn't limit people from wearing other products, like on the sidelines or whatever, does it?
Andrew It could. I mean, I don't know. I'm not a lawyer, and I haven't read the details of the official partnership. Uh, I was watching, uh, Andy Reed can wear whatever the fuck you want.
Everett Right.
Andrew Andy Reed is obviously wearing a no name brand from like the spinner at the head of the Walmart aisle. Right. It's not even a Casio. It's like a rip off of a Casio. Uh, I noticed this morning. Uh, so I was watching, I was, I was obviously watching this F1 race and they, they have these in cockpit views of these guys driving, uh, and everyone is wearing a watch on their left driving glove. Which is where typical people wear their watch. And then there was a prolonged kind of slow-mo view of this guy driving, and I was like, That shit's printed on. There's the couple teams that they were showing in cockpit view. It's not a real watch. On their glove, they have a printed on watch. It's just pure. It's just printed on their glove. Advertisement.
Everett On their retard glove. Advertisement.
Andrew Yeah. Cool. Yeah, it was real weird. But I kind of loved it. Yeah, so Breitling and NFL have announced an official partnership. So, you know, I feel like I need to get Breitling.
Everett Andrew, other things, what do you got?
Andrew This is another thing you didn't see coming. Yesterday, no, two days ago, kids are home from school. I wake up like a little late. I wake up at like seven, which in my house is pretty late. And I hear like a weird narrator's voice coming from the television. But but it's like narrating like I just can't make it out like it seems familiar and And I go downstairs and I'm like, what are you watching? And my wife's like haunted mansion. And my kids are not desensitized to scary things on TV. They both get real nervous about like movies and TV shows. And I was like, are you watching the, like the Eddie Murphy one or the newer one? Cause it's kind of scary. And she's like, no, no, no. We're watching the haunted mansion. Well, I don't feel like that answered my question. She's like, no, no, no. We're watching the ride. What? So this year for Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration, they've released. point of view videos onto Disney Plus of about a dozen of their rides, another like dozen or so walkthroughs, nighttime, uh, firework shows, behind the scenes stuff that's super fun. So they have front row seats in POV, like in point of view. I don't like saying POV. I don't know why. I don't know. I hate saying that. But from the point of view of the spectator, of these rides and of these attractions, and I... Love it. It's super fun. And it's such an easy marketing strategy for them where they were like, oh, let's just put a camera on the front seat of the Incredicoaster. Yeah, yeah. And that's what they did. But they did it during closed periods. So there's like, you know, where the usual distractions of crowds are there or like people or noise. It's just like this totally isolated event. So we watched... galaxies. Oh, no, no, no. We watched Rise of the Resistance and I've been on Rise of the Resistance and you wait in this really long line and then you're kind of like herded like cattle through the ride, which is how Disneyland is. But then you watch it in this in this video and it's just the camera where you get to see all of the things you get to feel the stuff. But I'm like, man, I think I should go back to Disneyland because this is really fun. Like I've watched Jungle Cruise about eight times because I love Jungle Cruise. And I've watched it so many times. Oh, it's fun. Because you just get to like enjoy the ride minus the sensory experience. And it is super fun. It's a really cool marketing thing that Disney has done for their 70th anniversary that you could watch. Like I could have easily gone onto YouTube and watched Jungle Cruise. you're not going to get the same production.
Everett Because Disney producing it.
Andrew They're really doing it, yeah. So I finally got to go on the new Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which replaced Splash Mountain. I think they could have done a better job with some of the animatronics. I don't super dig the anime, like the artistry on the human characters.
Everett Yeah.
Andrew It's not poor, but it just doesn't quite land for me.
Everett I don't know why. Fair enough. Yeah, I'll have to look at it. But it's super fun. Splash Mountain always had its charm, but part of the charm was that it was old.
Andrew They kept some of the Splash, so the Splash Mountain bears are still in Tiana's Adventure.
Everett Oh, that's cool.
Andrew So they kept some of it. There's some Easter eggs hidden about. Oh, that's fun. But it's like you get to like sit front row and center without a line.
Everett Do they have one? Did they have all of these?
Andrew They have like pirates and they've got so they have pirates, Indiana Jones, Radiator Springs, Racers, Incredicoaster, Haunted Mansion, The Bayou Adventure, Cars Land, Pixar, Pal around Thunder Mountain, Jungle Cruise, Soaring Around the World. Good news, on my television, it doesn't make me sick because Soarin' California makes me super sick.
Everett Oh, really? Super sick. That's funny. It's my favorite. It is by far my favorite experience.
Andrew IMAX makes me sick, and I think it's because you see the depth, but you don't have depth, which is disorienting, and it makes me super sick. That's so funny. You get to go through the Avengers Campus, Hollywoodland, Main Street, Mickey's Toontown, Galaxy's Edge, and Rise of the Resistance.
Everett Oh, that's cool. That's really cool. it's like it's fun it like if you have disney plus which you probably do whether or not you've seen these just pop on and get to enjoy a little taste of most magical place on earth andrew i've got another thing and i don't have it with you so lately it's been my um it's been my habit to um bring over whiskeys that i'm gonna give you as my other thing And I'm not done this year. Sometimes we get a little weird. I'm going to talk to you about a whiskey that I tried recently. And I was like, Jesus, I want this. It's really good. So I bought a bottle. Weird. I bought a bottle. And I do that frequently. But I bought a bottle that I was kind of like, I don't know anything about this brand, really. The reason I bought it is because it was an eight-year rye at 100 proof. It was just on the shelf. I was like, it's worth buying. Shelf, eight-year. And I asked my liquor store bro. I said, hey, Jesse, what's this? And he was like, yeah, you know, weird. You can get these. I tried it and I was over the moon. And so I decided to bring it in and it's not selling a ton. And I picked up the bottle and I held it up to the light and it was about the color of Jägermeister.
Unknown Okay.
Everett Which is to say... Opaque. Opaque. Black, almost, but not quite. And I was like, good. And he said, yeah, good. I said, it's not like tannic? No. I said, fuck, okay, I'm just going to bring it home. It's $130, and it's out of Washington. Washington State. It's called Woodinville. And I've heard of the brand before. I've seen their products, but never been compelled to buy anything. Anyway, I bought a Woodinville eight-year rye. And I got it home and I poured a glass and I sat down and I sat the glass down next to my chair in the front room. And then I went back to the kitchen. Kim doesn't like it when I leave bottles on the counter, even for like short periods of time. She's like, can you please put this away? And so I went back to the kitchen and I picked it up and I dropped it. We have porcelain tiles. So that's why you didn't bring it. That's why I didn't break it. I dropped it and it shattered. So $125, let's say, worth of eight-year-old rye. So I spent about 20 minutes cleaning it up, which incidentally is a perfect amount of time to have let this breathe. And then I sat down and it was entirely smitten. Buy this pour. $130 is a lot for a pour of whiskey.
Andrew And I've spent... You didn't get your, like, turkey baster and, like, clean it up and put it through, like, a cheesecloth?
Everett Nope. No, impossible. Not possible. I could have perhaps, had I had more confidence in the cleanliness of my kitchen floor, I could have, like, pushed it together. But no, I mean, it just wasn't going to happen. anyway so i cleaned it up and i threw it away and i sat down it's phenomenal i've spent that amount of money on several whiskeys and i think that's a hard for bourbon and rye specifically those like traditional sort of Southern American style whiskeys. I think that's a hard price point because typically you're getting something that's better than the $80 ECBP or whatever. But in a degree that's like... it's just almost hard to justify. Like, really, $60 is... If you can find a good product for $60, it's going to be very good. And if you buy the similar product for $130, it's going to be... very good so you almost have to get to like nearly 200 to have and then from there you you're getting these products that are fantastic but you're also like is any whiskey is any bourbon worth 200 you know andrew and i have tried very nice riskies recently and it's really nice but then you go back and you drink like a 50 1792 foolproof and you're like i don't know
Andrew I got to say, as much as I like that Calumet 18, there's two dozen whiskeys I go back to before that.
Everett I mean, price being no object, it's the best whiskey I've ever had. No doubt about it. It didn't hit me right. Well, I don't know about you. I loved it. For me, that is without a doubt the best. And that includes, you know, we've had Mardi Gras Rye at... At whiskey bars, I've had Pappy. I've had everything. I've never had another whiskey that I liked as much as that, price being no object. But what we had to pay for it, it's crazy, right? And so whiskey is just tough. This is sort of the name of the game, right? Like diminishing returns, yada, yada, yada. For $130 for this Woodinville rye, if you see it, pick it up. It's there. It's phenomenal. I'm going to try to find another bottle.
Andrew Is it on the shelf still? I don't know.
Everett I have to go check. Okay. Yeah, I messaged Jesse. I sent him a picture, and he's like, oh, no. And he's like, if it's still sealed, I can take it back. Like, if you drop it, but the top is still sealed, they'll return it. OLCC will return it.
Unknown We should have known that.
Everett Well, but of course I had opened it, right? So I had already poured some. So anyway, wah, wah, really good. Woodinville ate your rye.
Andrew All right. Well, it'll be in the notes. You can send Everett a, what's the word? Sympathy bottle.
