Andrew | Hello fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the watch clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? |
Everett | Just productive as all get out. Uh, yeah, no, I'm doing well. It was a good weekend. Did a bunch of stuff. Baseball game, ultimate Frisbee. uh got my yard it's oh god it looks so good uh yeah went on a run with my kid today |
Andrew | Yeah, I'm doing well. How are you? I'm good. I just came from a friend's 40th birthday party, which was kind of an all day affair and a most of yesterday affair for me. So I smoked some pork shoulders, had some chicken wings. |
Everett | How do you, how do you, how do you do that? Do you, you roll them into a joint or is it like a, you get a big |
Andrew | You just take butcher paper, like you get a really good grind on it, get butcher paper and just light and suck best you can. Never inhaled though, never inhaled. Never inhaled the pork shoulder. So I smoked some pork shoulders yesterday, they turned out really good. Had some chicken wings brining yesterday, smoked them today, they turned out really good. brought them over today to watch the F1 Miami race, which is the first time I've ever like sat down and deliberately watched an F1 race. And they, this friend group of mine got into F1 a couple of years ago because we were in Vegas when they were constructing the Vegas F1 track. And that brought their attention to F1. And then they've just stuck with it. So they've been following F1 for now a couple of years. I watched my first race, like deliberately. I've watched F1's been on the background. Sure. Hundreds of times in my life, just like NASCAR. It was interesting. I, it, I enjoyed it. Um, the storyline of like the season long, the race itself, it's like, okay, race cars, like neat. They're driving 200 miles an hour conceptualizing. That's pretty crazy. Cause then you think about like how the fastest you've ever driven in a car. And it's like three, it's like four, three or four times that. Yeah. I mean, like I've, I've, I've never touched 120 miles an hour in a car, but very close. And that feels fast. Like that's crazy fast. Sure. You don't have time to make decisions. You don't have time. Like you're just, you're just there. You're along for the ride. And these dudes are doing like very technical maneuvering of their rocket ships at 200 miles an hour. Yeah, that's crazy. |
Everett | Yeah. Well, and I will say not to say that 200 and whatever, 50 miles an hour isn't fast because it's clearly very, very fast. But part of the reason 120 feels fast in your Isuzu Rodeo is because Ford Explorer, but yeah. It's because, you know, it's not really built for that. It's not really built for that, right? So everything goes, everything goes to shit, right? Traction goes to shit. The suspension goes to shit. |
Andrew | That one weird wobble is very, yes. |
Everett | So an F1 car at 120, I bet. We'll be like, Oh, this is manageable. |
Andrew | But have you seen, I've seen videos of these guys, of, of these F1 athletes doing, uh, like, um, reaction drills with like NFL players, like tennis ball catch. And it's crazy how fast these guys are like just their reactions time, their like perception and reaction. Um, They're truly athletes. Just exercising in a very different way. But it was interesting to watch. The storyline of the season is interesting. It was fun. So we ate good barbecue and watched an F1 race. And then we went to a local beer joint restaurant that has a very wide selection of packaged beer that you get a discount if you buy it to go. And brought us some tasties to drink tonight. Good day, good weekend. I mean, spending the day tending the grill is fantastic. |
Everett | Andrew, you said that perfectly without knowing it. I decided today that I was going to read a couple of reviews of 40 and 20, the WatchCooker podcast. Oh, okay. How do you feel about that? I actually don't care. I sort of expect them. I used to check these things. I don't check them anymore. We're too big to care about the reviews. No, no, it's not too big. We just don't care. But some of these are kind of good. I like this one. So this is a three-star review, which is not bad. That's like a 60%. I think this is a barely passing grade. Hey, that's, that's all I need. The watch content is pretty good, but sometimes their banter gets bogged down by corny, unfunny joke premises. this is incorrect this is me guilty uh in this back to back to the review in the episode i just listened to one of them was talking about smoking meat and said that there was a cut of meat that they don't sell anymore paren or something like that and the other jumped in and said and said something about a glory hole. Then they went on for a few more seconds joking about a glory hole. It was just kind of lame and made me turn it off, not because I'm offended or anything of the sort, but because it's just idle filler. Like, let's go guys, glory holes aren't funny. Bulldozer dupes, we hear you. You're not wrong. It probably wasn't that funny. And so for that, we apologize. No, we don't, ish. |
Andrew | With that said, appreciate the commentary, and we're likely to keep doing that. Yeah, we're hanging out in my home office, which is really the recording studio that I let my wife use as a home office when she works from home, drinking beer and talking about watches. |
Everett | We do not, I will just say this, and this is a true statement, we do not get paid enough for this to be a professional podcast. And by enough, I mean any. So yeah. Fair point. Sometimes the jokes aren't very funny. Cause we're not funny, but we're enjoying the conversation. |
Andrew | We're enjoying the conversation in the moment. |
Everett | Okay, I've got one more. Uh, guys in this episode, you said that legibility doesn't matter, which is nuts. And continually whine when divers and regulators are 12.5 millimeters to 13 millimeters. Get a grip. Thickness isn't be all and all. Uh, that's from back us 18. |
Andrew | That's Mike. Why is Mike trolling us in the comments? |
Everett | Uh, you know, uh, it, That's a fair criticism. But that's a four, he gave us a four star. That's 80%, that's a fucking B. Yeah, he just disagrees with our watch tastes. I'm fine with that. Yeah, I'm fine with that. Okay, I've got, I really liked this one, I want it right. This is from Farquad Amundian. Sorry, Farquad, if I messed that up really bad. He did. I'm calling this the best watch podcast for Americans. Which sounds weird, I'm sure. I just can't listen to someone with a French-Swiss accent talk about anything, really. They just sound so pretentious. In general, the Brits and Scots do as well. Basically, I'm endorsing this podcast because it's people who sound like me talking about watches. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. In fact, I actually really like the review. |
Andrew | Is it five stars? |
Everett | Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's a five star review, Andrew. |
Andrew | That dude liked our glory hole joke for sure. He liked it. Cause that's us. He liked it. |
Everett | We just sound down home simple folk. We are simple folk. Um, anyway, I, I just saw those and I thought, you know, I like, I like these reviews. Um, I liked all of them actually, you know, obviously, you know, we're, we're, we're sometimes not funny and we have tastes and preferences and microphones and microphones. That's it. That's what we do here. Uh, we, we don't get a salary. We, you know, Yeah, that's right. But we do really enjoy this, but I think we're sort of like at the point where it's sort of like what you see is what you get, right? Is that? Oh yeah, we're not getting better. No, no, no. We won't get worse either. There was a moment where I feel like we were getting better, but that was a long time ago. That was like hook, hoagins in the hairspring era. Yeah. We did some cool episodes, but now I feel like I don't know, now we're like, we're like. We found where we are, we found where we fit. The tube of Nestle Toll House cookie dough that's sitting in your fridge, right? |
Andrew | And you're just taking bites of it every time you go by. You're not gonna make those cookies. That's right. You're like, you know, it's not, it's not great. That's the snack tube. |
Everett | It's not great. But it does the trick. That's what we are. We're the snack tube of cookie dough that's in your freezer, refrigerator, excuse me. Andrew, talking about watches. Should we do a quick Spotify rip up real quick? I don't think we need to. We've talked about it a little bit. Spotify removed a bunch of our podcasts. We talked about this previously for having improperly licensed music. Not true. We've got proper license for all the music we've ever used on this show. |
Andrew | Continuously used. We've played some music on the show on accident. Okay. That has been captured in the background. |
Everett | We've either had a formal license or we've had some sort of fair use principle. We've not ever used any sound on the show that was not properly documented. Correct. In one way or another. With that said, Spotify removed 100-ish of our shows. I do think we've said this on the air before. And because they weren't, it's AI, it's AI. There's some AI that was like, saw something it didn't like, pulled 80 of our shows, we appealed it, they said no, you didn't provide the license. I said the license is right in the show notes. It's in the show notes of every episode, it's a license, it's a license granted by the maker. Anyway, long story short, Spotify blows. Blows. Yeah, just, I mean, Spotify's fine, actually. But this is the type of thing, we're not gonna make any effort to fix this. If you're on Spotify and listening to us, I think the new episodes are coming through and I think that you should have no problem. But if you wanna go find older episodes of 40 and 20 Watch Clicker Podcast, God forbid, I have no clue why you would. With that said, don't go to Spotify. That's it, right? Talk about watches. This is not as peppery as I thought it was gonna be. We're drinking a Peppercorn Imperial Wit Not super peppery, Andrew. |
Andrew | It isn't. I just want to talk about this watch briefly. Konstantin Chaikin, the final version of the 1.65 millimeter Thin King, the world's thinnest mechanical watch. In terms of top-down design, it's really cute. It looks like a little smiley face, like a steel smiley face. And that's cool and all. |
Everett | Constantine Chaikin is the watch company, if you don't know at home, that's famous for making sort of clown, I think that's their most, their ubiquitous model is the clown face model. |
Andrew | What I'm just blown away by is 1.6 millimeters thick for a movement And and if you think about that this this bracelet that you're wearing is what 3.1. That's right 3.6. Okay, so two full millimeters slimmer than that bracelet Correct houses an entire movement. That is mind-blowing to me. That's the kind of thing that like got me really excited about mechanical watches is these tiny machines and pushing the envelope of What can like how can we? do this better and better and better. And frankly, for $700,000, you should be able to make a 1.6 millimeter thick watch. That's, I don't know, I feel like a fair assessment. Just absolutely mind-blowing what technology is coming out of and into watchmaking. |
Everett | Yeah I mean Piaget and Bulgari are sort of the industry leaders in really thin watchmaking and You know, Konstantin Chaykin, not exactly a household name, right? I mean, certainly in the enthusiast space, I think most people will have either heard of Konstantin Chaykin at the very least, or certainly has seen his watches on the Grammar and Reddit or whatever. But yeah, not exactly, I mean, I think it would be like unrealistic to compare the power of Piaget or Bulgari to Chaikin. I mean, they're in different leagues, right? In terms of, so this is impressive. Again, the watch, we're not really gonna talk about it, right? But it is really cool. It's a cool watch. |
Andrew | 40 millimeter case. |
Everett | 1.65 thick uh 5.4 thick on the case total thickness 5.4 1.65 on the movement 5.4 is still incredible it's crazy yeah nuts yeah really cool um i Oh no, this does say, for the thinking, it's total 1.65, you're right. The Paladin King is 45 and 5'4". |
Andrew | Yeah, look at the profile view of this with a leather strap on it. The leather strap is thicker than the watch. Yeah, that's nuts, man. |
Everett | That's nuts. You know, this is actually for... Yeah, that's funny. I mean, for me, this is not... I don't want to watch this then. |
Andrew | I know I'm like always. I don't either, but I want this technology to exist and be used to influence other watchmaking brands. |
Everett | Um, you know, Seiko came out with a new Prospex 1968 watch. I think that this was announced a while back where people kind of had an idea about it a while back. But this is the 1968 Divers 300. um which had a high beat movement um this is an old school really cool watch from the 60s maybe a little less fanfare than our than our 1965 62 moss um but they've released a heritage prospects 1968 heritage divers gmt spb 519 this is a regular collection non-limited watch and it's got a few tricks up its sleeve. So first I'll describe it. This is a big sort of Marine Master-ish case. It's not a Monoblock case, so it's not, I mean, this isn't a Marine Master, it doesn't say that anywhere, no one's referring to it, but to me, this feels Marine Master-y. It follows, It follows closely from a watch that was released kind of recently, 2023, the Prospex 1968 Diver's Modern Reinterpretation GMT came out. This was a green watch, or at least the one I've seen the most was green. There's also a black version and like a cocktail tiny version. Really, really cool watch. Gorgeous, the black in particular has like gold accents and a stoplight. Anyway, really, really cool watch. So, but this one, they've got a new, they've got a new, a bit of a new platform here and it's got some tricks up its sleeve. So, slightly thicker, slightly bigger. We've got now a 42 millimeter watch, which is 13.3 thick. which for a Seiko diver is pretty good. And for a Seiko GMT, it's really very good. And no compromise in water resistance. And we've got more water resistance. So I believe the reinterpretation was 250, if I'm remembering that right, or maybe even 200. We've now got a full 300 meters of water resistance. uh we get sapphire gmt but what i really what i really really like about this is that we've got the new clasp and or we've got seiko's new dive clasp which they've they've released on a few limited editions here in the last year. This is our first catalog watch with Seiko's new dive clasp and I'm pretty excited about this. It's still not a gorgeous or lovely clasp. It's still a Seiko clasp, but it is improved in many, many ways. Milling is better. The overall shape and size is better. You get two and a half millimeters of micro adjustments. I think that this is good. I think this is good. They did a good thing here. |
Andrew | Yeah, I agree. This is this is the class they should have had in this range of watch the entire time So it's nice to see they're catching up |
Everett | Yeah, well, what they caught up to was 12 years ago. So that's the reality with Seiko, right? There's just not what they're gonna focus on. So these are cool, man. I think that they're coming in at $1,700 US, which- This says 1,900 euros. Which I think is- For pre-order. 1,700 US dollars. Cause we're we've dollar is euros upside down on the dollar right now. So, um, yeah, 1700 bucks. |
Andrew | I'm fine with that price. Yeah, absolutely. For, for a GMT for the upgrades. Yep, absolutely. |
Everett | Yeah, that's right. And let me just double check before I say the words. This has the six arm movements. Yeah, the six are 54. So it's a which is a collar style GMT. Yeah. I think this is, which, you know, we don't engage in those conversations, but there's some arguments to color style. Whatever, I don't care. Beautiful ceramic bezel on this thing. This is a really, really high quality watch. For $1,700, I'd like to get my hands on one. This is a really gorgeous watch. Crispy white dial, blue ceramic bezel, red GMT hand, excellent, of course, stoplight second hand. |
Andrew | ISO credentialed with a 430 date window. Divers on the dial. |
Everett | This got some, it's got some cred. Yeah, I mean, you might look at this and be like, yeah, it's a Seiko, right? Yeah, guys, uh, which was my initial reaction as well. But I think this is a notable release. We don't talk about every Seiko dive watch release. Otherwise we'd just have to have it. We'd have twice a week. We'd be a show about Seiko dive watches. Um, but this one's notable. I I'm, I'm, I'm down with that one. |
Andrew | Agreed. |
Everett | Um, |
Andrew | I talk about another brand that we talk about a lot, and we don't talk about all their releases. Citizen Zenshin 60 Super Titanium Collection. This might look like a familiar watch, but it's titanium now. |
Everett | Well yes, Seiko released these, this watch, what did I say? Seiko. Yeah, Citizen released these Zenshin, what we're now calling Zenshin. At the time they came out last year, everybody was calling them the Titanium Tsuyosas, and you still see that reference, but these are formerly the Zenshin, and I think Besides a new, besides a new movement, these are pretty similar. |
Andrew | My gosh, I'm still tangled. |
Everett | I can't remember what the reference number, it was NJ0180 series is what they came out with last year, which was very, very similar watch, except that aesthetically it had a date window at three, which I was not wild about. But other than that, these are very, very similar watches. |
Andrew | Very similar. Same 430, small seconds. The new movement is the caliber 8322 in-house movement from Citizen. With the 60-hour power reserve. 60-hour power reserve, hence the 60. A couple colors, light blue, dark blue, copper, or green. I like the green. The green's good. I like the green, don't like the rest. The dark blue I'm okay with. It's a little bit of like a sunburst fade to black. It's okay. The light blue, not a fan. Copper, really not a fan. Really not a fan. But the green's good. And for an integrated angular octagon sport watch, 500 bucks, right? This is Citizen doing the thing that they don't typically do, which is hitting the nail right on the head. Yeah, yeah. Size is right, movement's right, design is right. There's not that weird that one weird thing. You're like Why? |
Everett | Yeah Yeah, no, I I'm really glad say citizen is releasing automatic watches regularly now, I'm you know early on I think it was like episode 10 and I had observed that Citizen, despite being a prolific maker of automatic movements as a brand, had really moved away from making automatic watches. And at the time that was very, very true. And yet someone called in and bashed me and they gave me like two or three references. Uh, they didn't call them. They emailed, uh, they left it in the reviews. Um, citizen has three SKUs. You need to get unit. It was like, it was like, okay. |
Andrew | Uh, they have 10,000 SKUs. Three of them are mechanical movements. |
Everett | It does seem to me like, like that is maybe no longer the case. I do think we're seeing more of this type of stuff from citizen. And I really, I really like it. These are affordable. |
Andrew | Yeah. 500 bucks. |
Everett | They're a great size. They're 40.5 by 11.25 thick, which is in the world at five, especially at 500, 100 meters of water resistance, Andrew. This is a great, this is a banger. This is a banger. This would do very well on the objective watch scale. |
Andrew | The beveling on that, the center of these links is really good. It adds almost like a, like a hollow H-link feel to it, but it's not. |
Everett | I don't, I don't know how good these bracelets are. Citizen does good bracelets. They're titanium and Citizen generally does good bracelets. These aren't a typical Citizen bracelet. So this is integrated. It is octagonal or decagonal or. Dictagonal. Dictagonal. It's got sides, shapes, it's got a shape. Yeah, I think this is a terrific watch, especially at the price 500 bucks. The small seconds is a little weird. Maybe not my thing, but. And they're going for like a pseudo dressy vibe. Yeah, I think it's cool. I'm going to stick with say I'm going to stick with Seiko. You're just going to keep calling it Seiko. I'm going to keep calling Citizen Seiko and we're going to stick with Seiko. think for me, Andrew, the pro, the quote unquote, so citizens got pro divers, they've got a lot of things they call the pro diver. Um, yeah, if you Google it, you get about eight skews, but the, the, the watch that I always considered to be the, like sort of the epitomis ProDiver was the BN0150, either the 10E or the 28E, there's a few different iterations. It was sort of like Citizen's EcoDrive ProDiver for the masses, they come in at under 200 bucks, and it's just a really attractive, sort of no frills, citizen dive watch. It was the ISO certified citizen dive watch, like they kind of like bedrock grounded the EcoDrive ProDiver line, I thought. It was affordable. It was so they have replaced that watch. There's a successor to the BN 0 1 5 0 10 slash 28 e and it looks exactly the same But not. But not. So just quickly, reference is BN1024-01E. He's still, I still don't love, okay. Citizen's references are rough, I think. This is, like Andrew said, aesthetically, if you only look at it for a couple seconds and you're not thinking about it too hard, This is very similar to the BN0150. |
Andrew | It still has the dial that would be appropriate on a 34 millimeter watch. Three inches of bezel. |
Everett | But it could not be more different. No. It could not be. So this is, so first, we've gained a full 10 atmospheres of water resistance. We've gone from 200 to 300 meters of water resistance. Citizen has made this bigger. So rather than, I think, 42, Before, we're now, Andrew, I just had it, we're now, we're now, what are you asking? Isn't this fun? 46 millimeters. Yeah. With a thickness of 16.3, which is up from, I wanna say, 43 or 42 and like 14, 14 and a half. That sounds right enough. It's a way bigger watch. And then you say, oh, 46, is this Invicta? Is this gonna wear? but they got rid of the lugs. Yep. They just chopped them right off. The lugs are gone. This is now, this is now the baby. I'm going to say this. This is the love child of the Citizen Pro Diver BN0150 and the Ecozilla. And it looks like it's dad, but it's got its mom's hips. Um, yeah. They added a helium release valve to this iteration. It's now intended for saturation diving. And best part, they added the new 365 day power reserve movement. So you can, if you're a commercial diver, Porta Hemplow, you can stick this thing in your tote. And when you get called out to a job, it doesn't matter how long it's been. you pull it out, you stick it on, it's ready to go. That's right. If you're working with some degree of regularity, even if you go 10 months without using it, you pull it out, get it back in the sun, you're good to go. 365 days of power reserve is absurd, but you can imagine a use case scenario, which that's super reasonable. And as watch nerves, I think it's cool. With very little power demand, you get a full year. So this is ISO 6425. It's also the ISO specification for Helium Release 5, and I can't remember what that is, and it doesn't matter, because none of us need it. But it's double ISO certified. We've got sapphire instead of mineral glass now. We are 46 by 16 with with a 28 millimeter lug width, but it's an integrated bracelet or integrated strap Strap only on this guy much like the ecozilla But it's a really cool sort of hydrolysis resistant. They're calling it Beneb oil. I don't know what that means either And it's 500 bucks. Yeah, that's that's the real winner here. It's 500 bucks. This thing's cool. I don't need it But I kind of want it. I kind of want it. |
Andrew | I kind of do too, and it's only 500 bucks. |
Everett | It's 500 bucks, and it's a rad watch. The case profile on this thing is nuts. Have you seen the profile? It's sort of got a dog bowl shape. I'm telling you at home, because Andrew's seen it. It's sort of got a dog bowl shape, and it cuts in, and it's got this... I'm going to say the words and you're going to think that sounds awful, but I'm telling you it's not. It's got 300 meter professional divers on the side, engraved on the lower half of the dog bowl. And at home, you're like, Everett, that sounds. Sounds like an Invicta. That sounds terrible. It's not, though. It looks. It's got it's super fine print. Yeah, it it. Fonts are great, handsets great, markers are great, steel, oh, oh, steel bezel, steel bezel insert with, and the bezel insert is dimensional, like it slopes in above the crystal, but matching the level of the ReHot, which is printed. It's a really attractive, really cool, if you want a tool watch and you don't mind a big beefy motherfucker. |
Andrew | It kind of gives tuna vibes. It does? With no lugs on that and the thickness of that bezel and the color differentiation between the insert and the bezel, it almost looks like a shrouded case. |
Everett | It does, it does have the appearance, it's not shrouded, but I'm telling you that that is what the EcoZilla looks like. That is what the EcoZilla looks like. The EcoZilla is basically a tuna competitor. This is a really cool watch, guys. It's probably not a watch anybody listening to this show needs. There might be one guy. There might be one guy that's listening that is like, I kind of need that. For the rest of us, you buy this because it's cool and it is cool. This gets an Everett seal of approval, for sure. |
Andrew | I'm gonna stamp it, even without having handled one, because you know it's coming from Citizens, so you know that you have an idea of the quality of finish, the quality of construction. The spec sheet on it is out of this world. It's 500 bucks. And it's a year EcoDrive. EcoDrive, I stand by it, I've said it a hundred times on the show, is the absolute coolest movement technology that we have. Yeah, you have said that before. |
Everett | And I'll say it again. You want me to say it again? Right now. The finishing in this looks much, much better than it would be at 0150. If you've ever tried that watch on, you maybe, like me, was like, I don't love this. this appears to have much, much, much better finishing and fit and finish as well. I think this is cool. That's all I have to say about that. |
Andrew | I have a less cool thing. Carry on. They can't all be winners, right? Carry on. But this isn't a loser. Tudor Black Bay Chronograph, the Carbon 25, celebrating F1 partnership with Tudor. And this is, I really dig this color. It is an all black carbon case, blue red all on a white dial panda sub dials on this chronograph and you know it's a black plate chronograph right it's hard to get super excited about it because these are perfectly boring the colors on these are really i mean this looks like an f1 branded watch without being obnoxious about it like All the reshare meals I saw on the track side today, watching the race. It's like, come on, wait, I know that I know that I know reshare meals of sponsor of your team, but really, come on, let's let's chill here. Blue stitching on the black strap, just I'd say a judicious use of color. on this because it's easy to go too far too fast with color iterations in a special edition watch. And they didn't do that. Everything just pops. It's great on the crispy white dial like the blue pops without being a blue watch. It's money and they're, you know, they're $7,000 and they're limited edition. I don't, it's just less cool. |
Everett | You know, last year when Tudor released the FXD in carbon, a full carbon case. Everybody talked about, well, this is the first time Tudor or Rolex have done carbon cases. And I think that was accurate then. It seems to me like Tudor is excited about that technology. So what we get here is a follow-up, I think, in some ways to that. We're limited again, but to 2025 pieces, which I don't know how much demand is going to be. I don't know if that makes it limited, really. For these guys, it's certainly limited. In the. In a dictionary sense, there there's 7500 bucks, which. I think is like the chrono non limited edition. I mean, I actually don't know, Andrew, off the top of my head. I have a number in my head, but I don't know how much they are. But they're not carbon fiber. I do wish this had a carbon fiber bracelet. That'd be cool. I do. I think for me, even if it was 8,500 bucks or more, I think that would make it a really, really neat watch. I'm not sad. I'm not mad at them. I think that manufacturing on that would be difficult. Gosh that one wouldn't that be cool like a full like The full carbon a full carbon fiber bracelet. |
Andrew | Yeah, especially all that is actually but Especially with all the carbon used in f1 like that |
Everett | it it'd work yeah this is this is really this is a really really cool chronograph the pushers are great screw down pushers because it's a 200 meter dive chronograph made for racing uh it's a good watch crispy white dial |
Andrew | I like it mine 5 to 7000 ish for. Yeah, but Black Bay Cronos. Yeah, this isn't. This isn't much more expensive than. |
Everett | Um, here we go. I'm down to things that I'm only modestly interested in, so I'm going to pick this one hand heart a few years back, released their 417 chronograph. Very, very popular. This is a recreation of a. 19, a post-World War II, a post-World War II Air Force issue chronograph watch issued to German pilots, aviators. And when they came out with this thing a few years back, it was 42 millimeters. And everybody was like, well, that's a little too big, A. and B, it's not historically accurate. So a few years later, they came back and they released a 39 millimeter version. Then they released a white dial version, some Panda stuff. The originals were hand-wound and the re-releases were both hand-wound. They did release some, I think they released a automatic, but what they never did What they never did was they never coded the pusher in red. And that made people grumpy because historically, the World War II or post, excuse me, post-World War II versions of this watch had a red pusher, which is a aesthetically pleasing element, I think, but also is a safety device. It basically alerts the pilot not to press that reset button. So like the four o'clock. |
Andrew | Push the big red button. |
Everett | And so the 417s up to now, the re-releases have only had a red accent. Handheart is known for these red accents. The re-releases to now have only had an accent on the top of the fluted bezel. We now get a ceramic or like a ceramic combo red pusher at four o'clock. and it looks perfect. It looks perfect. We get 100 meters of water resistance in case your plane goes down. We've got a Heritage, the Hanhart 417ES. Oh, sorry, it's a Salida AMT 50-100, which is a modified Valjoux 7750, hand-wound, gorgeous movement with a see-through case back. uh these do come on a bracelet a three link and a strap like a bund strap um the three link is the more modern look it the end link at least it looks kind of mad to me i do think this wears much better on leather um but still get the bracelet it still get the bracelet they're 27.90 euro on steel or 2590 on leather. And I think these are great. They come in both 39 and 42. They are each 13.3 thick, which is fine for a chronograph. We've got reasonable lug to lugs on the 39 at 46. Less reasonable, lug-to-lug of 49.75 on the 42, that's a big watch. 100 meters water resistance, if I didn't say that, obviously we got sapphire, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Permanent collection, this is a terrific watch. |
Andrew | Yeah, I don't have a single critique. |
Everett | Oh, the other thing they did is they got rid of the Fotina. They got rid of the fotina on, so it used to be the numerals were fotinaed, but the printing was white. And so you kind of got like. We're back to, it's not a perfectly white loom application, but it's much more of like a creamy white to green, and it looks terrific. The dial on this thing looks terrific. Matte black dial. |
Andrew | Really good coin edge on that bezel too. |
Everett | Yeah, the fluted bezels on these are terrific. Anyway, that's all I have to say about that. It's good. It is good. Hanhart 417 ES heritage flyback with classic red pusher. |
Andrew | I'm for it. Certina DS1 big date. Yeah. We've talked about Certina releases before. I saw this headline, was interested. clicked on it, saw the watch, and got so confused. This is a, I mean, an unobjectionable watch. But I have so many objections. No, I got objections. I'll object. I have so many objections. |
Everett | I object. |
Andrew | So number one, it's a really attractive watch. It's markers only. It looks like it's trying to play in the realm of dress watch. 100 and but but here here's where I start to get my My problem, so this is the double security concept They have a two date analog or two window analog date window at the six o'clock and Um, and you know what? Digital. Yeah, it's a digital. Yeah, I'm I'm OK with that. That's not where my complaint is. I'm OK with it. The end link. I don't like it's a straight link on this lug. Exceptionally long lugs with the holes buried at the very ends. Yeah. So you're going to get strap gap, big strap, big strap cap. Here's where my real complaint comes in. This is aiming to be a dress watch. It's a 41mm case. And sure, I think you could probably pull off a PVD coated black dress watch. I think you could right put it on leather. I think there's you know, it's it's gonna be if it's 37 fuck Yeah, it's it's gonna be a little novel but at 41 not working for me the gold PVD coated same issue I think the gold PVD coated with the blue and the gilt markers is really really attractive But this is the same. This is Bambino. This is Sartina's version of the Bambino before they they introduced Appropriate sizing this dress watch is going to wear like and they won 900 bucks for it Yeah, it's gonna wear like a pie tin on your wrist because it's flat. There's nothing there. It's just gonna soak up Space and it's 12 millimeters thick. |
Everett | It's not a 12 millimeter. It's 41 by 12 dress watch with 100 meters of water resistance it It has had the power matic 80 and known and no loom Nothing about this release makes sense to me |
Andrew | And that's not something I've ever said about Certina. I'm usually down with what they're doing and this makes no sense. This is a watch that looks like it came out of Movado, perhaps Orient. |
Everett | Yeah, this is the watch from Orient's catalog that came out in 2007 that everybody on the face of the earth still has gray market stock on, and that you can pick up for 120 bucks on Jomash shops, 20% off sale. |
Andrew | Yeah, nothing about this watch makes sense. |
Everett | I know it's nicer than that. I know it's a nicer watch. But to me, this screams that. |
Andrew | Yeah, I'm fine with the big date. I'm not fine with the big watch. This is not a dress watch. Well, they're not saying, in fairness to them, they're not saying calling it a dress watch. It is, it has no loom, it has no numerals, it has no nothing. |
Everett | Point well made. But in fairness to them, they're not calling it a dress watch, so. Okay. Right? I mean, that's fair, right? |
Andrew | I left a treat in the tank of your toilet. I'm not calling it anything but a treat. So that is how you will accept it, as a treat. It doesn't matter what you call it, it matters what it is. And this doesn't make any sense to me. |
Everett | Have we talked about the Alpina, Alpiner Extreme on this show before? Probably, we've talked about a lot of Alpina watches. Well, so Alpina released, so the, my general feeling about the Alpiner Extreme Auto is that it's kinda like, it's kinda like, a dog without a home, right? Which is to say, I like it, I think it's cool, it's expensive, and I'm just not sure what I would do with it, right? Like, you know, where are you gonna sleep, dog? |
Andrew | Well, yeah, it has that kind of like Alpine Eagle feel of like, sure. That's not unfair, yeah. Like I don't, I am not a dress watch, I am not exactly a sport watch, nor am I not a sport watch. He is a sport watch. I'm like, I definitely am, but I don't really play well with those guys. It's a little, it's unto itself, right? You can finish it. Please do. |
Everett | That is like, like, like low viscosity molasses. Oh, it's so good. In my glass. |
Andrew | We just, we, we, we had the, the peppercorn imperial wit and now we're drinking this year's Deschutes Abyss. If, if you get Abyss, Allocations in your in your neck of the woods. So it's from just shoots brewing It's a barrel aged imperial stout if you do get it in your neck of the woods and you haven't tried it It's absolutely magical usually comes in a 22 ounce bottle They release it sometime in the winter Get a couple years a winter beer, right? especially if it's aged get a get a couple of them every year and then you can do vertical tastings of them and see how they age and It's really really good |
Everett | Uh, so, so Alpina just released the Alpina Extreme Automatic in titanium. That's, that's, I'm not going to bury the lead here. It's a 39 millimeter, under 12 millimeters thick, 200 meter watch with an excellent, excellent, excellent looking case. I mean, a weird looking case, but it looks excellent. Beautiful bracelet, beautiful finishing. And now it's in titanium, which means it's not gonna be a behemoth. |
Andrew | I think the titanium changes the entire dynamic of this watch. |
Everett | It does for me. It does for me. Yeah, I'm with you. The finishing on this thing looks excellent. It's got a triangle, sort of a stacked triangle motif on the, like a triangle grid. Is a grid with triangles still a grid? Can we say that? |
Andrew | I was going to say like a triangle honeycomb, but that's also not it. Yeah, right. Yeah. |
Everett | Uh, anyway, this, it looks just like the steel ones, right? |
Andrew | It does, but it makes sense now. It has a, it has a, it has a place. It has a stall. This is my titanium sport watch. It can be a little weird because it's made out of titanium. |
Everett | I think that there's only a white dial at this point, which is maybe a little sad, but it's 2500 bucks. Salida SW 200 or it's based off the SW 200. It's yeah, it's an in house. It's an in house sort of mod of the SW 200. |
Andrew | I'm good with everything. |
Everett | I do wish it had a nicer movement at the price, but I'm okay with it. |
Andrew | I'm good with it all. |
Everett | Yeah, I'm good with it. This is cool, man. 2,500 bucks, great size, great case, great capability. This is a watch, if you look at it and you say, I like that, I think it all checks out. Screws on the bezel. If you look at it and you're like, meh, then just move it along. But if you look at this and you're like, you get like a little tent, uh, fucking pull the trigger. This thing's rad. I always have a little tent. Yeah, that's true. Very little. Very little. Little pup tent. Andrew, we are, I think we're at a pretty good place for us to start considering, um, transitioning. Is there any other any other watches that you you really want to talk about? |
Andrew | No. |
Everett | Okay. Yeah. You know, Haven watch company did a collab with First Avenue and it looks pretty cool. It does look cool. Yeah, Messina Lab released a new watch, the Noctograph. It looks whatever. |
Andrew | With the Raoul Paget. It does look cool, very Art Deco. |
Everett | It looks fine. |
Andrew | Nevada Grenchen, F77. |
Everett | Oh yeah, the F77 has a new case and it's good. |
Andrew | The integrated link is confusing to me. |
Everett | It is to me as well. Yeah, why not just integrate the mid link? Yeah, you know, they do an end link with Yeah, who knows? Yes, I'm with you. I'm with you. That's a weird. It's a CF 77. It's a weird watch. It's a weird watch. Uh, Andrew. Andrew. Other things. |
Andrew | What do you got? I have another thing. And it is a super lame other thing. And it's something that should have been another thing of mine years ago. Um, so a couple months ago, I got a pair of Apple AirPods for my birthday. And I was kind of like, I was excited about it. Cause it's cool. Like what? Oh my God. The, I cannot believe what I had been missing up to that point with air pods. |
Everett | Yes. |
Andrew | I had the summary of the absolute convenience of like just opening the case, plugging it into my ears. I immediately go to sound like noise canceling, immediately hook up to my phone and immediately. I'm just going, like the integration of Apple products is, I've known this, right? Is next to none. And that's why we're also dependent on Apple and why everyone, like when you are in a group chat with somebody with a green bubble, you leave that group chat because they ruin it for everyone. But I'll say like, I've had, I have JBL ear pods, I've done over ear, I've had a lot of Bluetooth connected noise canceling stuff. The integration of the AirPods and the charging capability of the case, the battery life, and the sound canceling is phenomenal. Yeah, which ones did you get? Did you get the four? The four, like the new ones, right? |
Everett | Yeah, you didn't get the pros though. Not the pros. |
Andrew | Yeah. Maybe I did, hang on. |
Everett | Do they have silicone tips? No. Then you got the new AirPods, yeah. |
Andrew | They're just fantastic. If you're an Apple user, They're not they're not cheap by any means. No, no, but they're worth it But the the integration the the noise the adaptive noise cancelling It can be a little disorienting if you only have one in yeah I don't think it does adaptive noise cancelling when you only have one in It feels like it, or maybe it's just the noise canceling in one ear and not noise canceling in the other makes it disorienting. Yeah, maybe. Um, or if nothing's playing and they're just in your ears, cause that's something that I do when I want to be left alone. I put, I put earbuds in, um, and I don't play anything on them. I just want you to leave me alone. I didn't think that I'm listening to something. Uh, that's a little bit disorienting, but barring like my weird behaviors, I'm blown away by how, much I didn't realize I wanted them. And without even knowing, they meet needs that I didn't know I had. |
Everett | My first experience with AirPods, I was in New York and I was walking by myself. I had just gotten them and I plugged them in my ears and I was listening to music and then a text came in. And it told me what the text was. And I said, respond to that. And then I said what I wanted to say and I said, is this what you want to say? And I was like, yeah, send it. And then my music came back on and I was like. I had never reached into my pocket. I didn't stop walking. I wasn't distracted. I mean, I was doing something, but I was just walking. Now, here's how, if you're at home, like, just bashing on your steering wheel in your car or on your counter, you know, like, well, you can do this and blah, blah, and the audio quality and blah, blah, blah. I'm a simple guy. You're a simple guy. Very. It's like pretty cool to plug something in or in this case, plug something into your ear and just have it all work. |
Andrew | And I immediately, there's no like connect, boom, done. Everything's there. Yeah. I had to mess with the, um, the, the noise canceling settings a little bit to dial it in. But man, Yeah. I didn't realize how much I needed these. Yeah. |
Everett | I'm same way. Yeah. Uh, I won't be without him ever again. You know, will has an Apple TV at home and I understand he can hook up directly to that so he can watch shows on his television while connected to his AirPods. |
Andrew | That's money. I remember seeing Kim one time we came out at when we were recording at your house on all of, uh, listening to a TV show with earbuds in through the Roku remote. Yeah. And just being like, Oh yeah. I think I need that. |
Everett | Yeah. It is pretty cool feature. But we don't have Roku. So. And I think they got rid of that feature anyway. |
Andrew | No. |
Everett | Yeah. It was really cool though. But what, like you, it was, you got latency occasionally when you did that. |
Andrew | You get latency with streaming sometimes anyway. Uh, but I won't, I, I probably could hook up to my TV. My TV was a little old. |
Everett | Uh, Andrew, I got another thing and it's also a little lame and kind of weird. Do me. I, um, one of my sprinklers in the backyard, I did my maintenance on my sprinklers, which is really just turning them on, making sure they're all clear, kind of propping them up. You know, if they settle or they grow one direction, I have like I'll bury a wooden stake and kind of prop it up. Um, but one of the, one of the sprinklers in the backyard had just busted and it just, as soon as I turned it on, it just starts shooting a stream of water into the air, pressurized stream of water. |
Andrew | That's what they're supposed to do. |
Everett | Yeah, it did it in an undesirable way. Uh, you know, whatever the plastic, the plastic sort of piece had just in the last 10 years. The geyser instead of a directed sprinkler. Correct. Correct. And so I was like, oh no, that's gonna be a pain in the dick. But this is the other thing. |
Andrew | Pain in your dick? |
Everett | No. No. I turned them off. I went into the garage and grabbed a pair of 440s. And I came out and I put the 440s on the side of it and I really gently started to turn And then it broke free. And then I reached down with my fingers and I pulled it all the way out. And then I was holding onto a sprinkler head. I got into my car and I went to Coastal and they've got an aisle with like 30 sprinkler heads. And I held one up to it. I was like, yeah, that's the one. And I went home, and I flushed the line, and I screwed it back on, and my sprinklers work again. |
Andrew | Money. |
Everett | I don't know exactly what the other thing is. |
Andrew | I think that the other thing is... Paying somebody to do something might not be worth it. Because you can probably figure it out. |
Everett | Sometimes, yes. No, I think the other thing is specific to sprinkler heads. Paying someone to fix your sprinkler heads might not be worth it. Because if you've got a farm and ranch store down the street, they've probably got the, or I guess Home Depot probably has them too, huh? |
Andrew | Or Lowe's, or take your pick of hardware stores. |
Everett | Uh, yeah, it was, it was incredibly easy to unscrew this thing and screw a new one in. I mean, I take away the trip to the store, right? Probably a three minute job. Mm-hmm. I need to pay a couple hundred bucks for it easy. Yeah, someone's got to come out Someone's got a pet take their time to come out, right? They've got us not be working on something else. |
Andrew | And yeah, no, it was that's my other thing I do you've got a broken sprinkler head replace it I do have some I have to have someone come out because I have a leak in a line somewhere Yeah, that's that's I don't know how to do that. I don't know how I don't even know how they'd find it. |
Everett | Like, do they have to dig up my whole yard? Yeah, I mean, they might have a camera or something. But yeah, maybe, maybe. I mean, usually if you have a leak in your sprinklers, you can tell where it is. You just don't water for June. And then the spot that's green, that's where your leak is. |
Andrew | No, I know. It's a little more problematic than that. Yeah, I see. It's not in a grassy area. Oh, boo. Yeah. Boo. Well, I do want to get one of those snake cameras. I don't have a lot of, if any, uses for it. No. But I want one. You just want to put it up your butt. Obviously. Yeah. Let's see what it looks like up there. Glory holes aren't funny. Uh, no, I need it. They kind of are. They are funny. They're, they're absolutely funny. Uh, I want to get one cause of my, my gutter here in the front. It's clogged somewhere and I can't tell if like maybe a root went through it or like where it can happen, where the problem is. I want to scope it. |
Everett | Did you help me? Did you help me change that drain pipe in my backyard or was that somebody else? I don't think that was you. I don't know. I don't think I did that. Back on 33rd street. I had a concrete. Oh no, I definitely didn't. Sewage drain that broke. We weren't, we weren't that good of friends there. Yeah, that's fair. |
Andrew | Uh, Andrew, that's all I got. We've done it again, my friend. |
Everett | We always do. We always do. It's, it's sort of like what we do. We come and we do it and then we stop doing it. Until next week.
