Everett | Hello fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the watch clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, besides beer crusties, uh, how are you? Cause I have them on this too. Yeah. Yeah. No, man, I'm really good. Uh, we, we did open, we did open, uh, we did open a couple of beers just now and both of them have a little crusty under the lid, which is weird. We thought maybe they were old or not. I've never been a long neck guy. Anyway, go ahead. I've just never been a long neck guy. Cause on like you find more, there's somebody, there's somebody that's saying that, uh, and I applaud you. And a long neck never broke my heart either, but my heart's not broken. I'm just like, I'm like, Oh, it's not quite what I wanted, but I'm not certainly going to enjoy it anyway. Um, Yeah, I've never been a bottle guy. And there's people out there who are just bottle people. Rolling Rock from glass, Bush Light from glass. I disagree wholeheartedly from those people. When I think of bottled beers, those aren't the ones that pop into my head. Yeah, but when you think black porter, you're also not thinking about people who are like committed to the package. Right, they like Black Pete Porter. I'm committed to the package. Well, you are. You are. You're committed to this package. I appreciate that. But there's people who are like, oh, I want it in a bottle. I want it in a can. I want it on draft. You know what I think of? Black Pete Porter is not those types of people. There are two bottles of beer. Well, three, really, when I think of bottles of beer. I think of 99 on the wall. I think of mirror pond. Mirror pond and glass is really good. My first love. I think of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. And I think of Anchor Steam, Rest in Peace. Oh, interesting. I go right to Pliny, because that's the only- I don't think I've ever had Pliny in a bottle. Well, that's not true. I had a Pliny in a bottle in the show. In my fucking house. Yeah, it was in my house. Uh, I think a Pliny cause that's the only beer that you can almost exclusively, at least where we are, find only in bottles. Yeah, I get it on draft at beer time. Um, that's, that's where I've had almost all the Pliny I've had in my life really. It's more Pliny out of a bottle than on draft. Uh, Andrew, how are you? I am well. I'm on the tail end of single parenting. My wife is in Mexico. So I've been alone with my kids over a weekend, which is not like normal. I don't know why my dogs are barking, it's annoying. It's also a little dog barking, which is even weirder. But I've been alone over a long weekend with my kids and I'm on the tail end of that, which is, today was magical, they both went to school. Finally, leave me alone, stop asking me questions. Um, but I'm good. It's been awesome. I took, you know, the week off to, you can't really work graveyard and single parent and it's just like, yeah, it's not feasible. Um, even if you have a hasp on the outside of your door there, there's, that raises some questions. Um, so it was good. I just, we bro down, uh, my wife has Crohn's so she can't eat, really eat red meat. So we like, we went hard in the paint. I made a brisket, a rack of beef ribs and a rack of pork ribs. And that's what we've been eating for the last couple of days. Just fantastic. So my younger son, he's five. He said, daddy, I really like boy ride. Cause I like eating all the meat. |
Andrew | He's coming to five now. |
Everett | I thought he turned five in December. So we call, we call solo weekends, boy rides. Yeah. What? Oh, a new girl, they called it. There was like boy weekend and one of the guys called it boy ride. So I started calling our weekends boy rides and they both have accepted it as what you call it when mom goes away and it's just the boys. So boy ride weekend. Boy ride. Andrew, I got a new watch. Oh. And I think it's, I was trying to think what was the last, new watch i got and it was the king seiko it well i got the king seiko um i want to say that there's been a new new watch like new brand new inbox i got a new g-shock i got a new g-shock my uh what do you call the the octagonal Mm-hmm, you did get that. Yeah, yeah, the Royal whatever. Cassioke. Cassioke, that's what we call them. I got, so I've had a few, I've had a few new watches, but I got my first new like really deliberate watch purchase. I've been kind of craving a dive watch. And I was really, for a long time, I really had my eyes set on the Doxa Sub 300. Um, but I, I, uh, messed around with the buddies recently and I was just, I, I just wasn't feeling it. Honestly, the case profile, like, cause you need to go with the T the whole thing. Well, the T is even worse, dude. Yeah. The 300 T is chunkier, thicker, nastier, all 1000 meters of water resistance, helium release valve. I get in my mouth. So I don't really need all of that. And so the sub 300, I was really like, I was really headed that direction for a while. And eventually I was like, you know, I should, I ought to look at the 200T, the sub 200T because- I think you're not wrong in that. It's really interesting. They come in new at like 30, you know, basically what it used. And you can get them, you can get the sub 200s for like under a thousand new or used. But the other watch at that price range that really started to call out to me was the SPB 143. And this is a watch that came out, I wanna say in 2020, and was sort of an insta-hit. This is the sort of every man's 62 MAS re-release from Seiko. And I gotta say, I've just been super happy with it. Well, you should be, because it's fantastic. Yeah, I mean, there's something to be said for the new, latest, greatest, new, shiny, and there's a lot of that out there right now. I know Will has the SPB453, which is theoretically a successor to this watch, although these are still available. And the 453 does not come with that anthracite, that sort of gray, silver sunburst dial. It's a very dark gray. and it plays as matte black in some lights. I really like the dial on this. But really looking at the options, looking at the 453, looking at other things that were kind of out there, my mind kept coming back to this watch. I knew that skis is our local jeweler here in town. They're, they're an ad for Seiko and I was in Rolex and Rolex, but they have none Rolex because nobody has, nobody has Rolex. And, but I, I, you know, I thought one day I was, um, I'd seen it in there before and I said, you know, a little cash, maybe I'll just go in and try it on and see if it was just this petty cash from work you're carrying around. Uh, no, I mean, kind of, but yeah, I, I just put some cash aside with, with this in mind. This was the goal in mind was to buy a new watch, specifically a dive watch. And I went in and I said, you know, I wanna try that watch. And I tried on a couple other things. I tried on the new Black Bay Pro, which is dope. But I was like, I wanna try that one on. And she said, oh, this is, she pulled it out, and she said, oh, this is one of the watches on a 30% off sale. And I was like, what do you mean 30% off? And she was like, well, we're running a 30% Grand Seiko Seiko sale right now. And I was like, is that a, a Seiko sale? And she was like, no, it's an us sale. We're trying to get rid of some inventory. So I said, well, what does that bring it down to? And she pulls out a calculator. She goes, 840. And I was like, yeah, let's do it. You're coming home with me, friend. Yeah, let's do it. I'll say, though, you haven't dialed in the fit of the bracelet. Are there half links? It's got micro-adjust. I'm really happy with the fit on it right now. It is bouncing around on your wrist like you're an 80s banker. I don't want it too tight. I kinda like it a little bit loose. You've never worn a single watch that loose. I'd say this is about the same as I have everything. It's heavier. It's a pretty heavy watch head, so it does tend to move a little bit. But anyway, long story short, I'm really, really happy. So I've had it for five days now, and Andrew, I'm just really happy with this. Um, some complaints you hear about this, the bracelet, not so much the bracelet, the clasp, um, the fit on the end links to the watch, um, the movement, which whatever that I think that's, those are all psycho complaints. Yeah. That's psycho. That is a complaint universal to all psycho. I'm really happy with this, with all of it. I'm running. I'm plus 11 seconds after four days total, not plus 11 seconds per day, plus 11 seconds total after four days. I think the bracelet means you've worn it every day. Terrific and comfortable. Yeah, I haven't had it off my wrist. So the the bezel, the bezels action is terrific. The insert is terrific. Gosh, the markers in the hands, the dial, I really, really. The dive extension is ugly as sin. You know, the dive extension, I mean, it's not like, it's not practical or functional, nor does it lay well on my wrist. If I did have a complaint, it would be the clasp. If I was gonna be like, okay, here's what I'd change, I'd change the clasp. Like, no doubt about it. Yeah, the whole mechanism. I was looking, you can get by the Marine Master 300 clasps for like between 120 and 200 bucks on eBay. And they have that that adjust that quick adjust. I was looking at those. I don't know. We'll see. They're kind of clunky. I mean, but bottom line, top to bottom. That's a really good watch. You showed to me on Thursday. Hmm. It's the day you got it, right? Yeah. Yeah. It's fantastic. Sorry. You're going to hear my dogs barking in the background. There's no one down there with them. They're playing. I'm not actually sorry. They're just chilling, but you're going to have some interference tonight. Uh, I, I love that watch and in, in the way of like, Replacement for I'm kind of wanting that doxa feel that's a really close Analog, yeah, well, it's funny because it's really not like the doxa at all But it has the same kind of space in the box as it were sure. Yeah, that's I think that's right Andrew Yeah, that's kind of how I felt about definitely like I want a slightly higher quality And then, yeah, like I said, it was just like a surprise that it was 840 bucks that day instead of 1,200 or whatever it is. That's like, I'm walking away with this watch, I don't even care if I want it. You should have bought a Grand Seiko while you were at it. Well, they had a lot of really good prices. You save more money if you'd have bought a Grand Seiko. That's true, you also spend more. No, you save more. That's how that argument goes. No, I saved this many money. You know, they didn't have the new Marine Masters yet. And they wouldn't have been on sale anyway, but I did kind of, I did goof around a little bit, right? They have, they had a spring drive diver. They had the, I tried on some watches, but. You know, I've never been in there to try on watches, because I'm always really scared of what will happen. I have a pretty high limit on my credit card. Yeah, you should go in there one day. It's pretty cool. Like being able to try on the Grand Seiko's, But I've tried, they have nothing that I've not tried on before somewhere else, right? You haven't tried on a white Black Bay Pro? I have not tried on a white Black Bay Pro. Also, so we talked about that watch. |
Andrew | I did not, they've been calling it Opaline and I looked at all the pictures and I was like, it's not Opaline. |
Everett | It's frost, isn't it? It is 100%- Like an Arctic frosty? It is 100% pearl white. Oh, interesting. Like a crispy, icy pearl white. It is a phenomenal dial. And that's why I don't go in there because if I were to go in there, I would do a thing and then I would come home and be in a position where it's like, what has to get sold today? Well, what'd you call your boy again? Boy ride. Andrew, we're not here to talk about boy rides or new watches that we've bought. Rather, we're here to talk about watches, specifically new watches that we haven't bought, which is what we talk about on this show. Sometimes. And I would just love nothing more. than for you, I'm trying to go really slow so you can get your phone ready, for you to lead us off. It's all from memory today. Deep apologies. Yeah. So I want to start, I want to talk about just like just a weird kind of click baity article that I read today. Did I yesterday? I don't know. I read it recently. Well, you sent it to us. I sent it to you today. Cause I open up my tabs and like when I read things throughout the week, I'm like, Oh, I'm talking about that. I don't want to talk about that. That seems interesting when I'm talking about that. Um, so the article is on Fratello and it is entitled, Is the Cartier Santos Medium an unexpected Rolex Oyster Perpetual Killer? It's written by Henry Black. It's from about a week ago. Exactly a week ago, actually. And the big picture at the top of the article is clearly somebody swimming in a large body of water, presumably the ocean, wearing Cartier Santos. And I saw that headline and I was like, no, the answer is not. It is not an OP killer. And then I read the article. And basically this is a weird history of the Santos, which if you're not familiar, the Santos was really the first by design aviator watch. The design has remained largely unchanged since 1918? Yeah, I think that's right. Okay. The design has remained largely unchanged since then, obviously upgraded, but design aesthetics remaining true to itself. It has, objectively, the most comfortable bracelet available in the world. I'm comfortable saying that. It has a hundred meters of water resistance. It's got a North of adequate movement little light on the power reserve because it's eight eight six thick. It's just a slim Felt watch But I'm reading this article and I'm trying to find like a It basically this, you know, Henry is wearing this as a go anywhere, do anything watch comparing it to an OP or, you know, perhaps even not directly, perhaps even explore, but we're just talking to me like a Rolex sport watch and all these comparisons that he's drawing. I'm like, you know, I think maybe it's that the Santos is underappreciated or maybe like underutilized as a go anywhere, do anything watch. Cause it's just, it isn't, but it fully is. You know, Andrew, I, when you sent this article, I groaned a little bit because like, okay, hear me out. No, I'm with you. Cause I disagree and I kind of agree. My first reaction was an eye roll. And then like something along the lines of this is some fucking like, Oh, I just learned about watches beginner bullshit article. And then I read through the articles and I think I had the same basic reaction that you did, which was. you know, he's not wrong, but he's also not right. I take, I, you know, I take some umbrage to the, like, let's compare everything to a Rolex. But then I started to think about it and I was like, you know, this, this idea, so what are we doing here? We're just fucking talk. And like, I instantly like got a little annoyed with myself because this is an article written with the joy of watches that I know I know I had at one point and this like curiosity and this like I'm thinking about them and I'm I'm really like appreciating them but like comparing them and and I and I sort of then I like felt a little bad about myself because it's such a delightful article and it's I mean it's nothing groundbreaking here and it is a little like but But also like just the joy of like these two iconic watches, right? The Oyster Perpetual and the Santos are arguably, you know, top 20 iconic watches. Top 10 even. Certainly for the Santos. I don't know if I'd put the IOP top 20 or top 10, but it's up there. It's close. Anyway, long story short, like, yeah, this article is fun and the idea is fun. |
Andrew | And, and I think the bigger point is you might be considering one of these two watches and here's some thoughts. |
Everett | So, so I have a, I have a very well positioned there. This is not an article for people who are watch people. but for to remind us of the fact that there's still spectacle and diversity and it doesn't all boil down to what compares to the OP. This is the article for a person who's like, I really wanna buy a nice watch, like a really nice watch, and I can spend some money. Or a watch person. Don't just go Rolex. There's so much out there that's so well spec'd. And that was kind of where I went with it. It's like, if like me as a watch person, if I want an OP, that's cause that's what I want. Sure. You're not going to change my mind to a Santos. But if I don't know what I'm looking at and I just know the crown, right? This is an article like, Hey, this is an avenue to consider that's super different. Or maybe even a watch person that's sort of like early in their journey, right? Someone who hasn't handled and fondled and considered both of these watches. At some point, they really become different beasts. Super different. But I think when you're getting, I talk about this, well, I haven't talked about it in a long time, but I've talked about this in the past quite a bit, When I first discovered the SKX007, I was reading probably, I don't know what it was, but it was a watch forum, some sort of post. I, of course, can't go back and recreate that moment. No, because it's gone. It was something, some forum post, time zone or something, and someone had mentioned, obviously, in a post about the XKX, someone had mentioned the Orient Mako. And I remember pulling them both up, like side by siding them on my screen and like kind of struggling to figure out the differences, right? And of course, today- Could not be more different watches. Very different watches. But at that moment, you know, it was a little hard for me to like, Like kind of like backing up, getting closer. Like what are we doing here? So I think for someone who's like exploring watches, maybe not at that like extreme noob level, but who's someone who's like, wow, the Oyster Perpetual is really cool. That's a great article. Cause you're like, you know, maybe think about this. This is really fucking cool. Here's the history. Here's why it's different. I thought that, I think it's a really neat article. And it also like seeing him taking the Santos is like an adventure watch. Cause most of the pictures are underwater. I don't, I don't do shit underwater. Like if I'm underwater, it's like things have gone terribly wrong. Uh, I'm like reading this article again today and I'm wearing, what are these called? Danner wedge souls and Levi's and a scuba dude t-shirt with the Santos. And I wouldn't put my Santos on. I was like, fuck it, man. I love this watch. And some of the, like, I often don't pick this watch cause it's like, I don't like that doesn't fit. No, this fits, fits everywhere. Everything. And it's, it's the most comfortable watch I own. It just melts into you. I mean, first time I put one on, I was like, Yeah, it's great. And I still put it on and I'm like, this is better than, it's not even dollar value. It's maybe because of the dollar value. It's just objectively the most comfortable watch. It's super thin. It's razor thin. I could go for some loom. But I'm okay with not. I did today after I read the article you sent, look at full gold Santos. I'd be bored. I think if I was going to get one, that's the way I'd go. Either stainless, like for a long time I was kind of two-toned, but I think now, uh, the full golds, if you can find one for the right price. I think I'm going to get a full gold tank. Yeah, nice. That's like, I think the next kind of Grayley thing. Apparently I'm as a Cartier guy. Let's talk about some watches. Uh, let's talk about some, some new watches. Cause there, so some shit happened. Today's show is going to be a mix of like new watches that were released this week and also some like, Watches and Wonders releases that we passed by for whatever reason. So we're going to talk about a little bit of both, still some Watches and Wonders. I'm going to start with a watch that I know you're not going to talk about because... Because it sucks. |
Andrew | It doesn't suck. |
Everett | So the Panerai Luminor Marina collection, is that really where you're going? No, that's not where I was going, but we can talk about that. So the Panerai Luminor Marina is sort of like, I don't know, I'm going to call this like the Panerai flagship. This is sort of the, in my mind, this is the Panerai. We can go back to the episode and see what you declared as the Panerai flagship. And we did a flagship episode, syncing them. They're big, bold watches with that classic Panerai style. So they released a new version this year of Watches and Wonders. Still 44 millimeters across, which is big, panoramas are big, but they've reduced the thickness down from, I wanna say almost 14 to 13.4. and they've increased 200 meters of water resistance. It can be done. It went from 300 to 500 meters of water resistance, which I don't really, that's cool. They've given it a new movement. And I just, so the new P980 automatic, it's, I think this is very similar to the old movement with better finishing, because they've now equipped this thing with a see-through case back. And you would think, on a Panerai, do I need to have Sapphire case back? I want it now. And the answer, I think, is yes. It would turn out. Who saw that coming? We have a couple of interesting additions here. I typically think of blue Luminor marinas as titanium, but the blue in the new releases is um steel okay you can get it on a bracelet um but the the titanium release is green a dark sort of jade green and it and it's really terrific we got a lot of crocodile straps We have calf on the green. We've got a lovely, lovely, the titanium reference has, it's blasted and polished. And then we've got, you know, brushed and polished. The scalloping on that bracelet is just, it's like almost scaled scalloping. It's fucking gorgeous. Yeah. Yeah, the bracelet on the PAM, the 03323, this is sort of the lighter blue. It's really terrific. It's almost like a petrol blue. Sunray, really, really nice. We've also got black, white, darker blue, sandwich dials. Look, if you didn't know your Luminor, You would just, you wouldn't mind not even notice that these are new because they don't look any different. They're just, but some really notable upgrades, I think. And I thought this was an interesting release. And so I decided to talk about it. The titanium, they're all under 10 granite too. Yeah. They're well, beside until you get into, I think even titanium, well, 9,900, well, maybe, yeah. We'll talk about watch that I actually am not interested in talking about, but I saw the VAT, which was what made me want to talk about. So first up for me, not talking about articles, Bell & Ross BR05, now in 36. I'm on record and will remain on record. The BR05 is the only watch I've ever put on that holds a candle to the comfort of the Santos. And now in 36, I don't know if you can beat that. You know, I would like to try one of these on because that seems to me like it's probably a perfect size for this watch. It's going to be absolutely perfect. And I think this is thinner than your Santos, by the way, Andrew. 8.5, so just a hair thinner. So Santos is 886, Biero 5 at 8.5, so a third of a millimeter. You can basically shave the crown off, or the bezel, not the crown. Don't shave that off, you need that. You can shave the bezel off. So this is gonna be razor thin, 36 millimeters, so just a hair, hair bigger than the Santos Medium. This is maybe Perfect. I mean, the 40 was what I tried on and was like, Oh, this is, this is better than the Santos, but it's definitely a, it's definitely a big watch. Yeah. 36, but these are also for the 40 is definitely a big, definitely big watch. Uh, the 36, 4,300 bucks. Yeah. I mean, it's really, Like, I don't feel like I should be saying $4,300 as excited because it's affordable, but $4,300 for the BR05 and 36, this is one of the most comfortable, best fitting watches I've ever worn. And it comes in all the BR05 colors. And a BR05 is just baller. Yeah, I mean, it's I think this watch has amazingly, I say amazingly, because it's such a good watch. It's hard to believe that it could have grown on me. But when this first came out, I almost I want to say like, there was a bit of like, |
Andrew | I was not into it. |
Everett | I want to not like Bell and Ross too. I know. And then the more, I mean, I'm just increasingly like, yeah, this is, you put on a diamond crested one and almost bought it. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. Bell and Ross is, I think, Aside from Panerai, one of the most hateable brands. But that's just so fucking awesome. It's such a sleeper. 4300 bucks for this. That's terrific. That's a bang in value. Yeah. Yeah. So we got four new models. We have Oh, so there's a gray. There's a blue, which is probably the star of the show. It's a it's a turquoise turquoise. Yeah, like a sunburst turquoise. We've got a black and we've got sort of a crispy opal and white. The black is the one they probably have names for all of these. Who cares? Black is the one. The BR05 in black is the truth. And this is an Elodie article, so shout out Elodie. I try to select her articles when there's competition, but yeah, this is really, this is a really terrific. Yeah, you know if you're gonna complain and of course we will Salida movement here, which they call it a Br. Cal 329, but I'm pretty sure that's just a salida movement. So I'm probably yeah, and that 4300 bucks like But it's Bell and Ross Yeah, I don't think that price is crazy. I think that that's a really competitive watch, although I would like to have a little bit of a nicer. I would like to have a little. So gosh, Andrew, I have a bunch of things here and I don't think I'm going to talk about them all, but can we talk briefly about the Timex Intrepid? we probably should, because that's maybe one of the most exciting things that's happened in the last week. So JFK Jr. in the 90s was known for wearing this. The 90s were an interesting time, right? For many, many reasons. But for watches in particular, you know, quartz watches, We're basically the only watches in the 90s, you know Bill Clinton's wearing a fucking Iron Man In a suit on the campaign trail in the Oval Office then JFK jr. Is wearing this like really conspicuous big white dialed Timex, and what a terrible time in America. Even recently, I've heard people say, what is this watch that JFK Jr. |
Andrew | is wearing? |
Everett | Turns out it is the Timex Intrepid, which was, for a brief period of time, a popular watch, probably for more than anything because JFK Jr. wore it. This watch, very similar, Andrew, aesthetically, I would say very similar to my beloved. Oh my gosh, the picture that they have of him wearing it, it's so thick it goes over his jacket. Yeah, yeah. It's like actually eating his jacket. Yeah. Um, similar aesthetically to my beloved AMW 320, not an Anadigi, notably not an Anadigi, and with a slide rule as opposed to the compass bezel on my AMW 320. But other than that, a lot of similarities. Oh, you know, the way the, the mid case sort of the, the chamfer on the mid case or the lack of a chamfer. Um, and I looked at this watch and when I first saw it, I was like, oh, |
Andrew | Ugh. |
Everett | And as I've been seeing it all week, I'm just increasingly like, oh. I want some of that. Oh. I want it on me. Oh, OK. So I think the coolest thing about this watch. is this came out in 1995 when, three years after the AMW 320, by the way, I'm just gonna say that. When also wasn't famously worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger or in dozens and dozens of modern television shows. Indiglo was sort of a new thing and Timex was marketing it heavily. This watch has a incredibly conspicuous green plastic Indiglo button. at nine o'clock and it's not just a conspicuous button that does indiglo it says on it in a forward-facing fashion indiglo like in fact i bet there were people that owned this watch that said, yeah, this is my Timex Indiglo, as if that were the name of the watch. Because it says Timex Indiglo in four fucking places. It doesn't say Intrepid anywhere. |
Andrew | And so when I, at first I was like, meh. And then I'm like, increasingly, I'm like, no, this is the most fucking 90s rad watch. And I kind of love it. I was trying to sell watches earlier today, Andrew. |
Everett | Like your watches? |
Andrew | Yeah. |
Everett | To who? |
Andrew | To people. I don't know. I don't care who buys them. |
Everett | Are you like in a trench coat with a safety pin on the inside? Yes. No, but I'm trying to select watches to put on Reddit. And I'm really struggling, Andrew. I will pay you. They are all my babies. I will pay you $50 for your Speedmaster. Yeah. With the fixins. Okay, let's talk. 100 bucks for the fixins. Let's talk. |
Andrew | I'm really struggling with it, dude. |
Everett | Anyway. Why are you trying to sell watches? What are you trying to get? I want to get my Mark 20. I promised myself I won't get a Mark 20 until I sell a lot. So I got to say, I think you have a lot of shit that like nobody wants to buy though. Well, I got to buy ugly watches. I mean, I think I have like 10 watches that I could sell for like a total of 230 bucks. So is that worth it? Yeah, probably. I should probably just get rid of shit, but. Okay, anyway, moving it along. The Timex Intrepid, really cool. But there's a second part to this, which is that Timex also released a new watch. not a re-release, but rather the three new colorways for the Timex Deepwater, I guess the three new SKUs for what they're calling the Deepwater. This is a 200 meter dive watch, quartz dive watch. And it looks great. It's a Timex Seamaster. It is a Timex Seamaster, Andrew. It doesn't have twisted lugs. So I would say... No, that's why I said it's Timex Seamaster. It's like a Timex Submaster. I accept. Yes. I mean, this actually feels a lot like a Scurfa to me. Top down, we've got a very similar, this feels very Scurfa to me. We've got 200 meters of water resistance. That's a brand I haven't thought about in a long time. Screw down crown and case back, 120 click. It's big, 44 millimeters. This is all of the diving watch things. So 199 for the Intrepid. Meridian Deepwater 200, they come in at 229 to 239. I'm not sure why the pricing difference here. They come in and, oh, one of them's DLC, that's why. Yeah, 10 bucks for DLC. Just do it, just spend the extra 10 bucks. So we've got a really lovely blue on blue, we've got a black on black, and then a black on black on black. And they're really good. My only hesitation in just full-throated endorsement of the Meridian Deepwater is, that you can get a Casio. What's there? The Marlin, whatever it is, whatever it is. Yes. For 30 bucks. I think they're like 60 to 70 most of the time. But that's my that's my big reservation, right? It's like, OK, I think size wise, though, these are a little bit more appropriate for me. |
Andrew | And therefore, it's the same fucking size. |
Everett | Nope. No. Yeah, so I said, nope, they're not, like then it's not better sized. The MDV. That's 106. Yeah, 106. That's right. Saw a guy wearing one of those with a Barton the other day. Yeah, that's a random. I was like, oh, that was a choice. Like you've made decisions to get to where you are. And certainly the Timex, it looks much more modern. The chamfering looks better on the flanks. I mean, it looks like a nicer watch, tip to tail. But not by a long shot. But not by a lot. Yeah, not by a long shot at all. Yeah, so $52.45 for the MDV-106 right now. Yeah, it's the difference between like a $30 and $50 watch, except one's $60 and the other's $200. Well, it's the MDV-106, I mean, it's just such a terrific watch. The MDV, it really is. It's not to say that that's the right value for that watch, because I think it's cheaper than it ought to be. It's maybe one of the best watches under $100. Yeah, that's not to criticize. I guess that's my point. Like, I think the Timex is priced appropriately in terms of margins, but the MDV-106 is a unicorn. They made probably 20 billion of them. They probably haven't made one in 20 years. Yeah, who knows, right? Yeah. What's up next? Ooh, next up for me. Gosh, what do I talk about? I didn't even take a second to select it. I'm an asshole. There's two cholatrava links here. I wonder where that is. I'm sorry. Oh. Um, where is it? I'm sorry. I'm trying to pull up a link. Um, Oh, that. Okay. So the, what I want to talk about, Andrew, have you ever seen a baseball game, like a major league baseball game where a middle reliever will go out and the manager will just let them get plunked just like 13 runs. And that's, I felt like I was doing that to you a little bit. Justin, we've recorded 300 and some episodes of this. You should be really used to that. Uh, the Baltic scale graph tour auto 2025 limited edition. Uh, so we have a limited, really elegant name by the way. It's just, yeah, it's unusual. Um, 400 pieces of this, uh, auto racing inspired scale graph and it's, it's really lovely. Right. Um, It is celebrating the 2025 edition of the Motorized Tour de France. It has this gorgeous, delicate light blue like, I think maybe the best execution of that kind of like just a touch lighter than like periwinkle blue dial. It's maybe one of my favorite dials I've ever seen. Uh, three and nine sub dials, uh, tri-color on your three, no color on your, oh, I have to sneeze. No color on your nine o'clock. red chronograph seconds, a kind of like a ghost six o'clock sub dial for your running seconds. It's fucking gorgeous. This like feels every bit of 1960s auto sports racing to me. Did we not talk about this? We must not have, but I swear I've thought about this watch as if we were talking about it on the show. I think we may have, but what really caught my attention as I was looking at this, so these are 2,100 euros currently, right now, the 400 of them available with a 21% discount. tax. Oh, wow. So 2,100 plus 2,200. No, no, no. That includes the 21% tax. And we talked about this a week or so ago. So it's 1,700, 1,750, 1,700. Yeah. A week or so ago, Mike France gave an interview talking about how not US brands are going to eat these enormous tariffs that are hitting the US market and this was the first time that I had seen it like actually affect me and I did not super dig it. Totally, totally reasonable and to be expected that small brands like Christopher Ward, Baltic, notice are gonna be impacted by this, but this is the first time I saw a dollar sign associated with it and I got super bummed out. Yeah, I mean she might get weird. She'll get a little bit weird. Um, but this is a really gorgeous watch Baltic. |
Andrew | It's not a gorgeous watch. It's a good looking watch. |
Everett | I love it. A full half a millimeter, if not a full millimeter to stick. No fuck it. This is beautiful. This is portions are all funny. It is a little thick, but I kind of want it that way. Like this is a, This is a great color. I would just tattoo this color on me. This is my favorite blue I've ever seen on a watch dial. I think it's really clunky. I actually don't love, I don't like the case shape. No, the case shape is clunky. I think the dial is clunky. Um, it's 14, one thick 39 and a half case, double dome Sapphire. It's a manual SW five, 10 hundred. Like I'm down with this watch. Are you down with the sickness? Yeah, you can tell because I'm still on the tail end of this cold that just won't go away. My productive cough is super cool. It's Christmas colors in the morning. Yeah, I like this watch, super down with it. What shook me and why I wanted to mention it tonight was seeing a brand already reacting to VAT taxes. Yeah. Well, no, VAT taxes are, anyway, whatever, I'm not gonna talk about this. Yeah, I don't understand how it all works, right? I don't, I don't, I'm not a sorcerer. Yeah, me, I don't, so anyway. You know, don't slide into the DMs either, I don't fucking care. Or do, but we're gonna ignore them. I'll figure it out. Ever to ignore them, I've never looked So a few years ago, Andrew, we did our, I don't remember what the episode, what we called the episode, but basically we picked like each five fantasy watches. I can't remember. It was like each watches. No, it was like our five watch collection, no money, no object. It's something like that. No Holtzbard. Yeah. Right. And so we picked like just absurdly expensive watches. You did. Um, I think you did too. I was just looking at the, uh, anyway. I selected a Patek reference, which I think is the best Calatrava reference of all time, specifically the Calatrava 570. And I picked a special edition even within that. But there's something about the simplicity of the 570. So the 570 is a couple things. One, it's old, which I think is cool for a dress watch. But two, I feel like a dress watch almost should be vintage. There's something about it, right? Yeah. Like it should be grandpa's. But two, it just feels essential to me. And I mean that not in the way that it's like an essential part of your collection or whatever, but like the watch is comprised of essential components. And I remember when I was finding that watch to talk about on the show, I kind of struggled a little bit with Calatrava references, because in my mind, Calatravas are simple, like really essential dress watches, but they're not! |
Andrew | they're not all great. I like some of the hobnail bezels, I'll admit it, but yeah, any, anyway. |
Everett | So I have really, I have really decided over time for myself that there are two references, Kyle Traver references that I would consider the five 70 and the 25 26. So, so not to derail you entirely, but as a contextual understanding of the Calatrava, how much of it's related to the really interesting, like personal experience you've had with a Calatrava? |
Andrew | What do you mean by that? |
Everett | Visa be the mediator with his dead hand. Oh, well, that is a funny story, but no, none of it is that way. I know. Yeah. I mean, well actually. Cause that's a really endearing, like, Oh, the Calatrava is super interesting. That's fun. |
Andrew | Have I told that story on the show? |
Everett | Perhaps. I had a mediator, fantastic mediator that I used in Portland a handful of times, and he had, his left hand was paralyzed. I mean, I think that that's the truth of it, but he, and it was a conspicuous part of his routine. He'd use his paralyzed hand to sort of hold down his pad as he wrote. It was just, he had a routine, it was very well curated, and his paralyzed hand was part of that routine. but he wore a just gorgeous rose gold Calatrava on his wrist as he mediated. And I, that was when I fell in love with that watch. |
Andrew | So, but I don't think that's really a fact. |
Everett | There's a charming story associated with his purchasing and subsequent loss and repair. But like, I wonder if that's like kind of a part of the, Uh, like this is the thing around this watch. No, I don't think so. I just think Calatrava is like the, I mean, they're not, not the truth, right? I'm not accusing you of, of, of being wrong here. I'm just wondering if that plays any role. |
Andrew | But really just two references, the 570 and the 2025, the 2526. until until a couple weeks ago. I saw this watch pop up and I didn't look at it because I was just not, I wasn't feeling it. I wasn't interested. And then I finally pulled up an article. |
Everett | I finally pulled up an article and I was like, Oh, Oh, paddock released. Another good Calatrava. So in 100 plus years of Calatrava, we've now got three. And I'm just joking a little bit about that. There's probably five, but three are, you know, the clear winner. |
Andrew | This is an essential Calatrava. |
Everett | It is an essential platinum 47,000 salmon dialed Calatrava with anthracite finished white gold markers and hands. And I am like, I seriously, I've got to shift my pants a little to make room. I don't have to do that, but. Yeah, it's 38 millimeter rose opal and dial Did I say anthracite coated yes white gold Full platinum, I mean 38 by I think what is the thickness on this it's thin It is we've got a small seconds there a small seconds. Oh the movements two five nine three three we've got a small seconds that is a in the right place. There's been a lot written about that. And, um, small seconds belong at the six o'clock. Well, and, and in the past paddock has taken some grief for using incorrectly size or, or maybe inappropriately sized movements in their Calatrava references, which caused the small seconds to be positioned too high on the dial, blah, blah, blah. It's one of those things that it sounds petty until you see it and you're like- And you're spending 40 grand on a watch. Oh yeah, that creates this imbalance. Anyway. |
Andrew | Yeah, it's really good. We don't need to talk about it. It's 47,000. We've already talked about it way more than we should, but. |
Everett | But not enough. This is exactly the dial color that belongs on this watch. Yeah, maybe. This is perhaps the most perfect Calatrava ever released. Well, you know what's funny? Up to and including rose golds with white, like take your pick. This is, this nails it. |
Andrew | They make decisions. They made decisions and it's like, oh yeah, you nailed it. |
Everett | Because they could have easily gone like, yellow gold on the markers, that's the wrong choice on this dial. There's nothing wrong with this watch. You too, including the price point. I really would like to see one of these in person because in the pictures... Because Everett's pretty fast. That anthracite white gold, the markers, it typically plays pretty dark. I bet it's not as dark as it looks in a lot of these pictures IRL. I agree. I bet it plays with light really beautifully. That's my guess too. This is a really good watch, you guys. This isn't a 40 and 20 watch, and so we'll stop now, but it's really, really good. Essential. Expensive. Take a second mortgage. Buy three, send us two. Platinum. Really fucking good. Or buy four. Give one to the missus, and then send us two. Please. Tomorrow. So we got through like nothing. Well, do you have anything else that you need to talk about? I've never needed to talk about anything on this show as everyone who's listening knows I've just decided I don't have anything else. I need to talk about I'm deleting links right now as it happens. Okay, wait. Oh the glass box got a beater or beads of rice That's been a big bitch for you, but I deleted the link so I'm not gonna add it to the new the new Fortis fleegers with the work seven very cool The IWC ceramic top gun Lake Tahoe in full white is fucking banger and Yeah, no, that could be like him like a drunk purchase. Yeah Yeah, we haven't talked about the Moser Streamliner flyback chronograph and we're not going to we could there's a 42 millimeter 50 fathoms and steel That we're also not going to talk about PRX made a red And Cut other things and nothing will be linked. What do you got? Okay, so Guys, I maybe talked about this before I'm a man in my thirties, right? Which means that I drink whiskey and I smoke meat. That's just like happens when you're 30. You're like, man, I want to cook meat at under 300 degrees for an entire day. And I want to drink whiskey while I do it. Maybe you've independently chosen one of those things as your hobby. They are both mine. I love them. Around Christmas last year, I became introduced to a new cut of meat. And then it went away. The glory hole? That's not a cut of meat. You shouldn't be cutting that meat. What are you doing, glory holes? Don't bring, don't go to his. He's got scissors. It's not good. Uh, I, I was introduced to a rack of pork, right? Everyone knows lamb racks, but a rack of pork at Costco specifically, it's $3.99 a pound. You get about eight, 10 ribs in that. It immediately became my most favorite cut of meat ever. It's pork ribs, it's a pork loin with ribs still attached. I made some crown roasts over Christmas and then suddenly pork racks are gone. I'm like, wait, why, why are the... The fuck, pork rack? Yeah, why is the pork rack gone? I'm told Costco has them for Christmas and Easter. So I've been going to Costco once a week. Like, just walking through the meat section. This last week I went and pork racks are there, so I bought four. Friday. I smoked a rack of pork, and it is the most perfect and unfuck-uppable cut of meat you're ever gonna have, because fat-capped pork loin with ribs attached. So it is tons and tons of fat with really forgiving meat. All you have to do is set it at 225 and leave it for five hours and it's gonna be amazing. You don't even have to season it. So I did season it. I gave it about a 15 hour dry brine and then threw it on the smoker. I gave it five hours, pulled it off. |
Andrew | What's a, sorry, what's a dry brine? |
Everett | It's a salt brine, like seasoning brine. Let salt soak some of the moisture out and soak in and tenderize the meat. Yeah, so I, all I did was dry rub it. Like I, so I did a primarily salt and pepper mix and ow. You always do that. And that's why we don't drink glass here. And I used a rub, it's called, oh shit, I got it at the Walmart. It's like beefy something. It's like one of the big brands of like dry rub mixes. Lowry's or something. No, it's not Lowry's. It's like not quite that big, but you know, it's a Walmart, right? So it's. Big and beefy I think is what it's called. It's fantastic. It's like really heavy on the onion and really heavy on the garlic. A little bit sweet. Salt and pepper coated. Hit it with that. Threw it on the smoke for five hours at 225. Pulled it out and it's amazing. It's so tender. It's so juicy. This is a, this is a cut of meat that's like worth going to Costco just to put five in your freezer. So you have them until next year. Cause they're not going to be back at Costco until December. You can probably get them from a butcher. Totally accept that. But they're not going to be $3.99 a pound. They're so good. So I gave you a slice and I, I wanted to give you more, but cold. It just, like you lose a lot of the feel. So I gave you like a deli meat thin slice. You get to be the judge. Yeah. Fantastic. I mean, any meat you smoke is going to, have like a ton of complexity of flavors, and this is no different, but the meat was really tight. The first thing I said to you, I was like, even cold, it's super tender. I bet it falls apart when it's warm. I don't know, I think smoked, you could pull it off, but what jumped into my head was Thousand Island, sauerkraut, and rye bread. Yeah, no, it should be a Reuben. It should be a Reuben. What do they call pork Reubens? I don't know. There's a name for them. The Anti-Semite? Maybe. There's a name for the turkey Reuben. What's that one? I just laugh at my own joke. My own borderline racist joke. Nah, it's not. Turkey Reuben name. You said pork Reuben. It's a Rachel if it's turkey. Pork Reuben name. Kulakowski. Oh, no, that's what a Reuben sandwich is named. It's named after Reuben Kulakowski. What's a pork Reuben called? |
Andrew | It's the same pork loin Reuben. |
Everett | There's not a name for it. I think I'm honestly. Gobels seems appropriate because it's not it's not fully there, but it's maybe the Himmler No, it was really really good. And I think that we should I think that we should have it again soon. Yeah, so my other thing I'll send you home with one of them You don't have an immersion circulator, but I don't have an immersion cooker nor do I have a smoker? So you probably know I was gonna slice you one of the ribs. Oh, I see I Yeah, it's, it is my absolute favorite kind of meat. I haven't done one in the oven yet, but also like meat bone in looks super elegant for some reason, even though it's like objectively not, it requires more on the plate managing. Uh, but it's this, it's this really lovely presentation of this super Joe juicy, juicy chop with a rib hanging off of it. Um, Go to Costco, get a rack of pork, smoke it if you got a smoker, or put it in the oven. And that's my other thing, is a rack of pork. Who knew? Yeah, delicious. I didn't lollipop these. I usually lollipop them, but I was being lazy. |
Andrew | Don't eat, right? You're making it for a five-year-old and an eight-year-old. |
Everett | And for me, um, 10, nine, but whatever. He's not, they get older every year. It feels like they just keep, yeah, they keep doing that. And the assholes, uh, Andrew, I got another thing. Do me. I, do you ever use like, uh, use Apple music? Is that right? Spotify. Spotify, okay. Why use Apple Music? And I'm sure Spotify has a similar thing, but Apple Music over time creates a playlist for you. Well, they do it immediately, but I think it gets better over time. It sort of seasons. Um, and so I, oftentimes when I just don't feel like I'm not doing an audio book, I'm not really feeling any podcasts. I'll just, and I'm not feeling any specific music. I will just put on my four Everett station on Apple music. And typically what happens is I will either encounter a song that I know very well. And I'm like, yeah, actually I could, I could listen to a little bit of you know, gift to gab right now or whatever. And then I'll, I'll, I'll pull that artist up and listen to some music by them or, or what will happen is I'll hear something I've never heard before. And I'm like, Ooh, what is this? And so I've actually discovered quite a bit of music that way. Um, And that happened recently. That happened this last week. I had on my station and this song came on and it sounded as if, uh, it sounded as if Julian Casablanca's was singing over the top of the flaming lips in Spanish. Okay. And I was like, Okay. You have my attention. So the band is called Little Jesus, or perhaps Little Jesus. Probably Little Jesus. I haven't decided which yet. I'm fine with Little Jesus. And in fact, I might lean in that direction. And you don't hablo, so maybe it is Little Jesus. |
Andrew | Well, it's not poquito. |
Everett | poco it's little which makes me think anyway uh we're gonna go with little jesus so little jesus the the song i heard was called norte and the song is a single off of their album norte which i think |
Andrew | is a 2014 album. |
Everett | Oh geez. This is almost deep cut at this point. A decade old. Um, I was unfamiliar. I'm not like the most like, music savvy guy. I like what I like. So I started listening to this album and it has been like on constant blast in my car. And my nephew, my nephew who lives with us, we were driving around today and he was like, He was like, I really like this music. It's super chill, but like also fun. And I feel like he's singing about something important, even though he's probably not. And I was like, Lucius, that's deep. That is exactly right, and I could have never said it that way. Yeah, really, really good. So that's my other thing for the week, is the album Norte by Lil Jeebus, aka Lil Jesus, aka Lil Jesus. There's probably an answer to that question. I can't be bothered to find it. Nor do we all know enough. That's my other thing, Lil Jesus, Norte. Terrific album. really, really, really good. And- The lyrics are all in Spanish. I have no clue what any of the songs are about. Norte is still my favorite. You know what though? That's the sound of good music. It transcends language. Yeah. Yeah. And like Lucia said, I imagine he's thinking about something really important. And it's important enough to listen to. Andrew, anything else you want to add before we go? No, man, I'm out of things.
